Exchange-Only Budget Foam Mattress

Bloom River is a foam mattress with layers of gel memory foam, convoluted foam, and aerated foam with bamboo charcoal. It’s exclusively sold by Sleep Country for $499 for a queen size, making it Bloom’s lowest-priced mattress. Sleep Country offers a 100-night sleep trial for all mattresses.

The store doesn’t offer refunds for returns, only store credit with a $65 exchange fee. Bloom River comes with a 5-year warranty, which is shorter than the industry-standard 10-year warranty offered for all other Bloom mattresses. In comparison, competitor foam mattress Juno also includes cooling gel foam and comes with a 120-night sleep trial, free return pickup with a full refund, and a 15-year warranty. You also get a free bedding bundle with your mattress purchase.

Every Bloom mattress Sleep Country sells comes with an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial. However, if you return your Bloom mattress, you must pay a $65 exchange fee and will only receive in-store credit, no refund. If you want a more expensive mattress, you’ll have to pay the difference. The mattress comes with a 5-year warranty, the shortest of any Bloom mattress. In comparison, the industry-standard warranty length is 10 years.

Competing brands like Juno offer a 120-night trial. If you return your Juno within the trial period, you’ll get a free mattress pickup with a full refund. Juno also backs their product with a 15-year warranty. Juno’s parent company, GoodMorning.com, is rated “Excellent” on Trustpilot, and maintains a rating of “A+” on BBB, with a customer review rating of 4.89/5 stars.

Yes

The Bloom River mattress measures 7″ tall and has 3 layers of foam.

  • Layer 1: Bloom River’s comfort layer is 0.75″ of gel memory foam. This layer is designed to provide immediate comfort when you lie down and keep you cool throughout the night.
  • Layer 2: The mattress’s transition layer is 2.5″ of convoluted foam. This layer has a distinctive egg-carton shape, which creates air channels that allow warm air to escape.
  • Layer 3: The third and final layer of Bloom River is 3.75″ of support base foam. Infused with bamboo charcoal to help manage odours, this base layer creates the mattress’s structure.

The polyester top cover is machine washable and made of “double jacquard antimicrobial fabric.” The Bloom mattress’s interior is protected with a rayon sock that Sleep Country says helps reduce flame hazard.

Mattress Performance Results

6.7 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Bloom River scored 6.7/10 for firmness. This score is consistent with a medium-firm feel, despite the mattress being advertised as firm. Medium-firm mattresses are suitable for all sleep styles.

Edge Support

Good edge support is important if you like sitting up or lounging on the side of your bed, tend to sleep closer to the edge or need extra stability for getting in and out of bed, especially if you or your partner has mobility challenges.

Bloom River earned an edge support score of 9.0/10. This is an outstanding score for a foam mattress. You should be able to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed.

6.9 /10

Motion Isolation

Foam mattresses are known for their above-average motion isolation, which is important if you are a light sleeper or a partner who tosses and turns in their sleep. Bloom River earned a motion isolation score of 6.9/10, which is above-average for a foam mattress. You shouldn’t notice too much movement from your partner.

4.5 /10

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Low bounce creates a less responsive mattress, meaning that there is also less motion transfer and a less disruptive sleep, while higher bounce means that the mattress is more responsive, making it easier to change positions.

Bloom River scored 4.5/10 for bounce, which is considered average for a foam mattress. However, this mattress provides enough responsiveness to allow you to change your sleeping positions more easily.

(If you are looking for a less bouncy mattress, consider Juno, which has a bounce score of 2.5/10. )

3.8 /10

Cooling Features

Bloom River is promoted as a budget mattress, not a cooling mattress. However, it does provide some advanced cooling features to help with temperature regulation. Bloom River earns points for its:

  1. Top layer of gel-infused foam that allows for enhanced cooling
  2. Convoluted (egg carton shaped) foam for improved airflow
  3. Aerated foam for improved air circulation
  4. Bamboo charcoal infusion for odour management, which also helps draw heat away from your body

Should You Buy Bloom River?

Bloom River performed well in third-party engineer testing, but it only comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a -year warranty. Buying a mattress from Sleep Country also means you’re subject to their exchange-only policy.

We recommend Juno instead. Juno is also priced at $499 for a queen size but comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial, the option of free return pickup with a full refund, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bloom River mattress good?

Bloom River is a medium-firm mattress that performed well in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). Priced at $499, it is the lowest-priced Bloom mattress sold through Sleep Country Canada. It comes with a 100-night exchange period, and a shorter-than-industry-average 5-year warranty.

If you want a longer 120-night sleep trial, free return pickup with full refund, and a 15-year warranty, you may want to consider a brand like Juno instead.

Is the Bloom mattress cover machine washable?

Yes, Bloom River’s cover is machine washable. According to the care instructions affixed next to the law label, the cover can be machine washed in cold or warm water on a delicate cycle.

What does the Bloom warranty cover?

The 5-year Bloom River mattress warranty covers any defects from the manufacturing process. It doesn’t cover incidental damage after delivery, like stains, cuts, or rips. It’s also important to note that the Bloom River warranty is much shorter than any other Bloom warranty, most of which have a 10-year industry-standard warranty.

Where is the Bloom River mattress made?

Bloom mattresses are made in countries like China, Spain, and Canada, according to a Sleep Country representative. These locations aren’t publicly disclosed—they’re only visible on the law labels of the mattresses we purchased for testing purposes. The Bloom River mattress we purchased was made in Vietnam.

How much does the Bloom River mattress cost?

Bloom River pricing ranges from $399 to $699, depending on the size you choose. A queen-size Bloom River is available for $499.

What Bloom mattress alternatives should I consider?
