Should You Buy the Emma Body Adapt Mattress?

Emma Body Adapt is a medium-firm foam mattress that performed well in areas like motion isolation (6.1/10) and edge support (8.8/10), according to third-party engineering tests (commissioned by us). This mattress also features zoned support and an antimicrobial cover. However, at $1,199 for a queen-size mattress, it is priced higher than comparable alternatives on the market and offers limited cooling features.

For instance, at $799 for a queen, the Canadian-made Douglas Original offers similar edge support (7.8/10) and motion isolation (8.3/10), but comes with advanced cooling features like cooling gel foam and a machine-washable cover. It also comes with a free bedding bundle, which includes a cotton sheet set, a duvet cover, a down alternative duvet, pillow(s), pillow protector(s), and a mattress protector.

Yes

The Emma Body Adapt mattress, which has 3 layers, is supposed to measure 10″ tall. However, the mattress that we received was slightly shorter, at 9.5″. All the foam layers in this mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1: The first layer is 1.5″ of open-cell foam, which Emma describes as “ultra-soft”. This comfort layer cushions the body’s natural contours while also being breathable and temperature-regulating.
  • Layer 2: The second layer, which makes up the transition layer, is 1.5″ of Emma’s MemoryAdapt™ foam, which provides pressure relief and also absorbs movements on the mattress.
  • Layer 3: The last layer is 6.5″ of zoned support foam. This layer is durable and provides enhanced, targeted support via its zoned cut-outs in the mattress. Zoned support provides more sturdy support in areas like your back and hips, while allowing more sink in areas like your shoulders and legs for pressure relief. These cut-outs also increase breathability in the mattress.

The top cover is made of polyester and treated with “Puro Tex”. According to an Emma representative, this treatment is an antibacterial technology that uses “microcapsules of friendly bacteria” that open throughout the night, triggered by movement friction, and actively neutralize allergens and help keep the mattress surface clean. The Emma Body Adapt mattress cover is also removable and machine-washable.

Mattress Performance Results

6.0 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Emma Body Adapt scored 6.0/10 for firmness. This places the mattress in the medium-firm category, which is firmer than advertised on the Emma website, where it’s described as plush. Medium-firm mattresses are typically well-suited for most sleepers, regardless of their sleeping position.

Edge Support

Good edge support in a mattress is important if you like sitting up, sleeping, or lounging closer to the edge of the bed, especially if you have mobility issues.

Emma Body Adapt earned an excellent edge support score of 8.8/10, meaning that you should be able to sit comfortably on the edge of this mattress.

6.1 /10

Motion Isolation

If you’re a light sleeper who’s easily woken by movements from the other side of the bed, like your partner’s tossing and turning, or your pet jumping up into bed at night, motion isolation should be a priority for you when shopping for a mattress. Foam mattresses are known for excelling in this area, yet the Emma Body Adapt mattress only received an above-average score of 6.1/10 for motion isolation.

(If you are looking for a more affordable mattress with stronger motion isolation, consider Douglas Original and its excellent motion isolation (8.3/10), at only $799 for a queen size, compared to Emma’s price tag of $1,199.)

4.2 /10

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Foam mattresses tend to offer slower response times, resulting in lower bounce scores.

Emma Body Adapt scored 4.2/10 for bounce, which is a below-average score. A lower bounce score is good if you prefer a slower-moving mattress that’s less responsive to movement.

(If you are looking for a mattress with even lower bounce, consider Douglas Original, which has a bounce score of 3.1/10.)

Cooling Features

Emma Body Adapt offers some cooling features which help you sleep cooler throughout the night. Emma Body Adapt earns points for its:

  1. Moisture-wicking and breathable cover, which keeps the mattress surface dry
  2. Open-cell foam, which promotes air flow and makes the mattress more breathable
  3. Ventilated foam layer for added air circulation

If you’re looking for a more affordable mattress option with an even higher cooling features score of 5.0/10, consider Douglas Original, which offers a cooling cover, open-cell foam, cooling gel foam, and more.

Want a high-performing mattress that’s also more affordable? Consider Douglas Original.
