Product Details
Serta Chinook is a 9″ tall mattress and has 2 layers of foam, combining a top layer of gel foam with a denser soy-based foam support layer. This mattress has only one cooling feature: a layer of cooling gel foam. Despite having a zipper that runs along the edge of the mattress, the polyester cover isn’t removable or machine washable.
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Serta Chinook earned a firmness score that’s consistent with a medium-firm feel. Testing also showed that the mattress has excellent edge support, above-average motion isolation, and below-average bounce.
Competing mattress Juno provides similar features at a lower price. At just $499 for a queen size, Juno also has above-average motion isolation and excellent edge support. It provides more cooling features like gel-infused foam, open-cell foam that promotes breathability, and a cover sewn with cooling yarn (offered as an upgrade). Juno also comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial, the option of free return pickup and a full refund, and a 15-year warranty.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns
Serta Chinook is sold exclusively at Canadian Tire and can be purchased online or in-store. You can either pick it up from the store or have it delivered to your address. Delivery options include curbside or front door delivery. Because the mattress is considered a heavy object, it can only be delivered within 100 kilometres of your nearest Canadian Tire store. The exact shipping fee varies depending on the item weight and your location.
Serta Chinook ships from Canadian Tire warehouses across Canada via Canada Post and other couriers. The delivery date will vary depending on when you schedule it. You have the option to book same-day delivery for an additional fee of $9.99 (plus tax). You will need to be home to sign for the order during your delivery window. The mattress arrives rolled up in plastic and shipped inside a cardboard box.

Serta mattresses typically come with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. However, Canadian Tire offers a shorter 90-day return period for unopened mattresses, which you will have to bring to the store yourself. This policy applies to Serta Chinook because it’s exclusively offered through Canadian Tire.
When we contacted Serta about the sleep trial for mattresses sold through third-party retailers, they informed us that the retailer’s return policy would apply, and returns should be coordinated directly with them. Canadian Tire’s customer service stated they might accept an opened mattress for a refund, but this would be an exception and at the discretion of the store. Delivery fees are non-refundable.
In comparison, competitor mattress Juno comes with a 120-night sleep trial so you can try it at home for 4 months and confirm that it’s right for you. Juno also comes with a longer 15-year warranty and free delivery to most locations in Canada. In case of a return during the trial period, Juno will arrange free return pickup and provide a full refund.

Serta Chinook Mattress Construction
Serta Chinook has 2 layers of foam and stands 9″ tall. According to Canadian Tire’s product page, this mattress is PolyFluoroAlkyl Substances (PFAS) Forever Chemical Free certified.
- Layer 1: The top layer is 2.5″ thick and made of cooling gel foam. This layer is designed to provide cooling and body-contouring comfort.
- Layer 2: The bottom 6.5″ layer is made of higher-density soy-infused foam. This layer comprises most of the mattress and stops you from sinking too deeply into it when you’re lying down.
The mattress cover is made of 100% polyester. This is a durable material but not the most breathable. Despite having a zipper, the cover isn’t removable or machine washable, so any stains or spills will need to be spot-cleaned.

MattressReviews.ca commissions licensed third-party engineers and uses public data to rate mattresses on over 40 criteria.
This allows us to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website. Engineer independence and operating standards help ensure their results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable.
Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict mattress testing methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. Foam and hybrid mattress test results are scored on separate scales to ensure fair contextual performance representation as much as possible. The full report has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.

Firmness
In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Serta Chinook had a deflection of 1.8″. This resulted in a firmness score of 6.9/10, placing the mattress in the medium-firm category. Medium-firm mattresses are generally considered ideal for all sleep positions.
(Need a mattress that’s a little lower on the firmness scale? Check out Juno, which scored 6.0/10 for firmness.)

Edge Support
Good edge support is important if you like sitting up or lounging on the side of your bed, tend to sleep closer to the edge, or need extra stability for getting in and out of bed—especially if you or your partner have mobility challenges. With a deflection of 3.9″, Serta Chinook earned an excellent edge support score of 8.3/10.
(Want high edge support at a more accessible price? Check out Juno with its lower price tag and similar edge support score of 8.0/10.)

Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how much movement on one part of the mattress can be felt from another part of the mattress. Foam mattresses usually have better motion isolation than innerspring and hybrid mattresses. Serta Chinook earned a motion isolation score of 6.8/10, which is above average for a foam mattress.
3.7 /10
Bounce
Bounce is a matter of personal preference. A mattress with high bounce has a springy surface that makes it easy to change positions, while a mattress with a lower bounce score has a less responsive surface. Serta Chinook earned a bounce score of 3.7/10. This is below average for a foam mattress.

1.2 /10
Cooling Features
Serta Chinook isn’t advertised as a cooling mattress, but it has one cooling feature to help with temperature control. This mattress earned points for its:
- Layer of cooling gel foam that absorbs extra heat and helps regulate mattress temperature
Need a mattress with more cooling features at a lower price point? Consider Juno, which has a layer of cooling gel foam and open-cell foam construction. You can also upgrade to the Cool+ cover made from special cooling yarn for a cooler sleep surface. Juno offers these cooling features for a lower price than Serta Chinook.

Company Background
Founded in 1931, Serta is an American company based in Illinois. Serta’s biggest licensee, the National Bedding Company, was acquired by two private equity firms in 2005. After the following restructuring, Serta International became a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC. The company also acquired independent mattress brand Tuft & Needle in 2018. In early 2023, Serta filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and concluded financial restructuring later that year.
Serta sells through third-party retailers like Sleep Country Canada and The Brick, as well as individual suppliers and retailers. This means that you will be subject to the individual retailer’s policies such as return policies.
It’s also important to consider the company’s reputation on consumer protection websites such as Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau. On Trustpilot, the company is rated “Poor”, with a customer review score of 1.9/5 stars. Serta’s parent company, Serta Simmons Bedding, has a Better Business Bureau profile rated “F” (unaccredited) with a customer review rating of 2/5 stars.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Serta mattresses good?
Serta Chinook performed well in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us). It’s conveniently available at Canadian Tire, and it’s accessibly priced at $749 for a queen size. However, with a limited 90-night sleep trial and only an industry-average 10-year warranty, we think there are similar mattress options that provide more features at a lower price.
We recommend Juno instead. It also has a medium-firm feel, excellent edge support, and above-average motion isolation. However, Juno comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and the option of free return pickup with a full refund. Your mattress also comes with a free bedding bundle—all for a lower price of $499 for a queen size.
How much is a Serta mattress?
Prices for Serta Chinook range from $549 for a twin size to $749 for a queen size.
What does the Serta warranty cover?
Serta offers a limited 10-year warranty that covers manufacturing defects. Coverage length varies depending on the mattress model. The warranty doesn’t cover firmness, body impressions smaller than the amount indicated on your mattress’s law label, bent corners, or mattresses bought second-hand.
Do Serta mattresses have fiberglass?
Serta Chinook doesn’t contain fiberglass. Serta’s US website says their mattresses use “a proprietary blend of natural and synthetic fibers” to meet US Consumer Product Safety standards. As with any mattress, always read your mattress tag before trying to remove your mattress cover.

How do you buy a Serta mattress at Canadian Tire?
You can purchase Serta Chinook online or in-store at Canadian Tire. Online orders can be picked up in-store or delivered to your address for a fee, depending on your location. Canadian Tire only delivers heavy items like mattresses within a 100-kilometre radius of your nearest store. If you live outside of that radius, you’ll need to visit the store for pickup.
What Serta mattress alternatives should I consider?
We recommend Juno as a Serta mattress alternative. This budget-friendly Canadian foam mattress comes at a lower price point of $499 for a queen size, while having many of the same features as Serta Chinook. Juno has similarly excellent edge support and above-average motion isolation, as well as a cooling gel foam layer for temperature control.
The mattress comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and free return pickup with a full refund. Your purchase also includes a free bedding bundle, which includes a cotton sheet set, pillow(s), pillow protector(s), and a mattress protector.
