Our Rankings
Edge support and motion isolation are factored into our overall mattress ratings. These scores are shown in green (scores of 5.0+), yellow (3.0–4.9), or red (2.9 and below). Firmness, bounce, and cooling features are a matter of personal preference and aren’t part of our rating system, so these scores are shown in grey.

Product Details
Bloom River is the Bloom brand’s lowest-priced mattress. It’s made in countries like Spain and China, but these locations aren’t publicly disclosed.
Like many budget-friendly mattresses, Bloom River is designed to fit a strict budget. It comes with a standard set of features you’d expect within its price range, as well as a layer of bamboo charcoal–infused aerated foam. Bloom claims that this layer promotes air circulation and helps manage odours.
While Bloom River has an attractive price of $499 for a queen size, Sleep Country’s exchange-only policy could leave you spending more than you budgeted for. You can only exchange the mattress for in-store credit, with an exchange fee of $65. You’ll also have to pay the difference to exchange Bloom River for a more expensive mattress.
Finally, Sleep Country doesn’t offer home pickups for returns, so you’ll have to bring the mattress back to the store yourself.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Sleep Country uses its own shipping services across most of Canada. However, the company uses Sleep Country Canada to deliver Bloom mattresses to the northern territories, Newfoundland and Labrador, and some remote areas. You should get your order within 3–5 business days.
Bloom River arrives in a cardboard box. After removing the two layers of plastic wrap, we found that Bloom River takes a couple of hours to expand to its full 7″ height.
You have a 100-night sleep trial to decide if you want to keep your Bloom River. This is an average sleep trial length. However, if you return your Bloom mattress, you must pay a $65 exchange fee and will only receive in-store credit—no refund. So if you return Bloom River, you’ll likely end up paying even more to exchange it for a different mattress.
The mattress comes with a 5-year warranty. This is the only Bloom mattress to come with such a short warranty, which can raise concerns about product quality. Sleep Country has also received a significant number of customer complaints on Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot related to filing warranty claims.
Competing brands like Juno offer a 120-night trial. If you return your Juno within the trial period, you’ll get a free mattress pickup with a full refund. Juno also backs their product with a 15-year warranty.

Bloom Mattress Construction
The Bloom River mattress measures 7″ tall and has 3 layers of foam.
- Layer 1: Bloom River’s comfort layer is 0.75″ of gel memory foam. This layer is designed to provide immediate comfort when you lie down and keep you cool throughout the night.
- Layer 2: The mattress’s transition layer is 2.5″ of convoluted foam. While this layer looks like an egg carton, its job is to create air channels that allow warm air to escape.
- Layer 3: The third and final layer of Bloom River is 3.75″ of support base foam. Infused with bamboo charcoal to help manage odours, this thin base layer creates the mattress’s structure.
Sleep Country states that the top cover is machine washable, but doesn’t disclose the materials in the mattress cover. When removing the mattress cover, we came across a protective layer that resembled a fire sock. And when we cut open the sock to reach the inner foam layers, particles from the sock landed on the floor and shattered.
The presence of shattered fragments from fabric may be indicative of fibreglass, which can be harmful to the eyes and skin. However, we couldn’t find a label within the mattress that describes what materials are used in the fire sock. To be on the safe side, we don’t recommend removing the mattress cover.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 30 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

Edge Support
Foam isn’t a strong material, so this type of mattress tends to have low edge support. Bloom River earned an edge support score of 5.7/10. This is average for a foam mattress.
You should be able to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed, but this mattress may not be the right fit if you need extra edge support.
6.8 /10
Motion Isolation
Foam mattresses are known for their above-average motion isolation. Bloom River earned a motion isolation score of 6.8/10, which is on par with other foam mattresses. You can expect to feel a small amount of movement from the other side of the bed.
3.3 /10
Bounce
Since foam mattresses typically provide good motion isolation, they tend to have lower bounce ratings. Bloom River scored a 3.3/10 for bounce—an average score for an all-foam mattress.
Looking for a foam mattress with even less bounce? Juno scored 2.5/10 for bounce, which means a more restful night’s sleep.

Cooling Features
Bloom River is promoted as a budget mattress, not a cooling mattress. However, it does provide some cooling features to help with temperature regulation. Bloom River earns points for its:
- Top layer of gel-infused foam that allows for enhanced cooling
- Convoluted (egg carton shaped) foam for improved airflow
- Charcoal infusion for odour management, which also helps draw heat away from your body
If you’re looking for an affordable mattress with more advanced cooling features, take a look at Juno instead. Juno comes with a layer of cooling gel foam that reduces heat buildup and allows for enhanced airflow. It also comes with an optional cooling cover crafted from special cooling yarn, which keeps surface temperatures low.

Company Background
Bloom was established in 2018 and is owned by publicly traded company Sleep Country. Founded in 1994 in Vancouver, BC, Sleep Country now has hundreds of brick-and-mortar stores across Canada. The company sells a variety of sleep products, including mattresses, pillows, bedding, and furniture.
Sleep Country claims a commitment to providing Canadians with a better night’s sleep that’s unparalleled in the industry. However, online reviews don’t seem to agree. The company has a substandard reputation among consumer trust agencies: an “A+” (unaccredited) rating on Better Business Bureau with a star rating of 1.22/5, and a “Poor” on Trustpilot with over 50% of reviews being one star. Common complaints from customers include product issues and difficulty with warranty claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bloom mattress cover machine washable?
Sleep Country states on their website that the Bloom mattress cover is machine washable. However, when removing the mattress cover, we came across a protective layer that resembled a fire sock. And when we cut open the sock to reach the inner foam layers, particles from the sock landed on the floor and shattered.
The presence of shattered fragments from fabric may be indicative of fibreglass, which can be harmful to the eyes and skin. We couldn’t find a label within the mattress that describes what materials are used in the fire sock. To be on the safe side, we don’t recommend removing the mattress cover.
What does the Bloom warranty cover?
The 5-year Bloom River mattress warranty covers any defects from the manufacturing process. It’s not entirely clear what this includes. Most mattress warranty information on the Sleep Country website is related to innerspring mattresses. It’s also important to note that the Bloom River warranty is much shorter than any other Bloom warranty.
Where is the Bloom River mattress made?
Bloom mattresses are made in countries like Spain, China, and Canada. None of these locations are publicly disclosed—they’re only visible on the law labels of the mattresses we purchased for testing purposes. The Bloom River mattress we purchased was made primarily in Spain.
How much does the Bloom River mattress cost?
Bloom River pricing ranges from $399 to $699, depending on the size you choose. A queen-size Bloom River is available for $499.
Is the Bloom River mattress good?
Bloom River is positioned as a value foam mattress. This makes it ideal if you’re mattress shopping on a budget. However, you won’t get extras like a 120-night sleep trial, free return pickup with full refund, and 15-year warranty. If these features are important to you, consider a brand like Juno instead.
What Bloom mattress alternatives should I consider?
Juno is a good Canadian-made Bloom mattress alternative. This medium-firm, all-foam mattress is ideal for all sleep styles. It costs just $499 for a queen size. For that price, you also get a 120-night sleep trial, free return pickup with full refund, and 15-year warranty.
