High-Priced Foam Mattress with Poor Customer Reviews

Serta iComfort TempActiv II is a combination foam mattress featuring a washable top cover and copper-infused cooling gel. The mattress is priced at $3,999 for a queen size—a steep price for an all-foam mattress with limited features.

Although this mattress comes from a well-established brand, Serta has a Trustpilot rating of “Poor”, with a customer review score of 1.8. Its parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, has a BBB rating of “F” (unaccredited), with a customer review score of 1.79.

In comparison, competitor mattress Octave Vista has more cooling features and five-zone ergonomic support for a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep—at just $899 for a queen size.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Note: Serta iComfort TempActiv II was available in Canada through Sleep Country but has been discontinued. You may still be able to find it through some mattress resellers. We purchased this mattress from Sleep Country, so the information in this section is specific to Sleep Country’s delivery, sleep trial, and return practices.

Mattresses typically ship from Sleep Country within 3–10 business days including dispatch and delivery time, depending on the company’s inventory and delivery schedule. You have 100 nights to test your mattress at home using Sleep Country’s standard sleep trial.

If you want to return the mattress, you need to bring the mattress back to the store yourself. There are no refunds, only exchanges for store credit. A $65 exchange fee applies. Serta iComfort TempActiv II comes with a 10-year warranty, which is industry standard.

When it comes to reviews on customer protection sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau, they are important to consider to get a full picture of the customer experience. Serta has a Trustpilot rating of “Poor”, with a customer review score of 1.8. Their parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, has a BBB rating of “F” (unaccredited), with a customer review score of 1.79. Sleep Country Canada, which sells Serta mattresses, is rated “A+” (unaccredited) on BBB, with a customer review score of just 1.27/5 stars. They are also rated “Poor” on Trustpilot.

In comparison, competing memory foam mattresses like Octave Vista offer a 365-night sleep trial with free return pickup and a full refund. The mattress also comes with a 15-year warranty. Octave is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot, with a customer review score of 4.6/5, and its parent company (GoodMorning.com) is rated “A+” on BBB, and maintains a customer review rating of 4.89/5 stars.

Yes

Serta iComfort TempActiv II is a combination foam mattress with 5 distinct layers. It stands just over 11″ high. All foam used in this mattress’s construction is CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1: This layer is 0.75″ of gel memory foam. It works with the layer below to provide comfort as you lie on the mattress, and contains cooling technology to keep you from overheating as you sleep.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 1″ of memory foam, which works with the top layer to provide body-contouring comfort while you sleep.
  • Layer 3: This 1″ layer of support foam acts as a transitional layer to prevent you from feeling the denser support layer at the bottom of the mattress.
  • Layer 4: A 1.5″ layer of memory foam helps support the upper transition layer.
  • Layer 5: The final layer is 7″ of dense support foam, which gives the mattress most of its weight, support, and structure.

The mattress cover is woven from Serta’s proprietary TempActiv™ fabric. Serta says that this cotton and polyester cover has “temperature-regulating technology infused directly into the fabric”; however, it’s not clear what technology this is.

Mattress Performance Results

photo of water bottle lying on the edge of the Serta iComfort TempActiv II mattress to demonstrate edge support

4.8 /10

Edge Support

Good edge support is important if you like sitting up or lounging on the side of your bed, tend to sleep closer to the edge or need extra stability for getting in and out of bed—especially if you or your partner have mobility challenges.

Serta iComfort TempActiv II scored 4.8/10 for edge support in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). This is a below-average score compared to other mattresses we have tested.

(If you want a more cost-effective foam mattress with great edge support, consider Octave Vista, which earned a very good 7.5/10 edge support score.)

6.8 /10

Motion Isolation

Serta iComfort TempActiv II scored above average for motion isolation at 6.8/10. You and your partner are less likely to notice each other’s movements as you sleep.

(Octave Vista scored even better for motion isolation at 7.3/10, which is great for helping you get an uninterrupted sleep, especially if you are a light sleeper.)

1.9 /10

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Foam mattresses tend to offer a slower response time, which translates to better motion isolation, compared to mattresses with coils like hybrid mattresses.

Serta iComfort TempActiv II scored 1.9/10 for bounce, which is one of the lowest bounce scores of any of the Serta mattresses we’ve tested. Because there’s plenty of “hug” in this mattress, you’ll find it difficult to change positions while you sleep.

(Octave Vista‘s layer of Elastex® foam gives it a 3.7/10 bounce score, which makes it easy to change sleep positions and get up in the morning.)

3.0 /10

Cooling Features

The Serta iComfortTempActiv II mattress is a combination foam mattress that is advertised as having some cooling features. This mattress earns points for its:

  1. TempActiv fabric in the top cover, which the manufacturer claims is infused with cooling technology
  2. Gel-infused foam which promotes cooling in the memory foam layer
  3. Copper infusion which transfers heat away from the body

If you’re looking for a mattress with more advanced cooling features, consider Octave Vista, which has a cooling feature score of 7.2/10. In addition to CopperGel™ infused memory foam, Octave Vista also has additional features like PolarMAX® phase-change material, Elastex® foam (a breathable latex-like foam that promotes better air circulation than traditional memory foam), and cooling nanofibres.

Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC

Founded in 1931, Serta is an American company based in Illinois. Serta’s biggest licensee, the National Bedding Company, was acquired by two private equity firms in 2005. After the following restructuring, Serta International became a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC. The company also acquired independent mattress brand Tuft & Needle in 2018. In early 2023, Serta filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and concluded financial restructuring later that year.

Serta sells through third-party retailers like Sleep Country Canada and The Brick, as well as individual suppliers and retailers. This means that you will be subject to the individual retailer’s policies such as return policies.

It’s also important to consider the company’s reputation on consumer protection websites such as Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau. On Trustpilot, the company is rated “Poor”, with a customer review score of 1.8/5 stars. Serta’s parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, has a Better Business Bureau profile rated “F” (unaccredited) with a customer review rating of 1.79/5 stars.

Should You Buy Serta iComfort?

Serta iComfort TempActiv II has a few useful features, like a machine-washable cover and copper-infused cooling gel. However, it’s far more expensive than comparable memory foam mattresses.

We recommend Octave Vista instead. Its advanced cooling technologies include a moisture-wicking cooling nanofibre cover, copper-infused cooling gel foam, phase-change material, and breathable Elastex® foam. Vista’s five-zone ergonomic support system also provides targeted pressure relief where your muscles and joints need it most.

Vista is much more affordable at just $899 for a queen size, compared to $3,999 for Serta iComfort. Your purchase also includes a generous 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Serta iComfort a good mattress?

Serta iComfort TempActiv II has a high price tag of $3,999 for a queen size, and has limited features, including below-average edge support and limited cooling features. However, this mattress has above-average motion isolation, a medium feel, and is manufactured by a well-established brand.

Competing memory foam mattress Octave Vista is a better choice with its several advanced cooling technologies, machine-washable cover, and five-zoned support beneath your back, shoulders, and hips that relieves pressure where you need it the most. These features all work together to give you a better night’s sleep—at just $899 for a queen size.

Can you flip a Serta iComfort mattress?

No, you shouldn’t flip the mattress. Like most modern mattresses, the Serta iComfort’s layers are designed to be oriented one way only.

How long does a Serta iComfort mattress last?

According to experts, a good mattress should last 7–10 years. However, this can vary depending on the materials used in the mattress’s construction and how frequently it is used. There’s no strict rule, but if you notice visible sagging, lumps, or a decline in comfort and support, it may be time to replace it. Regular maintenance and proper care can help extend a mattress’s lifespan.

What Serta mattress alternatives should I consider?
