Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 5.5/10 for firmness. While TEMPUR-Cloud is marketed as having a medium feel, this rating places TEMPUR-Cloud at the lowest end of the medium-firm category. Despite being more firm, it has a good amount of “hug” in the top layer, which may make it difficult to change positions.

The Douglas Original is designed to be medium-firm, with a firmness score of 6.7/10. This balance makes it suitable for all sleep styles and preferred by many Canadians. The Douglas provides gentle contouring around your body with minimal sinking, offering a slightly firmer feel and less “hug.”

Edge Support

Foam mattresses often have low edge support. However, both Douglas and Tempur-Pedic scored well for edge support in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). Douglas scored 7.8/10, and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 8.5/10. You can safely sit at the side or foot of either mattress without tumbling off. It should also be easy to get out of bed in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Foam mattresses usually offer better motion isolation than innerspring and hybrid mattresses. This means you should notice less movement from other areas of the mattress while you’re sleeping. Douglas scored very well for motion isolation with a 8.3/10, so you can expect a restful, undisturbed sleep.

Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, scored 4.6/10 for motion isolation. This is considerably lower than Douglas’s score—and lower than we would expect to see in a foam mattress, period. If you or your partner are a restless sleeper, Douglas is a better option for a good night’s rest.

Bounce

Both Douglas and Tempur-Pedic have a low level of bounce, which is common for foam mattresses. Douglas scored 3.1/10 while Tempur-Pedic scored 3.6/10. These scores are very similar, so you might not notice a difference in bounce level. However, if you’d like as little bounce as possible, Douglas would be a better fit for your bedroom.

Douglas Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
  • Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
  • Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer is roughly 2″ of TEMPUR® foam. This layer is described as soft and supportive. Unfortunately, the TEMPUR-Cloud website doesn’t share the exact thickness of this layer or its foam density.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is around 2″ of TEMPUR® foam. The TEMPUR-Cloud website describes this as a firmer support layer that slowly adapts and conforms to your body for pressure-point relief. Similar to the comfort layer, the exact measurements and foam density of this layer aren’t available.
  • Layer 3: The support layer contains about 6″ of premium foam. This layer helps the mattress stay structured and supportive.

Tempur-Pedic doesn’t publicly share its layer measurements or foam densities. Douglas is more open with this information. The Douglas website states that foam density is 2.5 lbs/ft³.

The sustainable Infinitex™ fibres in Douglas’s cover keep your sleep surface cool and dry. You can remove and machine-wash Douglas’s top cover to keep it fresh using the 360° zipper.

Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, has a polyester-and-spandex cover that isn’t removable or machine washable. This could be partly because TEMPUR-Cloud contains 23% “glass fiber” (fiberglass) in its internal fire sock netting. (We safely removed the cover for the purposes of this comparison but don’t recommend doing the same at home.) Instead of removing the cover, spot-clean the mattress carefully when it gets dirty.

Pick the mattress with a machine-washable top cover.

Free pickup and return, full refund

Tempur-Pedic and Douglas ship by ground using FedEx. Shipping is free across most of Canada, but you may need to pay an additional fee for delivery to remote locations. Douglas ships in 3–10 business days, and Tempur-Pedic should arrive in 5–7 business days.

Douglas arrives at your door in a recyclable cardboard box and is protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Tempur-Pedic is delivered in a bag, which isn’t reusable once you remove the mattress.

Warranty and returns are very different for Douglas vs Tempur-Pedic. Douglas comes with a 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty, which are among the best in the industry. You can return your mattress at any time after 21 nights and receive a full refund with free mattress pickup.

Tempur-Pedic only offers a 90-night trial and 10-year warranty. You can return the mattress after sleeping on it for 30 nights, but a return shipping fee will be taken from your refund. If you buy TEMPUR-Cloud through an online retailer, return and warranty policies may be different from what Tempur-Pedic offers.
