Douglas Alpine Mattress Construction
The Douglas Alpine Hybrid mattress stands 13″ tall and has 4 layers consisting of both foam and pocket coils. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1: The top layer is 2.25″ of ecoLift™ cooling gel foam enhanced with Polar® phase-change material. This layer relieves pressure points and regulates temperature by absorbing and redistributing your body heat.
- Layer 2: This 1.75″ layer of Elastex® transition foam contours around your body and adds extra comfort and responsiveness.
- Layer 3: An 8″ layer of Exoforge™ pocket coils provides zoned support beneath your lower back and hips. Encasement foam is placed around the coil layer, contributing to the mattress’s excellent edge support score.
- Layer 4: Below the pocket coil layer, a 1″ layer of motion-isolation support foam provides a high-density base that stabilizes and supports the upper layers while reducing motion transfer.
Douglas uses a proprietary CoolSense® cover made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres, designed to pull moisture away from the sleep surface. The material supports airflow through the mattress and helps limit odour buildup over time. Paired with the mattress’s cooling gel foam and phase-change materials, the cover helps control temperatures while you sleep.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

6.8 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Douglas Alpine Hybrid received a firmness score of 6.8/10. This puts the mattress toward the firmer end of the medium-firm category. Medium-firm mattresses provide an ideal mix of comfort and support, so they’re generally recommended for all sleep styles.

8.8 /10
Edge Support
Edge support keeps you from sliding off the mattress when you sit on or lie near the edge. A mattress with high edge support can also be helpful when you’re getting out of bed, especially if you have mobility issues. Douglas Alpine Hybrid scored 8.8/10 for edge support, which is an excellent score for a hybrid mattress. This could be attributed to the foam-encased coil support layer.
9.2 /10
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is how well a mattress keeps you from noticing movement from the other side of the mattress. Douglas Alpine Hybrid earned a motion isolation score of 9.2/10, which is outstanding for a hybrid. Despite the responsive coils, you should find that the foam layers absorb movement, keeping you from waking your partner when you change positions.
7.7 /10
Bounce
Bounce is a matter of personal preference. Higher bounce lets you change positions easily, while lower bounce ensures a more consistent sleep surface. Douglas Alpine Hybrid received a bounce score of 7.7/10. This is high for a hybrid mattress. If you need some extra help when you change positions or getting up from your mattress, a responsive mattress like Douglas Alpine Hybrid might be a good choice for you.
(If you prefer less bounce, consider the all-foam Douglas Alpine instead, which has a lower bounce score of 3.6/10.)

7.6 /10
Cooling Features
Douglas Alpine Hybrid incorporates several advanced cooling features to provide a temperature-regulated sleep and help the sleeper avoid overheating at night. It also has more advanced cooling features than Douglas Original Hybrid, with the addition of phase-change material that absorbs and redistributes heat. Douglas Alpine Hybrid earns points for its:
- CoolSense® cover with fibres that draw moisture away to help regulate surface temperature
- ecoLift® cooling gel foam engineered to release heat during sleep
- Polar® phase-change material that responds to body heat to help limit temperature buildup
- Open-cell foam design that allows greater airflow than closed-cell foam
- Elastex® transition foam designed to support airflow
- Individually wrapped coils that create space for air to circulate within the mattress
Douglas Alpine Hybrid provides these cooling features at $1,079 for a queen size, which is lower than many competing hybrid mattresses with fewer features. (Want even more cooling features? You might want to upgrade to Douglas Summit Hybrid, which has a cooling features score of 7.9/10.)

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Douglas Original Hybrid and Douglas Alpine Hybrid?
Douglas Original Hybrid has the same layers as Douglas Alpine Hybrid, but it’s 1″ shorter due to slightly thinner layers of ecoLift™ cooling gel foam and open-cell Elastex® foam. Douglas Original Hybrid also doesn’t have Polar™ phase-change material, which Douglas Alpine Hybrid incorporates for added temperature control. In addition, Douglas Alpine Hybrid is a slightly firmer mattress and earned higher scores for edge support and motion isolation.
It’s also worth noting the difference in price. Douglas Original Hybrid costs $879 for a queen size, while Douglas Alpine Hybrid costs $1,079 for a queen size.
How firm is the Douglas Alpine Hybrid?
Douglas Alpine Hybrid earned a firmness score of 6.8/10 in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). This places the mattress on the firmer side of the medium-firm category. Medium-firm mattresses are ideal for all sleep positions, whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach.
Where are Douglas mattresses made?
Douglas mattresses are made in Canada.
Is the Douglas mattress cover machine washable?
Yes, the cover can be removed and machine washed. Unzip the top panel, clean it on a gentle wash cycle, and let it air dry or place it in the dryer on a low setting. Once dry, the cover can be zipped back into place without lifting or repositioning the mattress.
Can you flip a Douglas mattress?
No, Douglas doesn’t recommend flipping their mattresses, as they are not designed to be flipped. Flipping a mattress changes the order of the layers, which changes its comfort and performance.
Where do I buy a Douglas mattress?
