Amazon Mattress Review

Amazon is Canada’s top e-commerce retailer. In fact, more than 40% of all Canadian money spent on retail e-commerce goes to Amazon. This is because Amazon makes it easy to order all kinds of household items with the click of a button, with prices that are often more competitive than brick-and-mortar stores.

But when it comes to buying your next mattress, there are pros and cons to buying it from Amazon. Our Amazon mattress review will help you decide whether or not to buy your next mattress from this online retail giant.

Pros

  • Well-known company
  • Variety of mattress types, sizes, prices, and brands
  • RV sizes available
  • Convenient online ordering
  • Free shipping for eligible items and locations

Cons

  • Can’t return unboxed and expanded mattresses
  • Many independent brands are made in countries without the same safety regulations as Canada
  • Limited information about mattress quality, materials, layers, and construction
  • Hard to compare brand names and models with those on other mattress websites
  • Unpredictable supply, with mattresses going in and out of stock regularly

Popular Amazon Mattresses

Amazon offers a wide variety of mattress brands. Some brand names are recognizable, like Zinus, Casper, GhostBed, Serta, Beautyrest, and Polysleep. Others are less common, like NOFFA, Maxzzz, BedStory, and Suiforlun. Some models are exclusive to Amazon and only appear on that platform, making it harder to learn about mattress construction and compare features, benefits, and pricing.

Zinus logo

Zinus is a South Korean company whose Green Tea mattresses are made in China. Zinus Green Tea is advertised as a pressure-relief cooling mattress, but some Amazon reviews complain of heat trapping, back pain, and shoulder pain.

Zinus Green Tea was the subject of a 2020 class action lawsuit because it contained fiberglass without proper disclosure on the label. The lawsuit has since been settled. Zinus now discloses that its products used to contain fiberglass but now use a “carbon-rayon sleeve.”

Casper logo

Casper is a recognized brand name, in part for its association with the Target Corporation and celebrities like Ashton Kutcher. The American-based mattress maker sold a significant share of its Canadian assets to Sleep Country in 2023.

Casper currently sells three models through Amazon.ca: Element, Original Foam, and Original Hybrid. Some versions of these mattresses are known to use fiberglass. One recent review on the US version of Casper’s BBB page states that a customer’s mattress leaked fiberglass.

GhostBed logo

Amazon sells GhostBed Classic, a gel foam and latex mattress, in a queen size only. It costs roughly the same as it does on the GhostBed website, even when you factor in the company’s frequent “sales.”

GhostBed has a poor online reputation, with a Trustpilot rating of “Bad” and a low customer review rating on BBB. Customer reviews on these platforms complain of false advertising, poor product quality, and difficulty getting the company to honour warranty claims.

Serta logo

Serta is an American company and a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC, one of the world’s biggest mattress companies. Serta sells one mattress model on Amazon: Spectrum, which comes in three different firmness levels.

The company has a number of negative online reviews about customer service and quality issues, like mattresses sagging after a relatively short time. As a result, Serta is rated “Poor” on Trustpilot and is rated “F” (unaccredited) with the BBB.

Beautyrest logo

Beautyrest is owned by the Simmons Bedding Company, which is owned by Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC. Beautyrest sells one gel memory foam mattress on Amazon in three firmness levels. The mattresses are made in Canada and fulfilled by Amazon.

On Trustpilot, Beautyrest is rated “Poor” for issues with product quality and not honouring warranty claims. The company is rated “F” (unaccredited) on BBB, which has issued a “Pattern of Complaint” alert about issues with product quality and customer service.

Polysleep logo

Polysleep is an independent Canadian mattress company. Polysleep sells several models on Amazon, from the entry-level Sierra to Zephyr 2.0. These mattresses come in a range of prices and sizes, and are also available through the Polysleep website.

The company is rated “A+” on BBB but has no reviews. The company also has fewer than 200 reviews on its website, even after several years in business. This means it will be hard to get an accurate idea of your potential experience with this mattress.

Is Amazon the best place to buy your next mattress?

Amazon may offer high convenience and low prices, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good place to buy a mattress. There are a few reasons why you should reconsider buying an Amazon Canada mattress:

  • Amazon doesn’t allow returns for used mattresses. Amazon’s typical 30-day return policy only applies to unopened mattresses. You can’t return your mattress if you open it and it doesn’t work for you. In comparison, most mattress companies offer at least a 100-night sleep trial and the option to actually try your mattress at home. Some, like Douglas and Logan & Cove, give you 365 nights.
  • Not all Amazon mattresses are eligible for free delivery, so read the fine print to make sure you aren’t paying extra for delivery. You may have more free delivery options if you have an Amazon Prime membership, depending on where you live and whether you’re buying an item directly fulfilled by Amazon, versus a reseller.
  • Mattress information is limited when it comes to important details like materials, construction, layer thickness, and foam density. You’ll need to do your homework and read reviews, including those on Trustpilot, Better Business Bureau, and r/mattress, to get the full picture of a mattress before you buy.
  • Prices and size availability vary by seller. Some mattresses have limited sizing, and there are few models of popular brands. You may also find that Amazon mattress resellers charge higher prices than the manufacturer. In some cases, you’d be better off buying directly from the mattress company and skipping Amazon altogether.
  • You don’t know the age of the mattress you’re buying. A bed-in-a-box needs to be unboxed and expanded within a few months of purchase, or it could be permanently damaged from being compressed for too long. When you buy a mattress from Amazon, you don’t know when the mattress was made until you receive and unbox it. By then, the damage could already be done.
  • Amazon has a poor online reputation. The company is rated “B” on BBB, but this rating doesn’t factor in customer reviews, which average out to just 1.15/5 stars. Amazon is also rated “Bad” on Trustpilot, based on thousands of customer reviews. Many reviews complain of issues with delivery and customer service.

While it’s convenient to order a mattress from the same place you buy household items, there are other Canadian-made mattresses you should consider.

One of the best examples is Douglas Original: a foam mattress available online at just $799 for a queen size. It’s made to Canadian consumer and safety standards, and you’ll receive a freshly made mattress—no worries about how long it was compressed in a box.

Douglas features impressive edge support and motion isolation, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty. The brand is also rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot. Finally, your Douglas mattress comes with a free bedding bundle—something you won’t get with an Amazon mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Amazon mattresses good?

Of the six mattress brands we tested and reviewed that are currently available through Amazon, none earned an overall rating higher than 6.6/10. If you’re in search of a quality mattress, try Douglas Original, which earned an overall rating of 9.9/10.

Douglas is our number-one pick for the best mattress in Canada. It offers superior motion isolation and edge support, a cooling top layer, a machine-washable mattress cover, and a medium-firm feel that’s ideal for any sleep position. Douglas has all the features you’re looking for at an unbeatable price of $799 for a queen size.

How much are Amazon mattresses?

The price of an Amazon queen mattress varies widely, from under $300 for a 6″ Zinus mattress, to more than $2,500 for Polysleep Zephyr 2.0. The price depends on the size, brand, and accessories you buy. In comparison, Douglas Original sells for just $799 for a queen size.

What’s the best mattress on Amazon Canada?

Of the Amazon mattresses we tested, Zinus Green Tea earned the highest rating at 6.6/10. However, this mattress isn’t currently available through Amazon Canada in a queen size. It’s also important to note that Zinus Green Tea contains fiberglass as a fire safety measure, which can be hazardous if any fibers escape the mattress cover.

While Zinus scored highest, its rating is still nowhere near our top-rated mattress, Douglas Original, which earned an overall rating of 9.9/10. Douglas earned this score due to features like its layer of cooling gel, machine-washable mattress cover, and pressure-point relief. Douglas also offers incredible value at just $799 for a queen size.

How does Amazon deliver mattresses?

Amazon will deliver your mattress to your door. You can track your order’s shipping progress through your Amazon account. You may not have to be home to accept the delivery, but you’ll want to verify the size and weight of your shipment. Delivery times and costs vary depending on which seller is fulfilling your order. If you’re ordering internationally, figure out ahead of time whether you’ll have to pay any import fees.

Typically, a bed-in-a-box is compressed before shipping. This makes it compact and easier to move. That said, most mattresses—even when compressed—are still reasonably heavy and can take two people to move and set up.

How do I return a mattress to Amazon?

If Amazon fulfilled your order, you can return an unopened mattress in its original packaging via the Returns Centre within 30 days. Unboxed and expanded mattresses aren’t returnable. Amazon says it will issue a full refund within 30 days of receiving the shipment. Amazon may also deduct shipping fees from your refund as a “restocking fee,” even if you received free shipping to begin with.

If you notice issues with product quality after that 30-day return period, you’ll have to contact the mattress manufacturer directly for product registration and warranty-related information.

It’s important to note that Amazon’s return policy only applies to items fulfilled by Amazon. Read the fine print of your order carefully before confirming, since Amazon won’t accept returns for items fulfilled by a third-party reseller. You’ll have to follow the reseller’s return policy, which may be very different from Amazon’s.

Want hassle-free, risk-free orders and returns with a much longer sleep trial—and the option to return a mattress after you’ve opened it? You may want to consider ordering directly from a Canadian company like Douglas instead.

Do Amazon mattresses have fiberglass?

Fiberglass fire socks are common in mattresses produced in the United States. A fire sock is a casing that goes around the mattress layers before the cover is put on. Fiberglass is a cheap fire retardant material that helps make mattresses safer, but it also has known environmental and health hazards if it ever leaks from your mattress cover.

There’s no way to know for sure whether every Amazon mattress contains fiberglass, but it’s a good idea to do your own research on mattress brands and models you’re considering. Here are some key clues to watch out for:

  • Country of origin. If a mattress is made in the United States or China, there’s a good chance the mattress contains fiberglass.
  • Materials on the law label. Look for the word “fiberglass,” as well as “glass fibres,” “glass wool,” “glass-reinforced plastic,” “glass-fibre reinforced plastic,” or “fiberglass-reinforced plastic.”
  • Pricing. The cheaper the mattress, the more likely it contains a fiberglass fire sock as an inexpensive way to meet national fire regulation policies.
  • Google the mattress. Head to your favourite search engine and type in the name of the mattress you’re considering buying, along with the word “fiberglass.” This will show you any fiberglass-related information about the mattress, like news articles, Reddit threads, and pending lawsuits.

In the past, Casper has stated that their mattresses contain fiberglass. This statement is no longer on Casper’s website. To be safe, double-check the law label if you purchase a Casper mattress from Amazon.

It’s worth noting that Douglas Original—our top pick for Best Mattress Canada—is fully manufactured in Canada and doesn’t contain fiberglass.

What is Amazon’s mattress warranty?

Amazon doesn’t have a mattress warranty. When it comes to any warranty claims, you’ll have to deal with the manufacturer yourself. (Instead, consider Douglas Original, which comes with a 20-year warranty.)

Should I buy a mattress from Amazon?

Amazon has budget-priced mattresses and the option for fast, free shipping—but there are better places to buy a mattress online. The retailer also sells Canadian brands like GhostBed and Polysleep, but they come with a higher price tag and shorter sleep trial than Douglas, our top pick for Best Mattress Canada.

Where Amazon has a 30-day return policy that doesn’t let you return a used mattress, Douglas has a 365-night sleep trial so you can test out the mattress at home for a full year. Unlike Amazon, Douglas also has a 20-year warranty to protect your purchase. And if you’re looking for value, Douglas costs just $799 for a queen size and comes with a free bedding bundle.

What is a good Amazon mattress alternative?

The best mattress alternative to Amazon is Douglas Original. This mattress is also our number-one pick for the best mattress in Canada. Douglas features a cooling gel layer, a machine-washable mattress cover, superior edge support and motion isolation, and pressure-point relief for all sleeping positions.

The company is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot and “A+” with the Better Business Bureau. Douglas has also earned over 13,000 five-star reviews from happy customers. This mattress is affordably priced at just $799 for a queen size, and it comes with a free bedding bundle, giving you even more value with your purchase.
