Both GhostBed Classic and Douglas Original are 3-layer combination foam mattresses that contain cooling gel foam and come with a 20-year warranty. Beyond that, there’s no comparison between the two—Douglas is the clear winner.

Available at just $799 for a queen size, only Douglas Original features superior motion isolation and a 365-night sleep trial—all for a third of the price of GhostBed Classic. GhostBed doesn’t just fall short in value. Negative customer reviews on Consumer Affairs, Trustpilot, and the Better Business Bureau complain of problems getting GhostBed to honour returns and warranty claims. GhostBed also has an outstanding consumer alert from the BBB for questions about misleading advertising claims, including its advertised sale price. In addition, the company requires you to pay back any discounts before issuing returns. This is concerning because GhostBed’s “original” prices can be thousands of dollars more than the sale price.

In comparison, Douglas has an excellent reputation for product quality and customer care. The company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on BBB. Firmness

GhostBed Classic is advertised as a medium-firm mattress, but it has a fair amount of “hug.” You could find yourself sinking into the mattress more than you’d like, and you may find it difficult to move. This may not be ideal if you like to sleep in more than one position.

Douglas is also a medium-firm mattress, only without the sinking feeling you’ll notice with GhostBed. Douglas gently contours around your body with minimal sinking, so it’s easy to change positions while you sleep.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t typically known for having high edge support. But both Douglas and GhostBed exceed expectations here. Douglas scored 7.8/10 for edge support, and GhostBed scored 9.0/10. With scores this high, you’ll be able to sit comfortably on the edge of either mattress, and you should have no difficulty getting up in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets when they decide to join you in bed. Douglas has an exceptionally high motion isolation score of 8.3/10. You can expect to sleep soundly and not notice any movements from the other side of the mattress.

GhostBed, on the other hand, has a lower motion isolation score of 7.2/10. It’s a good score, and you likely wouldn’t notice much movement with this mattress. Still, if you’re looking for exceptional motion isolation for the most undisturbed sleep, you should look at Douglas instead.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Low bounce is a good thing if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken, while higher bounce is ideal if you have trouble changing sleep positions. Both GhostBed and Douglas scored below average for bounce—typical for all-foam mattresses. Douglas scored 3.2/10, while GhostBed scored a touch lower at 3.1/10.

GhostBed also has more “sink” than Douglas. These two mattresses may have scored nearly the same for bounce, but you may need extra help changing positions when sleeping on GhostBed—a problem that’s less likely with Douglas.

Both Douglas and GhostBed are combination foam mattresses with 3 layers, including a layer of cooling gel foam.

Douglas Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
• Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
• Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

GhostBed Mattress Layers

• Layer 1: GhostBed Classic has a 1.5″ layer of aerated latex. This aeration helps keep your body cool while the responsive latex material adds bounce.
• Layer 2: The mattress’s second comfort layer is 2″ of gel memory foam. This layer offers a mixture of cooling and contouring.
• Layer 3: GhostBed Classic’s support layer is 7.5″ of high-density foam. This layer is responsible for the durability of the mattress.

When it comes to mattress composition, GhostBed doesn’t provide any information about its foam densities. Douglas is open about its mattress construction and foam densities of 2.5 lb/ft³.

Douglas’s cover design pays tribute to the brand’s Canadian roots with its red-and-white colour profile and mountainscape stitching. Made with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres, the stretch knit fabric is soft, breathable, and durable to help you sleep cool all night long. The top cover is removable and machine-washable.

GhostBed’s top cover is white, with raised circular stitching for added texture. The fabric is a soft, breathable blend of viscose and polyester. However, it’s important to note the cover is not machine-washable and can’t be removed. GhostBed recommends spot cleaning only.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Both Douglas and GhostBed ship by ground using FedEx. Your mattress is delivered directly to your door throughout most parts of Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. Douglas ships from Ontario or Alberta in 3–10 business days, while GhostBed ships from Ontario or Quebec in 2–5 business days.

Douglas’s sleep trial is significantly longer at 365 nights, compared to GhostBed’s 101-night trial. Douglas gives you much more time to try your mattress at home. If you choose to return your mattress for a full refund, Douglas will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period, then donate your mattress to a local charity in your area. Just contact customer service to coordinate your return.

In addition to a shorter sleep trial, GhostBed has a far less straightforward return policy than Douglas, according to customer complaints. GhostBed has a “Bad” Trustpilot rating with numerous concerns about dishonoured sleep trial returns. Post on the r/Mattress subreddit express similar opinions. If you return your mattress during the sleep trial, GhostBed also requires you to pay back any discounts before issuing returns. Since GhostBed mattresses are often (if not always) “discounted,” this policy will likely apply to you.

Douglas and GhostBed both provide a 20-year mattress warranty. However, numerous reviews on GhostBed’s Better Business Bureau page complain of difficulties getting the company to honour warranty claims. This may be due in part to the restrictive warranty terms. For example, GhostBed’s non-removable mattress cover is only warrantied for one year, and any physical damage (including soiling) will void the entire warranty.
