Which Is Better: Dormeo or Douglas?

Dormeo and Douglas are both foam mattress brands that are popular with Canadian shoppers. While Dormeo is known for its innovative Octaspring technology, its mattresses are priced higher than average compared to other mattresses we’ve tested with similar features.

Douglas, on the other hand, comes with more cooling features, excellent motion isolation, a longer 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle, all at a much lower price of $1,299 for a queen size. So when you’re comparing Dormeo vs Douglas, Douglas is the clear winner.

Firmness

At the time we purchased the Dormeo One mattress, it came in a medium and a firm version. We purchased the medium mattress for this review.  However, in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Dormeo scored 6.5/10 for firmness. This places the mattress in the medium-firm category, which is firmer than advertised.

The current version of the Dormeo One mattress comes in a single firmness option that’s advertised as having a firm feel.

In comparison, Douglas Summit scored 6.7/10, also putting this mattress in the medium-firm category. A medium-firm feel is thought to be well-suited for most Canadians, including side, back, and stomach sleepers.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t typically known for having great edge support. However, both Douglas and Dormeo have higher-than-average edge support scores.

Douglas Summit earned a very good score of 7.5/10. Dormeo One also performed well when tested for edge support, with an outstanding score of 9.3/10. You’ll feel comfortable sitting on the edge of either mattress, with no worries about falling off the edge.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is essential for a restful night’s sleep, especially if you share your bed with a partner, kids, or pets. Dormeo One performed well for motion isolation with a very good score of 7.2/10.

However, if you’re looking for a mattress with an even greater ability to stop motion transfer, you may prefer Douglas Summit. Douglas Summit earned an excellent motion isolation score of 8.8/10.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. A higher level of bounce can make it easier to switch positions, while a lower level of bounce pairs well with motion isolation to deliver undisturbed sleep.

Dormeo One scored 5.5/10 for bounce, which is above average for a foam mattress, likely due to its Octaspring technology.

Douglas Summit, on the other hand, has a below-average bounce score of 3.0/10. Douglas’s low bounce is good news if you’re a light sleeper or someone who’s easily woken by your partner’s movements. No need to worry about changing positions, either—the transition layer of Elastex® foam is springy and responsive, making it easy to move as needed.

Cooling Features

Douglas Summit and Dormeo One both offer cooling features to help sleepers stay comfortable throughout the night. Dormeo One earned a cooling features score of 3.7/10. This score is due to the mattress’s TENCEL™ cover, phase-change material to help dissipate heat, and Octaspring technology to promote air circulation.

In comparison, Douglas Summit earned a higher cooling feature score of 5.4/10. This is due to its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover woven with cooling nanofibres, a layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam enhanced with phase-change material, and a layer of breathable Elastex® foam. With Douglas, you get more cooling features—all for a third of the price of Dormeo One.

Douglas Summit Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer features 2.5″ ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which is lighter and more durable than traditional memory foam. It effectively dissipates heat and improves air circulation. This layer is enhanced by Polar® Temperature Balancing, a phase-change material that regulates mattress temperature.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 2.5″ of Elastex® foam. This latex-free open-cell foam offers both springiness and support, similar to the way many mattresses use latex.
  • Layer 3: The support layer, which makes up half of the mattress’s overall height, is 7″ of motion-isolation foam. Designed to provide exceptional motion isolation support, it significantly reduces any transfer of movement from the other side of the bed.

The Douglas Summit CoolSense® cover is made from high-density polyethylene, polyester, and spandex. For added convenience, the Douglas mattress cover is removable and machine-washable.

It also features sustainable Infinitex™ fibers and CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres, which efficiently wick away moisture from the mattress’s surface. Combined with the cooling gel foam in the top layer, the cover fabric will help keep you cool and dry all night.

Dormeo One Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 1″ of Dormeo’s recovery foam, a type of polyurethane memory foam that contours to the shape of your body as you lie on the mattress.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 3″ thick. It consists of 2″ Octasprings sandwiched between 0.5″ foam sheets. These “springs” are designed to move in three dimensions to conform to your body and provide pressure-point relief.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 7″ of dense polyurethane support foam. This foundation maintains the mattress’s structure and support, ensuring you won’t sink too far into the upper layers.

Dormeo One’s hypoallergenic mattress cover is made of polyester, viscose (rayon), and spandex. While polyester and spandex are durable fabrics, they aren’t known for having cooling properties.

According to the Sleep Country website, the Dormeo One mattress cover contains phase-change material and TENCEL™. Although the Dormeo cover has a zipper, it’s not machine washable, and Dormeo recommends against removing it.

Dormeo One is available exclusively through Sleep Country Canada, where we ordered from. Sleep Country offers free shipping for orders over $75 to most Canadian locations, although a surcharge will apply for some remote locations. The mattress should arrive at your doorstep within 3–10 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. It will come fully expanded and wrapped in a sheet of heavy-duty plastic.

Warranty and returns are very different for Douglas vs Dormeo. Douglas comes with a 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty. You can return your mattress anytime after 21 nights and receive a full refund with free mattress pickup.

Dormeo, on the other hand, only offers a 100-day exchange period and a 10-year warranty, with a separate 1-year warranty for Dormeo One’s mattress cover. Sleep Country doesn’t provide refunds for mattress returns, just in-store credit. If you decide to return Dormeo during your trial period, you’ll pay a $65 exchange fee to cover the costs of switching mattresses, and you’ll need to pay the difference if you choose a more expensive mattress. Sleep Country also doesn’t offer mattress pickup, so you must return the mattress to the store yourself.
