Douglas Original Hybrid is a 12″ hybrid mattress with 4 layers of foam and pocketed steel coils. In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Douglas Original Hybrid earned a firmness score that places it in the medium-firm range. Medium-firm mattresses are generally ideal for all sleep styles. This mattress also has outstanding edge support and motion isolation, and a high bounce score.
Douglas Original Hybrid is the hybrid version of the award-winning all-foam Douglas Original. It’s designed with advanced cooling features like ecoLift® gel-infused foam to dissipate heat, open-cell Elastex® foam that promotes airflow, and naturally breathable pocket coils that allow air to move more easily through the mattress. The machine-washable mattress cover is also made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that wick away moisture for added temperature control.
At just $879 for a queen size, Douglas Original Hybrid is the lowest-priced hybrid option in the Douglas lineup. It’s also one of the lower-priced hybrid mattresses available in Canada. Like all Douglas mattresses, it’s available in a range of RV sizes. It also comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle.

Douglas Original Hybrid Mattress Construction
The Douglas Original Hybrid mattress is 12″ tall and has 4 layers of foam and pocket coils. All foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US® certified.
- Layer 1: The comfort layer is 2″ of ecoLift™ cooling gel foam, intended to relieve pressure points and help regulate heat.
- Layer 2: A 1″ layer of Elastex® transition foam contours around your body and provides a cushioning effect, along with a little extra responsiveness.
- Layer 3: The 8″ layer of Exoforge™ pocket coils provides zoned support under your lower back and hips. Encasement foam wraps around the coils to strengthen the mattress edges.
- Layer 4: The bottom layer is 1″ of motion-isolation support foam, providing a stable foundation for the upper layers and limiting motion transfer across the mattress.
Douglas Original Hybrid uses the brand’s CoolSense® cover, made with plant-based Infinitex™ fibres that pull moisture away from the sleep surface. The material is designed to promote airflow through the mattress and help limit odours over time. Along with cooling elements like gel-infused and open-cell foams, the cover supports steady temperature regulation throughout the night. It’s also removable and machine washable for easy cleaning.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.
6.0 /10
Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Douglas Original Hybrid received a firmness score of 6.0/10. This is consistent with a medium-firm feel. Medium-firm mattresses are recommended for all sleep styles because they offer a strong balance of comfort and support.

8.3 /10
Edge Support
Edge support refers to how stable the mattress feels when you sit or sleep close to the edge. It can also help when getting in and out of bed, especially if you have mobility issues or need a bit of extra support. Douglas Original Hybrid earned an edge support score of 8.3/10. This is an outstanding score for a hybrid mattress.
9.0 /10
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation describes how well a mattress keeps you from noticing movement on the other side of the bed. Douglas Original Hybrid earned a motion isolation score of 9.0/10, which is outstanding for a hybrid mattress. Thanks to its foam layers, movement is absorbed instead of transferred. With a score this high, rolling over or changing positions is less likely to wake your partner.
8.0 /10
Bounce
When you’re choosing a mattress, bounce is a matter of personal preference. Some people like a springier feel because it makes it easier to move around or switch positions, while others prefer a more stable surface with less responsiveness. Douglas Original Hybrid scored 8.0/10 for bounce. This score is high for a hybrid mattress.
(Need a less responsive mattress with many of the same features? Try the all-foam Douglas Original, which has a bounce score of 3.1/10.)

5.3 /10
Cooling Features
Douglas Original Hybrid has many of the same advanced cooling features as Douglas Original, but with the addition of breathable coils. This mattress earns points for its:
- CoolSense® cover made with moisture-wicking fibres to help reduce sweat buildup
- ecoLift® cooling gel foam engineered to release heat throughout the night
- Open-cell foam construction that allows more airflow than closed-cell foam
- Elastex® transition foam designed to keep air moving through the mattress
- Individually wrapped coils that promote natural airflow and ventilation
Douglas Original Hybrid is more competitively priced than many other mattresses with similar cooling features, with an accessible price tag of $879 for a queen size.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the Douglas Original Foam and Douglas Original Hybrid?
There are several differences between Douglas Original vs Douglas Hybrid. Both mattresses contain cooling gel foam, Elastex® foam, and motion-isolation support foam, but in varying thicknesses. Douglas Original Hybrid has a layer of individually pocketed coils surrounded by encasement foam for added edge support. It also performed higher for motion isolation and edge support than the all-foam version in third-party engineer testing.
Douglas Original Hybrid is priced slightly higher at $879 for a queen size, compared to $799 for the all-foam Douglas Original. However, both mattresses still come with a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle.
Do Douglas mattresses have fiberglass?
No, Douglas mattresses don’t contain fiberglass. Douglas mattresses are made in Canada and use different fire-safety materials.

How long does a Douglas Hybrid mattress last?
According to experts, a good mattress should last 7–10 years. However, this can vary depending on the materials used in the mattress’s construction and how frequently it is used. There’s no strict rule, but if you notice visible sagging, lumps, or a decline in comfort and support, it may be time to replace it. Regular maintenance and proper care can help extend a mattress’s lifespan.

Can you put a Douglas Hybrid mattress on a box spring?
Douglas doesn’t recommend placing its mattresses on a box spring, which is made from a wood frame with thin wire. This isn’t supportive enough for most modern mattresses. In fact, using a box spring can damage your Douglas mattress and will void your warranty. Instead, use a supportive base like a platform bed, wood foundation, slatted base, or adjustable bed.
Where are Douglas mattresses made?
All Douglas mattresses are made in Canada.
Is the Douglas Hybrid mattress cover machine washable?
Yes, the Douglas mattress cover is machine washable. Simply unzip the top panel, run it through the washing machine on a gentle cycle, and either dry the cover on a low setting or let it air-dry. The cover can be zipped back onto the mattress once it’s fully dry.
Can you flip a Douglas mattress?
No, you shouldn’t flip a Douglas mattress. This changes the order of the layers and can affect the mattress’s performance and comfort.
Where can I try a Douglas mattress?
You can try Douglas mattresses in-store at select locations (see the Douglas website for details). If there isn’t a location near you, the 365-night sleep trial lets you purchase the mattress and test it out at home. You can return the mattress for a full refund during the trial period if it doesn’t fit your sleep needs. Douglas will pick up the mattress for free, and will have it donated or recycled once the return is complete.
