An Average Bed-In-a-Box Hybrid

S&S Hybrid is a Euro-top hybrid mattress available in three firmness options: firm, medium-firm, and plush. The medium-firm option we purchased for this review costs $1,180 for a queen size. The queen-size medium-firm model is $90 more expensive than the firm option, but the plush model with added cooling features is $485 more than the medium-firm option.

This mattress comes with a 15-year warranty, a 365-night sleep trial and a free sleep bundle. Silk & Snow is rated “A” on Better Business Bureau; however their customer review rating is just 2.0/5 stars.

In comparison, the competing Canadian mattress, Douglas Original Hybrid, is more affordable at $949 for a queen size. Douglas comes with multiple built-in advanced cooling features, higher performance scores in areas like edge support and motion isolation, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 15-year warranty. Douglas’s parent company also has a much higher 4.89/5-star rating on the BBB compared to Silk & Snow.

S&S Hybrid contains 3 mattress layers that work together to provide a balance of comfort and support. All layers are CertiPUR-US® certified, but the exact density of each foam layer is unknown.

  • 1st Layer: 1″ The comfort layer is 1″ of quilted cooling gel foam and hollow fibre fill, adding a touch of softness for a plush and refreshing feel.
  • 2nd Layer: 2″ of high-density cooling gel-infused transition memory foam that adds pressure relief and supports the transition between the soft top layer and firmer coil base.
  • 3rd Layer: 8″ of double-tempered pocketed spring coils are designed to respond independently to movement, helping to limit motion transfer and provide better spinal alignment.

The S&S Hybrid has a non-removable polyester cover, so it should be spot-cleaned in case of any spills or stains.

Silk & Snow’s cover is advertised as having antimicrobial properties. The cover on the medium-firm model is made of 100% polyester. Silk & Snow doesn’t detail how they’ve treated the polyester to be antimicrobial, although typical methods are treating the material with silver ions, copper, or zinc salts.

Mattress Performance Results

A photo of the firmness test on the SS Hybrid

6.8 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress had a deflection of 2.8″ when laid on, resulting in a 6.8/10 firmness score. This places the mattress on the firmer side of the “medium-firm” category, which is good for most side, back, and stomach sleepers.

(If you want a more affordable hybrid mattress with a touch more cushioning, consider Douglas Original Hybrid, which has a firmness score of 6.0/10.)

A photo of the edge support test on the SS Hybrid mattress

6.8 /10

Edge Support

S&S Hybrid features a thick foam encasement around the perimeter of the mattress. But despite this reinforcement, this mattress had a deflection of 5.3″ from a seated position. This gives it a 6.8/10 score for edge support, which is just above-average for a hybrid mattress.

(If edge support is important for you, you may prefer the competing mattress, Douglas Original Hybrid. It has a much higher edge support score of 8.3/10, giving you more usable space on your mattress and a greater sense of stability when sitting or lying near the edge.)

7.9 /10

Motion Isolation

Hybrid mattresses don’t always offer strong motion isolation because of the bounce and movement their inner coils create. S&S Hybrid performed serviceably in motion isolation testing, earning a very good score of 7.9/10. You won’t feel most small movements from the other side of the bed on this mattress.

(Couples and light sleepers may need a hybrid mattress with an even higher motion isolation score. Alternatives like Douglas Original Hybrid earned an outstanding score of 9.0/10 for motion isolation.)

3.9 /10

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Hybrid mattresses with coils tend to be more bouncy and have a high response to pressure, making them easier to switch positions and move around on. Despite this, S&S Hybrid scored a 3.9/10 for bounce, which is slightly below average for a hybrid mattress.

(If you’re looking for a mattress with greater bounce and a more responsive sleep surface, you might prefer Douglas Original Hybrid with its bounce score of 8.0/10.)

Cooling Features

S&S Hybrid isn’t generally considered a cooling mattress, but it does have a couple of advanced cooling features to help regulate temperature. This mattress earns points for its:

  1. Layers of gel-infused foam
  2. Layer of pocket coils, which provide some breathability

If having more cooling features in your mattress is a priority for you, consider Douglas Original Hybrid instead, which has a higher cooling feature score of 5.3/10. Like Silk & Snow Hybrid, Douglas’s construction includes a layer of cooling gel foam and airflow-promoting pocket coils. However, the Douglas Hybrid mattress has additional advanced features like a moisture-wicking cover and open-cell foam.

Silk & Snow is a North American company specializing in bed and bath products for Canadian and American customers.

The company later expanded its product line to include two more mattresses and a line of bath products.

In early 2023, Silk & Snow was acquired by Sleep Country Canada. Silk & Snow mattresses are currently available only through the Silk & Snow website and their branded shops. However, Sleep Country carries some accessories from Silk & Snow.
