Which Is Better: Casper, Tempur-Pedic, or Douglas?

Douglas, Casper, and Tempur-Pedic are all well-known mattress brands. But only the Canadian-made Douglas Summit offers superior edge support and motion isolation, advanced cooling features, a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle with your purchase. Best of all, Douglas is priced at just $1,299 for a queen size, offering great value for your dollar.

In comparison, Casper and Tempur-Pedic provide fewer features at a much higher cost. Both have limited cooling features and were outperformed by Douglas in critical areas like motion isolation. Both brands also offer much shorter sleep trials and warranties compared to Douglas.

Casper and Tempur-Pedic also don’t have good customer reviews. Casper is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot with complaints about the company’s warranty, customer service, and deliveries. Tempur-Pedic has an even worse “Bad” rating on Trustpilot, with many customers expressing concerns about issues with returns, warranty claims, and service.

In comparison, Douglas has a great online reputation with 16,300+ five-star reviews from verified customers. The company is also rated “A+” on Better Business Bureau and “Excellent” on Trustpilot. With its generous risk-free sleep trial, much longer warranty, and excellent price point, Douglas is the clear winner.

Firmness

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 5.5/10 for firmness, placing it on the low end of the medium-firm category. It has a good amount of “hug” in the top layer when you lie down, which may make it difficult to change positions or could potentially trigger pressure points.

The Casper‘s 6.3/10 firmness score also makes it medium-firm, but it has a slightly plush feel and plenty of “hug.” This might be ideal if you sleep on your back or side, but it’s something to watch out for if you’re a stomach sleeper. Stomach sleepers may require more support.

Douglas Summit, with a more balanced score of 6.7/10, has less “hug” in the top layer. This means you’ll get the support you need while still benefitting from the comfort of its plush foam layers and cooling gel foam. No matter what position you sleep in, you’ll likely find Douglas Summit provides a comfortable sleep.

Edge Support

Foam mattresses aren’t generally known for having good edge support. However, all three of these mattresses performed well for edge support. The Casper and Douglas Summit both earned a very good score of 7.5/10, while Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored the highest at 8.5/10.

Whichever mattress you choose, you should be able to comfortably sit or lie near the edge of the bed without falling off.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps ensure you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep, even with a restless partner. The Casper scored 6.6/10 for motion isolation, which is an above-average score. You can sleep on this mattress without being disturbed by most of your partner’s movements. Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud, on the other hand, scored 4.6/10 for motion isolation, which is below average compared to other foam mattresses.

Douglas Summit scored the highest for motion isolation with an outstanding 8.8/10. In fact, this is the highest motion isolation score for any mattress we’ve tested. By effectively cancelling out any motion transfer, Douglas helps ensure a restful, undisturbed sleep.

Bounce

Low bounce is important if you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken. Comparing Tempur-Pedic vs Casper, The Casper scored a 4.7/10 for bounce, which is average for a foam mattress. Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud had a slightly lower bounce score of 3.6/10.

However, Douglas Summit has the lowest bounce score of all three mattresses at 3.0/10—a nice side benefit of its excellent motion isolation. You can sleep on Douglas without worrying about any nighttime interruptions.

Cooling Features

Foam mattresses can be known to trap heat, so most modern foam mattresses incorporate cooling features to help ensure breathability and airflow for comfortable sleep. Douglas, Casper, and Tempur-Pedic all feature varying levels of cooling technology

The Casper has some cooling features, with its open-cell foam and perforated foam layer earning it a score of 2.5/10. Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud earned a lower score of 1.6/10—it only has a moisture-wicking top cover and a layer of pocket coils (in TEMPUR-Cloud’s “Medium Hybrid” version).

Douglas Summit outperformed both mattresses, earning a cooling features score of 5.4/10. This is due to its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover, CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres in the top cover, phase-change material, a layer of ecoLight® cooling gel foam, and a layer of breathable Elastex® foam. If you’re looking for a refreshing mattress to keep temperatures balanced as you sleep, Douglas is a winning choice.

Douglas Summit, The Casper, and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud are all combination foam mattresses with three layers each. All of them have different heights and are made with different materials.

Douglas Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer features 2.5″ ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which is lighter, more durable, and more eco-friendly than traditional memory foam. It effectively dissipates heat and improves air circulation. This layer is enhanced by Polar® Temperature Balancing, a phase-change material that regulates mattress temperature. Foam density: 2.5 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 2.5″ of Elastex® foam. This offers both springiness and support, similar to the way many mattresses use latex. But unlike latex, this foam is free from allergy-triggering chemicals. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.
  • Layer 3: The support layer, which makes up half of the mattress’s overall height, is 7″ of motion-isolation foam. Designed to provide exceptional motion isolation support, it virtually eliminates any transfer of movement from the other side of the bed. Foam density: 1.85 lb/ft³.

Douglas Summit’s top cover is removable and machine-washable for easy care. It’s also made using plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that wick moisture away, keeping you cool and comfortable through the night.

Casper Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer includes 1″ of polyurethane foam, which uses open-cell perforations to enhance airflow. Casper says this feature promotes comfort and regulates body temperature during sleep.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 2″ of body-contouring memory foam. This supports your body and prevents long-term sagging in the middle of the mattress. However, memory foam is known for heat trapping, and there aren’t any advanced cooling features to cancel out that effect.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 7″ of dense polyurethane support foam. This foundational component maintains the mattress’s structure and support, ensuring that you won’t sink too far into the upper layers.

The Casper’s top cover is made from polyester, cotton, rayon, and lycra. Despite having a zipper, it isn’t removable or machine washable. You’ll need to spot-clean the mattress in case of any spills or stains.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer is roughly 2″ of TEMPUR® foam. This layer is described as soft and supportive. Unfortunately, the TEMPUR-Cloud website doesn’t share the exact thickness of this layer or its foam density.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is around 2″ of TEMPUR® foam. The TEMPUR-Cloud website describes this as a firmer support layer that slowly adapts and conforms to your body for pressure-point relief. Similar to the comfort layer, the exact measurements and foam density of this layer aren’t available.
  • Layer 3: The support layer contains about 6″ of premium foam. This layer helps the mattress stay structured and supportive.

The TEMPUR-Cloud cover is made of a blend of polyester and spandex. It isn’t removable or machine washable, likely due to the fiberglass in its internal fire sock. While we safely removed the cover for review purposes, we don’t recommend trying this at home. The cover should be spot-cleaned only.

Douglas

Douglas ships to you directly from Ontario or Alberta via FedEx. Including the time taken to dispatch your order, you can expect your Douglas mattress to arrive at your doorstep in 2–10 business days. Shipping is free throughout most of Canada, although a fee may apply for some remote locations. The mattress arrives rolled up in a cardboard box and protected by layers of plastic.

Douglas provides an industry-leading 365-night sleep trial and a generous 20-year warranty. This warranty is twice as long as those offered by Casper and Tempur-Pedic, and the sleep trial is over three times as long. If you decide to return the mattress during your sleep trial, you’ll get free return pickup service and a full refund with no additional fees.

With 16,300+ five-star customer reviews, Douglas has an excellent online reputation. The company maintains a rating of “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” on the Better Business Bureau, with a customer star rating of 4.9/5 stars. Compared to Casper and Tempur-Pedic, this suggests that customers are typically satisfied when they purchase a Douglas mattress.

Casper

Casper ships with UPS and delivers mattresses directly to your door for free across most of Canada. An additional fee may apply for some remote locations. Casper customers can expect their new mattress within 5–15 business days. The mattress arrives rolled up in a cardboard box and protected by layers of plastic.

Casper offers an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial, a 10-year warranty, and free returns for online orders. That said, you should factor in Casper’s “Poor” Trustpilot rating. Several negative reviews mention warranty issuespoor customer servicedelivery problems, and other concerns.

If you purchase a Casper mattress from Sleep Country, you’ll need to follow Sleep Country’s exchange-only policy. This means you won’t receive a refund if you decide to return the mattress—just store credit to buy a different one. In some cases, you have to bring the mattress back to the store yourself, even if you ordered online and there isn’t a store nearby.

Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud mattress used to be available on the mattress’s Canadian website, but can now only be purchased through third-party retailers.

Tempur-Pedic offers a 90-night trial and a 10-year warranty. However, it’s important to note that many customers have left negative reviews on third-party review sites like Trustpilot, expressing concerns with returns, warranty claims, and customer service.

You can also find Tempur-Pedic mattresses at stores like Sleep Country Canada, Costco, The Brick, and Leon’s. Your shipping, sleep trial, and warranty experience will vary depending on the retailer. For example, some retailers like Sleep Country only allow exchanges instead of returns.

Choose the company that’s rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.
