Shopping for a hybrid mattress in Canada? You’ve probably heard of the Casper and Douglas brands.
Casper Atlas and Douglas Hybrid are both 4-layer hybrid mattresses with removable, machine-washable covers. But when compared head-to-head, Douglas earns higher scores for motion isolation and edge support, incorporates more cooling features, and offers a longer sleep trial and warranty, all for the lower price of $949, compared to $1,199 for Casper Atlas.
Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

While mattress firmness is a matter of preference, medium-firm mattresses are often considered a versatile option for a wide range of sleepers. This is because medium-firm mattresses offer a good balance of cushioning and support to work for back, side, and stomach sleepers alike.
In the firmness test executed by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), both Douglas Original Hybrid and Casper Atlas Hybrid received medium-firm scores. Douglas received a 6.0/10 for firmness, and Casper was slightly firmer at 6.5/10. Either mattress should work for most sleepers.

Edge support in a mattress is important because it determines the amount of usable surface area. A mattress with good edge support can be especially helpful when sharing a bed with a partner. Perimeter support also makes it easier to sit on the edge of the bed without feeling like you are sliding off it.
Hybrids tend to perform well for edge support, and both Douglas and Casper were no exception. Casper Atlas earned a very good edge support score of 7.8/10. That said, Douglas Original Hybrid performed even better, earning a higher 8.3/10 edge support score. For support toward the edges of your bed, you may prefer the Douglas Hybrid mattress.
If you share your bed with a partner or pet, you’ve likely been woken up by their movements at night. Modern mattresses made with quality foams that absorb motion can help to reduce these disturbances.
The Douglas Original Hybrid mattress proved as a strong contender in this field with an outstanding 9.0/10 motion isolation score. This means you shouldn’t feel most movement from across your mattress. Atlas Hybrid also earned an excellent 8.0/10 score for motion isolation, but it still wasn’t as high as Douglas.
Mattresses can be more or less responsive: it depends on their bounce level. Hybrid mattresses tend to have a higher level of bounce thanks to their coil layers. Both Casper and Douglas had above-average bounce scores, with Casper at 1.8/10, and Douglas at 5.3/10. A higher level of bounce can make it easier to shift sleep positions throughout the night.
To keep temperatures comfortable throughout the night, Casper Atlas features a breathable knit cover, and a layer of coils that allow for better mattress airflow. These features earned Atlas a 1.8/10 cooling features score.
In comparison, Douglas Original Hybrid earned a higher cooling feature score of 5.3/10. This score was calculated because of the mattress’s cooling gel-foam layer, open-cell foam, layer of breathable coils, and cooling mattress cover with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres.

Like all Douglas mattresses, the Original Hybrid features a cover made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that wick moisture to keep you cool and dry through the night. The cover, which features a 360° zipper for easy removal, is machine-washable, making keeping your mattress fresh a breeze.
The Casper Atlas Hybrid mattress cover is made of a combination of polyester, polypropylene, and a small amount of spandex. According to Casper, it has a breathable knit that allows for better airflow and can be removed for machine washing.

Your mattress comes with a sleep trial that lets you try it in the comfort of your own home. With Casper, you’ll get 100 nights to see if it’s the right fit. Douglas, on the other hand, offers one of the longest sleep trials in Canada at a full 365 nights—more than 3 times as long as Casper.
If you choose to return your Douglas or Casper mattress during your sleep trial window, either company will arrange a free pickup and issue you a full refund, as well as donate the mattress to a local charity.
However, if you keep your mattress, you’ll have coverage for any manufacturing defects or other issues under your warranty. The Casper Atlas Hybrid mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty, which is standard for the industry. Douglas offers a longer warranty of 20 years.
