Memory Foam Mattress with No Cooling Features

The Casper is an American-made memory foam mattress made by mattress company Casper. It replaced the Casper Original mattress in 2023. Although it’s positioned as Casper’s budget option, The Casper mattress retails at $1,499 for a queen size. It also comes with an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty.

Compared to competing brands like Douglas, The Casper comes with a shorter trial and warranty for a higher price tag. It also doesn’t offer the advanced cooling features you might expect to see for that price—meaning Casper may not provide the value and cooling comfort you’re looking for.

Looking for a high-quality all-foam mattress at a more competitive price? You should consider Douglas.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Casper offers free shipping to most locations in Canada within 1–3 business days. These terms apply whether you buy online, from a retailer like Sleep Country, or through one of Casper’s brick-and-mortar Sleep Store locations. As is often the case with shipping within Canada, delivery to the Canadian territories isn’t free and may take longer than shipping to other regions.

Casper offers an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. However, these timelines fall short compared to brands like Douglas, which offers a considerably longer 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty.

If you purchased The Casper from a different retailer, note that trial and warranty policies may not be the same from those offered directly by Casper. For example, Casper offers free return pickups for a full refund, but that won’t be the case if you purchased from Sleep Country. For precise details about trial returns and warranty claims, contact the retailer directly.

Casper Mattress Construction

Yes

No

The Casper stands 10″ tall and contains 3 layers of foam.

  • Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer includes 1″ of polyurethane foam, which uses open-cell perforations to enhance airflow. Casper says this feature promotes comfort and regulates body temperature during sleep.
  • Layer 2: The middle (transition) layer is 2″ of body-contouring memory foam. This supports your body and prevents long-term sagging in the middle of the mattress. However, memory foam is known for heat trapping, and there aren’t any advanced cooling features to cancel out that effect.
  • Layer 3: The bottom (support) layer is 7″ of dense polyurethane support foam. This foundational component maintains the mattress’s structure and support, ensuring that you won’t sink too far into the upper layers.

All foam used in The Casper mattress is CertiPUR-US®-certified. However, Casper doesn’t publicly share information about specific foam densities.

Casper Original, the previous version of this mattress, provided zoned support beneath your back and hips. The Casper lacks this feature, meaning it may provide less mid-mattress support.

The mattress cover is made of recycled polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra. Casper says the cover isn’t removable, even though it has a zipper, and should be spot-cleaned only. It’s unclear why this is the case, since the company says The Casper uses fiberglass-free construction to meet fire safety regulations.

Choose Douglas for a machine-washable cooling mattress cover and a free bedding bundle with purchase.

Mattress Performance Results

6.3 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), The Casper scored 6.3/10 for firmness. This rating places The Casper in the medium-firm category, which is suitable for all sleep styles. However, it offers plenty of “hug,” meaning you’ll sink into the mattress when you lie down—something to watch for if you’re a stomach sleeper.

7.5 /10

Edge Support

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), The Casper scored 7.5/10 for edge support. This is above-average for a foam mattress. The Casper will provide good support if you sit on the edge or sleep closer to the edge of the mattress.

Need a little extra edge support? Try Douglas Original, which has an edge support rating of 7.8/10.

6.6 /10

Motion Isolation

The Casper scored 6.6/10 for motion isolation, which is above-average for a memory foam mattress. This means that you’ll be able to sleep without noticing most of your partner’s movements (and vice versa).

Still, this score isn’t as strong as Douglas Original, which earned 8.3/10 for motion isolation. With a score this high, Douglas ensures a restful night’s sleep—no matter how many kids or dogs might jump into bed with you.

4.7 /10

Bounce

The Casper scored 4.7/10 for bounce, making it slightly below average compared to other memory foam mattresses. You should find it easy to change sleep positions, but you might find this sleep surface a little too responsive, especially if you’re a light sleeper.

Looking for a little less bounce? Douglas has a bounce rating of just 3.2/10. Paired with its exceptional motion isolation, this reduced level of bounce helps Douglas provide a consistent surface for an undisturbed sleep.

Get better edge support and superior motion isolation with Douglas.

Company Background

Private

“A+”

“Average”

Casper first emerged in 2014 as an early North American bed-in-a-box brand. The company expanded its product lineup over the years with substantial funding from organizations like the Target Corporation and celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher. Today, the company offers mattresses, bedding accessories, and home decor.

Based in New York City, Casper went public in 2020 but was taken private again in 2022 after a stock collapse. Casper also shut down European operations in 2022 and now exclusively operates within the US and Canada. In 2023, Sleep Country acquired the rights to Casper’s Canadian operations.

While the company holds an “Average” rating on Trustpilot and an “A+” rating on Better Business Bureau, Casper only has 1.07/5 stars for customer reviews on BBB at the time this review was written. Several negative Casper mattress reviews mention warranty issues, poor customer service, delivery problems, and other concerns.

It’s also worth noting that the company website only displays a handful of five-star Casper mattress reviews. Without getting the full picture of all customer experiences, it’s difficult to say for certain whether you would enjoy sleeping on a Casper mattress.

Choose Douglas, the mattress with over 13,000 five-star customer reviews.

Should You Buy The Casper?

While The Casper has good motion isolation, its lack of extra features (like advanced cooling or a machine-washable cover) make it hard to justify the comparatively high price tag. The brand also has a limited number of online reviews. We recommend Douglas Original instead.

At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas Original features exceptional motion isolation, superior edge support, a cooling gel layer, and a machine-washable cooling mattress cover. Douglas is also rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot, and has over 13,000 five-star reviews.

You’ll even get a free bedding bundle with your purchase of a Douglas mattress, including a mattress protector, pillow(s), sheets, and pillow protector(s).

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Casper mattresses good?

Casper mattresses are popular, but they don’t offer many of the features you might expect to see for the comparatively higher price tag. We think you’ll get more value out of Douglas. At just $799 for a queen size, you get better edge support, superior motion isolation, more cooling features, and even a free bedding bundle with purchase. You also get a 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty so you can love your mattress longer.

Can I wash The Casper mattress cover?

No. Even though The Casper’s mattress cover has a zipper and the company says it doesn’t use fiberglass, Casper cautions you not to remove the mattress cover for any reason. This means The Casper’s mattress cover is spot-clean only.

How much does The Casper mattress cost?

The Casper costs $999–$1,999, depending on the size you choose. For example, a Casper queen mattress costs $1,499, while a Casper king mattress costs $1,999. The Casper is available in sizes ranging from twin to California king.

Unlike brands such as Douglas, Casper doesn’t produce mattresses in RV sizes.

Does the Casper mattress have fiberglass?

Casper says its mattresses don’t use fiberglass. The Casper uses a silica-based fire barrier. Prior to 2020, fiberglass was used in the manufacturing process to meet fire safety regulations.

READ MORE: Is fiberglass in a mattress dangerous?

Where are Casper mattresses made?

Casper manufactures its mattresses in Georgia and Pennsylvania, USA.

Where can you buy a Casper mattress in Canada?

Casper sells its mattresses through the Casper website, at its Sleep Store locations, and through third-party retailers like Sleep Country.

Does The Casper mattress need a box spring?

The Casper is best used with a box spring, foundation, or other solid base, according to the brand’s website. Slatted supports are not recommended for The Casper.

Can you flip a Casper mattress?

No. The Casper only works as advertised if the mattress is positioned right side up, with each layer in the correct order. However, Casper mattresses can and should be rotated every few months to help spread out regular wear across the mattress.

Can you sleep on a Casper mattress right away?

Yes. The foam requires a few minutes to expand once it’s been unboxed, but you should be able to sleep on the mattress the same night.

What Casper mattress alternatives should I consider?

We recommend buying Douglas Original instead. At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas Original offers better features for almost half the cost of The Casper. It comes with a machine-washable cooling mattress cover, superior motion isolation, greater edge support, a longer sleep trial and warranty, and a free bedding bundle with your purchase.
