Our Rankings
Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

Product Details
Tuft & Needle Original is a 10″ all-foam mattress. The mattress is described as firm on the Tuft & Needle website. However, third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us) showed that the mattress is medium-firm—and just barely above a medium. Tuft & Needle Original has very good edge support but below-average motion isolation, which is unusual for a foam mattress.
Looking at the mattress’s construction, it’s not clear why Tuft & Needle Original costs $1,899 for a queen size. It contains just 2 foam layers. The top layer contains graphite and gel foam to provide cooling, but these are the only cooling features. The plush cover, made of micro-polyamide and polyester, isn’t machine washable and must be spot-cleaned only. There are no other visible features to justify the mattress’s high price point.
Tuft & Needle Original also seems to fall short in quality, according to customer reviews. Some customers who purchased the mattress through Amazon have complained that the mattress sags and degrades within a few years of purchase. Others say that the mattress traps heat or has caused them back pain.
In comparison, competing all-foam mattress Douglas costs just $799 for a queen size. It comes with cooling features, a machine-washable cover, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 20-year warranty. Douglas has over 16,300 five-star reviews, and the company is rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Tuft & Needle Original is available from Sleep Country Canada. (Until May 2024, it was also available through the Tuft & Needle website, but this is no longer an option.) Sleep Country Canada offers free shipping for orders over $75 to most Canadian locations within 3–5 business days. If you live in the Territories or Newfoundland and Labrador, delivery takes 7–10 days and costs $120.
After receiving Tuft & Needle Original, you have 100 nights to try it at home. You can return the mattress to Sleep Country within the trial window. That said, you’ll need to bring the mattress back to the store yourself, as Sleep Country doesn’t offer return pickup.
Sleep Country also doesn’t provide refunds for returned mattresses. You can only exchange your mattress for in-store credit, minus a $65 exchange fee. If you exchange Tuft & Needle for a more expensive mattress, you will need to pay the price difference. You also won’t get a refund if you trade the mattress for a less expensive model. You’ll have to spend the remaining store credit on furniture, accessories, or other Sleep Country products.
Tuft & Needle comes with Sleep Country’s standard 10-year warranty, which covers manufacturing defects only. It doesn’t cover normal wear and tear or incidental damage. In comparison, comparable foam mattress brand Douglas comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty. You also have the option of free return pickup with a full refund.
Choose the mattress with a longer warranty and a less restrictive return policy.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction
Tuft & Needle Original stands 10″ tall. It has just 2 layers of foam, which is unusual for a mattress that costs $1,899 for a queen size. All foam used in Tuft & Needle Original is CertiPUR-US® certified. Tuft & Needle doesn’t disclose foam densities.
- Layer 1: The top (comfort) layer is 3″ of T&N Adaptive foam. This open-cell foam is infused with graphite and cooling gel to dissipate heat. It also relieves pressure as it contours to your body’s shape.
- Layer 2: The bottom (support) layer is 7″ of support foam. This dense foam layer gives the mattress its foundation and bulk, and prevents you from sinking down too deeply while lying down.
The mattress cover, designed to be plush and breathable, is made of micro-polyamide and polyester. It isn’t removable or machine washable.
Canada’s best mattress comes with a machine-washable cover.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 30 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

5.6 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Tuft & Needle Original scored 5.6/10 for firmness, placing it in the medium-firm category. This score is inconsistent with the “firm” feel described on Tuft & Needle’s Canadian website.
This mattress should provide comfortable support for all sleep positions. However, depending on your needs, you may find you need a little more support if you sleep on your stomach.
Looking for a foam mattress with extra support? Douglas scored a 6.7/10—still medium-firm, but with more support for side, back, and stomach sleepers.

7.3 /10
Edge Support
Tuft & Needle Original earned a score of 7.3/10 for edge support. This is a very good score for a foam mattress. You should be able to sit on the edge of the mattress with no issues. You also won’t need to worry about falling off the bed if you sleep closer to the edge.
Looking for even more edge support? Check out Douglas, which has strong sidewalls and a higher edge support score of 7.8/10.
4.3 /10
Motion Isolation
Tuft & Needle Original earned a score of 4.3/10 for motion isolation. This is below average, especially because foam mattresses tend to provide good motion isolation. You and your partner will likely notice each other’s movements while you’re lying next to each other.
Need extra motion isolation for a restful night’s sleep? Douglas has a superb motion isolation score of 8.3/10—nearly twice as high as Tuft & Needle’s score.
4.1 /10
Bounce
Tuft & Needle Original earned a bounce score of 4.1/10. This is a below-average score for a foam mattress, but you should still be able to change positions without difficulty.
Prefer a mattress with less bounce? We think you’ll like Douglas with its lower bounce score of 3.1/10.
