Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

Product Details
Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is 18″ tall and has 7 layers, not counting the pillow-top cover or the tufting located directly underneath it. This Simmons Beautyrest Black mattress includes supportive zoned coils and cooling features like a gel foam layer, phase-change material, and cooling fabrics.
This mattress has above-average motion isolation and a fair amount of bounce, according to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). However, it scored poorly for edge support, especially for a hybrid mattress.
The mattress has a price range of $3,629–$4,199 and is available from twin XL to king size. It comes with features that may explain its much higher price point, such as a diamond infusion in one of its foam layers. That said, you can find mattresses with similar benefits that are lower-priced like the Logan & Cove Pinnacle.
Beautyrest is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot, and it’s parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, is rated “F” (unaccredited) on BBB with a customer review score of 1.77/5 stars. In comparison, Logan & Cove’s parent company, GoodMorning.com, is rated “A+” on BBB. Logan & Cove has an “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Note: As of May 2025, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is no longer available for purchase on The Brick’s website. The mattress may still be available through individual resellers and some of The Brick’s retail stores. The following information is based on our experience at the time of purchase.
The Brick doesn’t include delivery in Beautyrest Black’s purchase price. According to their website, The Brick estimates a delivery fee of $89.95, but it depends on your location. They also don’t offer an estimate on how long it will take to deliver your mattress once purchased. However, you might be able to receive an estimated delivery date to a specific location by chatting with a customer support agent from The Brick. You are able to order a mattress for pick-up (for free) at a store near you if you wish.
The mattress is delivered to your home wrapped in plastic and fully expanded. Beautyrest Black’s height and weight are on the higher end, even for a hybrid mattress. Given its size and weight, you may find it very difficult to move and may need assistance when transporting it to your bedroom. The mattress we ordered arrived with several holes in the plastic layer.
You’ll have a 90-night sleep trial to test out Beautyrest Black. That’s slightly shorter than the industry standard of 100 nights. If you’re unsatisfied with your mattress and want to return or exchange it, The Brick will charge you to ship the mattress back to the store. The Brick also doesn’t offer refunds—you can only get store credit to put toward a different mattress.
The mattress comes with a 10-year warranty covering manufacturing defects.
In comparison, competing hybrid mattresses like Logan & Cove Pinnacle come with a longer 15-year warranty, a generous 365-night sleep trial, free delivery to most locations in Canada, and free return pickup and a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with your purchase.
Take a full 365 nights to get to know Logan & Cove Pinnacle.

Beautyrest Mattress Construction
Beautyrest Black is a hybrid mattress with 7 distinct layers. It stands 18″ high, and a queen size weighs 183 lb.
- Layer 1: The top layer consists of 1″ HI-LUX gel memory foam. This foam’s design is meant to reduce pressure on your hips and shoulders. The gel infusion may help offset the heat-trapping properties of memory foam.
- Layer 2: The second layer is another 1″ of memory foam. It’s not clear whether this layer is infused with gel foam since The Brick doesn’t provide detailed descriptions for individual mattress layers.
- Layer 3: This 3″ foam layer could be made up of memory foam, based on the look and feel.
- Layer 4: A second 3″ layer of foam makes up the fourth layer of the mattress. It looks and feels similar to the layer above.
- Layer 5: A 1″ layer of grey foam forms the transition layer between the upper foam layers and the steel coils below. We believe this to be a layer of gel-based BlackLux foam, which is designed to be breathable and provide pressure-point relief.
- Layer 6: This layer is made up of 8″ triple-woven, triple-wrapped T3-LUX steel coils. The coils are individually pocketed to enhance motion isolation and provide contouring support.
- Layer 7: The final layer is 0.5″ of support foam. This provides some protection between the coil layer and the bottom cover of the mattress.
One of the memory foam layers is infused with diamonds, which is advertised to enhance Beautyrest Black’s cooling properties by redirecting heat away from the body. It’s not clear where in the mattress this layer is located since The Brick doesn’t provide detailed layer descriptions on their website. We also don’t know for certain which layer is the BlackLux foam.
The mattress cover is made of TENCEL™, a highly breathable material that helps wick away moisture so you don’t wake up sweating. There is also 0.5″ of filling in the top cover that contributes to the mattress’s plush feel.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

Edge Support
Good edge support is important if you like sitting up or lounging on the side of your bed, tend to sleep closer to the edge or need extra stability for getting in and out of bed—especially if you or your partner have mobility challenges.
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Beautyrest Black tested exceptionally low for edge support with a score of just 1.3/10.
(If good edge support is something that is important to you, you may prefer a competing hybrid mattress like Logan & Cove Pinnacle, which earned an above-average edge support score of 6.0/10.)
6.8 /10
Motion Isolation
Beautyrest Black scored above average for motion isolation with a 6.8/10. This is likely because the coil layer is located beneath numerous foam layers. You and your partner should be able to sleep soundly without being woken by each other’s movements.
4.8 /10
Bounce
Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied.
Hybrid mattresses with coils tend to be more bouncy and have a high response to pressure since they’re easy to switch positions and move around on.
Beautyrest Black earned a bounce score of 4.8/10. This is normal for a hybrid mattress, and means you should find it easy to change sleep positions.

6.1 /10
Cooling Features
Beautyrest Black is promoted as a luxury mattress with advanced cooling features. Beautyrest Black earns points for its:
- TENCEL™ cover with a cool-to-the-touch feel and moisture-wicking properties
- Gel-infused foam that allows for enhanced cooling
- Open-cell foam for increased breathability
- Layer of pocketed coils that improve airflow
Beautyrest also advertises a “diamond-infused” foam layer in this mattress, which would also help transfer heat away from the body. We aren’t sure where this layer is located as it is not clear on The Brick’s (nor Beautyrest’s) website.
For a mattress with similar cooling features at less than half the cost, consider Logan & Cove Pinnacle, which has a cooling feature score of 4.7/10. With a layer of cooling gel foam, two layers of micro coils, individually wrapped steel pocketed coils, and a top cover woven with cooling nanofibres, this hybrid mattress is designed to give you a cool, comfortable sleep. Logan & Cove Pinnacle is available for just $1,699 for a queen size, compared to $3,649 for Beautyrest Black.

Company Background
The Beautyrest brand is owned by the Simmons Bedding Company, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1870, Simmons developed and sold its first Beautyrest mattress in 1925, using a design featuring individually wrapped wire coils. Simmons is a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, along with sister company Serta International. Serta Simmons Bedding filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023.
Serta Simmons Bedding is rated “F” (unaccredited) with the BBB and has a customer review score of 1.77/5 stars. The Beautyrest brand specifically has a “Poor” rating on Trustpilot.
In Canada, Beautyrest mattresses are available through various third-party retailers, including Leon’s, Best Buy, The Brick, and Sleep Country Canada. Among the models we tested, the Beautyrest Imperial Granite was purchased from Sleep Country Canada, while the Beautyrest Black was obtained through The Brick. At the time of writing, the Beautyrest Black collection is sold exclusively at The Brick, and the Imperial Collection is exclusive to Sleep Country Canada. As such, it’s also important to consider the policies and reputation of these retailers when researching your purchase.
Sleep Country Canada is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot. Sleep Country’s BBB page is rated “A+” (unaccredited), but the company’s customer review rating is just 1.27/5 stars.
The Brick on the other hand has a BBB rating of “A-” (Unaccredited), with a customer review rating of 1.13/5. They also have a “Poor” Trustpilot rating, with a customer review score of 2/5. As of 2024, The Brick is also being investigated for potentially deceptive marketing practices by the Competition Bureau. Although no wrongdoing has been concluded at this time, this is the second investigation of the retailer for such practices, having previously been investigated in 2013, with an agreement reached in 2018.
Choose a mattress company that’s rated “A+” with BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Beautyrest Black a good mattress?
Beautyrest Black performed well in third-party engineer tests (comissioned by us) when it came to motion isolation, and it also has several advanced cooling features, including premium features like diamond infused memory foam. However, the mattress performed poorly when it came to edge support. With it’s high price tag of $3,649 for a queen size, we think that you can find competing mattresses with similar benefits for a lower price.
We recommend Logan & Cove Pinnacle instead. It offers advanced cooling features and better edge support, as well as a longer sleep trial and warranty—all for a considerably lower price of $1,699 for a queen size.
Is the Beautyrest Black mattress discontinued?
The Beautyrest Black mattress line is still available in Canada, however, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence has been discontinued on The Brick’s website as of May 2025.
Different models in the line may also be discontinued and replaced with newer versions over time. Availability of different models will also differ based on the retailer you purchase from.

Beautyrest Black requires you use a warranty-approved mattress base or boxspring that is compatible with the mattress.
