This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored 5.5/10 for firmness. While TEMPUR-Cloud is marketed as having a medium feel, this score places TEMPUR-Cloud in the medium-firm category. Douglas Original is also considered medium-firm with its firmness score of 6.7/10. A medium-firm feel is considered suitable for all sleep styles.

Foam mattresses often have low edge support. However, both Douglas and Tempur-Pedic scored well for edge support in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). Douglas scored a very good 7.8/10, and Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud scored an excellent 8.5/10. You should be able to sit at the side or foot of either mattress securely. It should also be easy to get out of bed in the morning.
Motion isolation is essential for a good night’s sleep, especially if you’re sharing the bed with a restless partner, kids, or pets. The higher the motion isolation, the fewer disturbances you’ll notice from the other side of the mattress. Comparing Tempur-Pedic vs Douglas for motion isolation, TEMPUR-Cloud tested below average with a 4.6/10, Douglas Original scored significantly higher at 8.3/10 for motion isolation.
Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Higher levels of bounce indicates a more responsive sleep surface, while a lower level of bounce can translate to higher motion isolation and body contouring.
Douglas scored 3.1/10 while Tempur-Pedic scored 3.6/10. Both scores are below average for a foam mattress.
Foam can be known to trap heat, so most modern foam mattresses incorporate cooling features to help ensure breathability and airflow for comfortable sleep. Douglas achieves this by incorporating features such as a CoolSense® cover, ecoLight® cooling gel foam layer, and a layer of Elastex, a breathable latex-like foam. All these features earned Douglas a score of 4.2/10.
TEMPUR-Cloud, also a foam mattress, received a cooling features score of just 1.6/10. TEMPUR-Cloud is advertised as a cooling mattress, but the company doesn’t explain exactly what those cooling technologies are. We could only identify two features: the top cover made with moisture-wicking fabric and an optional layer of pocket coils, which isn’t an upgrade available to Canadians.
Choose the mattress with the higher motion isolation and cooling feature scores.

The Douglas mattress cover is made up of polyester, spandex, and sustainable Infinitex™ fibres to keep your sleep surface cool and dry. You can remove and machine-wash Douglas’s top cover to keep it fresh using the 360° zipper.
Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, has a polyester-and-spandex cover that isn’t removable or machine washable. This could be partly because TEMPUR-Cloud contains 23% “glass fiber” (fiberglass) in its internal fire sock netting. (We safely removed the cover for the purposes of this comparison but don’t recommend doing the same at home.) Instead of removing the cover, gently spot-clean the mattress if it gets dirty.
Pick the mattress with a machine-washable top cover.
