Which Is Better: Douglas or Juno?

The hybrid mattress market in Canada has historically been dominated by pricier, luxury options. Luckily, a few Canadian brands are setting out to change this by offering high-quality hybrid mattresses at accessible prices.

Douglas and Juno are two popular brands in the Canadian mattress space, making mattresses locally in cities like Calgary and Toronto. While either is a strong choice, which mattress is right for you will depend on what you’re looking for in a mattress.

Starting at just $499 for a twin size, Juno Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress with strong edge support, multiple cooling features, a 120-night sleep trial, and 15-year warranty. In comparison, Douglas Original Hybrid starts at $749, and comes with outstanding motion isolation, a removable top cover, an industry-leading 365-night sleep trial, as well as a 20-year warranty. Both mattresses are also available in RV sizes, and come with a complimentary sleep bundle.

Firmness

When tested by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), both Douglas Original Hybrid and Juno Hybrid fell into the medium-firm category. The Douglas mattress earned a firmness score of 6.0/10, aligning more with a true medium-firm feel. In comparison, the Juno Hybrid mattress landed on the higher end of the medium-firm category with a 6.9/10 firmness score.

Medium-firm is generally considered a universal firmness level, seeing as it suits all sleep positions, including front, side, and back sleeping. That said, sleepers looking for a firmer feel may prefer Juno Hybrid, while sleepers wanting more cushioning should opt for Douglas Hybrid.

Edge Support

Hybrid mattresses are generally known for their edge support, since coils and reinforced foam perimeters can help provide a sturdy mattress surface. Both Douglas and Juno were no exception here, as each earned strong scores in this category.

The Douglas Original Hybrid mattress scored an excellent score of 8.3/10 for edge support, which should help ensure you feel well supported across the entire mattress. However, Juno Hybrid excelled with an even higher edge support score of 9.3/10. This is an outstanding score for a hybrid mattress.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation in a mattress is useful if you share a bed with a partner, pet, or child, and you’d like to sleep undisturbed by their movements. Juno Hybrid earned a score of 5.3/10 for motion isolation. This is an average score for a hybrid mattress, which means you may experience some, but not all, of the movement from across your mattress. If you want a mattress that helps reduce motion transfer even more, you might prefer the Douglas Hybrid mattress, which earned an outstanding motion isolation score of 9.0/10.

Bounce

One of the reasons a sleeper will opt for a hybrid mattress is their tendency to have a higher level of bounce and, therefore, responsiveness. This is a popular choice for those who like a little extra help when changing sleeping positions. While bounce in a mattress is a matter of personal preference, hybrids will generally have more bounce than all-foam options.

The Douglas Original Hybrid mattress received a bounce score of 8.0/10, which is higher than average for a hybrid mattress. In comparison, Juno Hybrid had a lower, but still above-average score of 6.2/10 for bounce.

(Prefer a mattress with less bounce? Check out the all-foam counterparts of these mattresses, Douglas Original and Juno.)

Cooling Features

Both Douglas Hybrid and Juno Hybrid incorporate cooling features to improve temperature regulation throughout the night. The Juno Hybrid mattress earned a score of 4.7/10 for cooling features thanks to its cooling gel-foam layer, layer of breathable pocketed coils, and optional Cool+ cover upgrade (for an additional $79).

To compare, Douglas Original Hybrid earned a higher cooling features score of 5.3/10. Douglas earned points for its moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover infused with cooling fibres, layer of cooling-gel infused foam, breathable Elastex foam layer, and pocketed coils that allow for better airflow throughout the mattress. If you are someone who overheats at night and prioritize cooling in a mattress, Douglas Hybrid might be the better option for you.

The Douglas Hybrid and Juno Hybrid were both launched as coiled versions of each brand’s original all-foam models, the Douglas Original and Juno mattresses. Each mattress features 4 layers, including a layer of zoned support coils. However, Juno Hybrid is shorter in height at 10″, while Douglas Original Hybrid measures 12″ tall.

Douglas Original Hybrid Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer is 2″ of ecoLift™ cooling gel foam, intended to relieve pressure points and help regulate heat.
  • Layer 2: A 1″ layer of Elastex® transition foam contours around your body and provides a cushioning effect, along with a little extra responsiveness.
  • Layer 3: The 8″ layer of Exoforge™ pocket coils provides zoned support under your lower back and hips. Encasement foam wraps around the coils to strengthen the mattress edges.
  • Layer 4: The bottom layer is 1″ of motion-isolation support foam, providing a stable foundation for the upper layers and limiting motion transfer across the mattress.

Douglas Original Hybrid features the brand’s CoolSense® cover, which is designed with Infinitex™ to draw excess moisture away while you sleep. This helps keep you cool and dry throughout the night. For easy cleaning, the Douglas mattress cover can be fully unzipped, removed, and can be machine-washed, all without lifting the mattress.

Juno Hybrid Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The comfort layer has 2″ of cooling gel foam to offer temperature regulation and gentle cushioning as you lie down.
  • Layer 2: The transition layer is 1″ of foam to improve comfort and cushion sleepers from the denser coil layer below.
  • Layer 3: The support layer features 6″ of individually pocketed coils. The middle 1/3rd of the coils is firmer (i.e. zoned) to give your back and hips the support they need. For added edge support, the coils layer is encased in strong foam that runs the perimeter of the mattress. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk.
  • Layer 4: The bottom layer is a 1″ foam pad that acts as a base for the pocketed coil layer above.

The Juno Hybrid mattress cover is made from a soft-knit material for a cozy feel. Hot sleepers can choose to upgrade to the Cool+ cover (for $79) for more temperature regulation, which is woven with moisture-wicking cooling yarn. Both versions of the cover are non-removable and require spot-cleaning. To help protect your mattress from spills and stains, you’ll get a free mattress protector with your Juno purchase.

All Juno and Douglas mattresses are made in Canada, and ship for free to most Canadians via FedEx. Either mattress will take around 2–10 business days to arrive at your doorstep. Remote delivery locations may incur an additional fee and have longer shipping times.

Following the bed-in-a-box model, both brands ship their mattresses compressed, rolled up, wrapped, and packaged in a convenient cardboard box with built-in handles. Set-up is straightforward, and either mattress will expand in a couple of minutes once unpackaged. You should be able to sleep on your mattress the very same night.

Where Douglas and Juno begin to differ is in their policies. Each brand offers a longer-than-average sleep trial, but of different lengths. Juno mattresses come with a competitive 120-night sleep trial, while Douglas’s trial is more than three times as long at 365 nights. The sleep trial gives you time to test out the mattress in the comfort of your own home to decide if it’s the right fit for your needs. If you decide to return either mattress, both brands will arrange a free pickup, donate the mattress to a local charity or recycle it, and issue you a full refund.

In the case you end up loving your new mattress, each one is backed by a longer-than-industry-average warranty. Douglas mattresses come with a 20-year warranty, while Juno offers a 15-year warranty for its mattresses.
