Product Details
Emma Original is the brand’s 10″ hybrid mattress, replacing the older all-foam design previously sold in Canada. It combines multiple foam comfort layers with a base of zoned pocket coils, as well as a machine-washable cover. This coil system provides support under the hips and lower back. Above the coils are foam layers intended to offer pressure relief and reduce motion transfer.
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Emma Original earned a firmness score consistent with a firm feel. This level of firmness can be comfortable for back and stomach sleepers, but may not be ideal for side sleepers. The mattress also earned an excellent score for edge support and a very good score for motion isolation. Its cooling features include a moisture-releasing mattress cover, open-cell foam that wicks away heat and humidity, and the natural breathability of the pocket coil system.
Need a hybrid mattress with a medium-firm feel that’s ideal for all sleep styles? You might prefer Douglas Original Hybrid. It earned a similarly excellent edge support score, along with a higher motion isolation score. It also comes with a machine-washable cover, a longer 365-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle for a lower price of $949 for a queen size.
Ideal For: Back Sleepers, Stomach Sleepers

Emma Mattress Construction
The Emma Original mattress is meant to measure 10″ tall and has 4 layers, including foam and the pocket coil support layer. The mattress that we received was 9.5″ tall. The foam layers are CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1: The top 0.5″ layer of breathable Airgocell® foam is designed with an open-cell structure to improve airflow and help pull moisture away, keeping the surface cooler and more comfortable.
- Layer 2: A 0.5″ layer of MemoryAdapt foam gently molds to your body, helping spread weight more evenly and reduce pressure buildup.
- Layer 3: A 0.5″ layer of high-density SupportBase foam adds firmness and stability, making it easier to move and change positions on the mattress.
- Layer 4: The 8″ pocketed coil system has seven support zones extending across the mattress, delivering extra responsiveness and good edge support around the perimeter.
Emma Original has a breathable top cover made from polyester. The knit design of the cover allows for some airflow, although polyester isn’t known to be the most breathable material when used on its own. This cover can be removed and machine-washed for easy cleaning.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

7.0 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Emma Original had a deflection of 2.5″. This translates to a firmness score of 7.0/10, which is consistent with a firm feel. Firm mattresses are good for back and stomach sleepers, but can sometimes cause pressure points for side or lighter weight sleepers.
(Need a mattress with a medium-firm feel that fits all sleep styles? Check out Douglas Original Hybrid with its firmness score of 6.0/10.)

8.5 /10
Edge Support
Edge support is how well a mattress supports your weight while you’re sitting on or lying near the edge of the bed. Hybrid mattresses typically provide more edge support than foam mattresses. Emma Original earned an edge support score of 8.5/10, which is excellent for a hybrid mattress.
7.1 /10
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation helps keep you from noticing movement from a partner or pet on the other side of the bed. Foam mattresses tend to have stronger motion isolation than hybrid mattresses because foam excels at absorbing movement. Emma Original earned a motion isolation score of 7.1/10. This is a very good score for a hybrid mattress.
(Need a mattress with greater motion isolation? Douglas Original Hybrid has thicker foam layers, and earned a higher score of 9.0/10.)
6.2 /10
Bounce
Bounce is a matter of personal preference. A lower bounce score means a mattress provides a more consistent sleep surface, while a higher score indicates a more responsive mattress. Hybrid mattresses are often more bouncy than foam mattresses. Emma Original received a bounce score of 6.2/10, which is above average for a hybrid mattress.
(Want a mattress that’s even more responsive? Consider Douglas Original Hybrid with its higher bounce score of 8.0/10.)

2.4 /10
Cooling Features
Emma Original isn’t promoted as a cooling mattress, but is advertised as having a few cooling features. The mattress earns points for its:
- Breathable mattress cover that releases moisture during the night
- Layer of Airgocell® open-cell foam that promotes airflow
- System of breathable pocket coils that allow air to flow through the mattress
Looking for a mattress with more advanced cooling features? Douglas Original Hybrid comes with features like a moisture-wicking cover, cooling gel foam, open-cell foam, and breathable coils. These features come at a more accessible price of just $949 for a queen size.
