Firmness

Douglas Original is a medium-firm mattress that contours around your body for excellent pressure-point relief. It also has minimal sinkage so you can change sleeping positions more easily, while still adding a touch of softness to your sleep experience. This makes Douglas ideal for stomach, side, and back sleepers.

Silk & Snow, however, has a medium feel. This means it feels softer than Douglas Original. It also has more “sink,” meaning your body will settle deeper into the mattress. You could find it difficult to change positions, and Silk & Snow may not provide as much support as your body needs.

If you sleep with a partner, have a heavier body, or are living with back pain, consider Douglas instead.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t known for edge support, but Douglas Original stands out with exceptional edge support, thanks to the all-around sidewalls. With an impressive edge support rating of 7.8/10, Douglas lets you comfortably sit on the bed’s edge without any fear of sinking or slipping off.

Silk & Snow can’t say the same, with an edge support score of just 5.2/10. If you have mobility issues, sleep with a partner, or like to sit on the edge of the bed, consider a mattress with better edge support like Douglas.

Motion Isolation

If you’re looking for a foam mattress with exceptional motion isolation, your search is over. Douglas Original is the best choice with a remarkable motion isolation score of 8.3/10. This means you can enjoy a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets when they decide to join you in bed.

Silk & Snow still has above-average motion isolation at 7.6/10. This score is comparable with most other foam mattresses. However, if you value a good night’s sleep, you’ll want a mattress with the highest motion isolation possible—like Douglas—to help keep nighttime interruptions to a minimum.

Bounce

A lower level of bounce is ideal if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken. Douglas Original has a below-average bounce rating of 3.2/10, which is a nice side effect of its excellent motion isolation. You should still be able to change positions easily, but without disturbing your partner.

Silk & Snow has a lower bounce rating at 2.9/10. At first glance, this might seem ideal if your partner is a restless sleeper. However, this mattress has a higher level of sinkage that could make it harder to shift sleeping positions. It could also be more difficult to get out of bed—especially if you or your partner have limited mobility.

Douglas Original and Silk & Snow are both combination foam mattresses. Each mattress has 3 layers, including a layer of cooling gel foam.

Douglas Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The 2″ top layer of the Douglas mattress is made of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. It’s just as durable, comfortable, and body-contouring as memory foam, minus the late-night heat. It’s also more eco-conscious.
  • Layer 2: The 2″ middle layer is made of Elastex® foam for extra spring and support. This foam is latex-free, making it a good option if you’re sensitive to latex.
  • Layer 3: The 6″ bottom layer is made of motion isolation support foam. This means you’ll hardly feel a thing from the other side of the bed, even if your partner is tossing and turning all night long.

Silk & Snow Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer features 2″ of high-density gel memory foam. This top layer helps relieve pressure points while letting you sink into the mattress. Foam density: 4 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 2″ of transition foam. This layer serves double duty by reinforcing the mattress’s motion-isolating qualities while being an extra buffer for the support layer below. Foam density: 1.8 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 3: The support layer is made from 6″ of premium support foam. This bottom layer makes up the mattress’s foundation, providing the overall integrity of the bed and keeping you from sinking too deep into the lower layers of the mattress. Foam density: 1.8 lb/ft³.

Douglas Original has a machine-washable top cover made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit, soft, and extremely durable. It also stays cool and breathable through the night so you won’t wake up in a pool of sweat. Silk & Snow also has a machine-washable top cover, but it’s made with polyester and cotton.

In comparing the Douglas mattress vs Silk and Snow, both mattresses have similar delivery methods. They both ship by ground using FedEx, although Silk & Snow also uses other courier services like UPS. Your mattress is delivered directly to your door throughout most parts of Canada. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations.

Douglas ships from Ontario or Alberta with a shipping time of 3–10 business days. Silk & Snow says its products are manufactured in the Toronto area, but it’s not clear where they ship from. Shipping times vary from 2–4 business days in central Canada, to up to six business days elsewhere in Canada, and up to nine days in the Territories.

Both mattresses are shipped in cardboard boxes and protected by layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, the mattresses fully expand within a few minutes. Both Douglas and Silk & Snow are sleep-ready on delivery day.

If you choose to return your mattress for a full refund, Douglas will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period. Just contact the customer service team to coordinate your return. Douglas will donate your returned mattress to a local charity in your area, or recycle the mattress if donation isn’t possible.

Silk & Snow has more restrictive terms and conditions. You need to provide three business days where you will be available for return pickup, within two weeks of initiating the return. You must be available on the pickup date to qualify for a full refund. Silk & Snow also has poor BBB and Trustpilot reviews about customers not receiving a full refund. (Douglas, on the other hand, is rated “A+” on BBB and “A+” on Trustpilot.)

Douglas also wins on sleep trial and warranty length. Douglas has a 365-night sleep trial—one of the longest in Canada. Silk & Snow’s sleep trial is just 100 nights. Silk & Snow does have a competitive 15-year warranty, but Douglas offers an even better 20-year warranty.
