5. Silk & Snow
Plush Memory Foam Mattress
Product Details
Silk & Snow caters to a specific demographic of sleepers by offering a medium foam mattress. If you prefer a slightly cushier sleep surface or being cradled by your mattress, you’ll likely enjoy the softer feel of the Silk & Snow mattress. However, this means you might not feel enough support as you sleep, especially if you weigh over 115 lbs or sleep on your stomach.
It also has good motion isolation and lower-than-average bounce, which are typical with foam mattresses.
Is the S&S Mattress right for you?
The Silk & Snow Original foam mattress might be the right fit if you are a back or side sleeper who wants:
- To spend less than $1,000 on a queen-size mattress
- A mattress with a medium level of firmness
- Cooling gel and memory foam
- CertiPur-US® certified foams
- A machine-washable cover
- Free delivery to major metro areas
6. The Endy
Foam Mattress with Limited Features
Product Details
Endy has a medium-firm feel with a cushioning top layer, which you may like if you’re a back or stomach sleeper. It has good motion isolation and medium bounce. Both of these features are normal for a foam mattress and ideal if you share your bed with a partner, kids, or pets.
However, Endy has below-average edge support, which might make it difficult for you to get out of bed or sleep along the edge. The Endy mattress also has no special cooling features, which may be a concern if you tend to sleep hot.
Is Endy right for you?
The Endy mattress might be the right fit if you are a back or stomach sleeper who wants:
- A simple, all-foam queen-size mattress for less than $1,000
- A medium-firm mattress with a bit of cushioning in the top layer
- A machine-washable mattress cover
- Brand-matching bedding, pillows, and accessories
- CertiPur-US® certified foams
- Free shipping to major metro areas
7. Haven LUX Hybrid
Hybrid Pillow-Top Latex Mattress
Product Details
Haven LUX Hybrid is a hybrid mattress available online via Haven Sleep Co’s website. It comes in two firmness options: Classic Plush (firm) and Classic + Advanced Pressure Relief (medium). Its layer construction includes foam and coil layers, meant to provide additional support if you’re the kind of sleeper who needs it. For this review, we ordered the Medium version.
Haven LUX Hybrid stands 14″ tall, with the pocket coil layer and micro coil layer accounting for 10″ of that height. The remaining four layers, not including the quilted mattress cover, are less than 1″ thick each. While these layers should work together to provide comfort and support, they may not be thick enough to provide all of the contouring, cooling, and spine-aligning features that Haven promotes.
This mattress offers very good motion isolation and an above-average level of bounce. However, edge support is lower than average for a hybrid. This is surprising given Haven LUX Hybrid’s reinforced foam edges.
Is Haven LUX Hybrid right for you?
The Haven mattress might be the right fit if you are a back or stomach sleeper who wants:
- A natural latex mattress
- A springy pillow-top mattress with lots of bounce
- Micro-coils and pocketed coils
- Copper-infused, perforated, and cooling gel foams
8. Avocado Green
Expensive Organic Mattress
Product Details
In Canada, the Avocado Green mattress comes in two firmness options: Standard (firm) and Medium. The Medium feel is achieved by adding a pillow-top to the mattress for an extra $300–600, depending on the mattress size.
Avocado Green is made by hand, and its eco-conscious manufacturing process features GOLS-certified organic latex, wool, and cotton. However, some materials are still imported. International transportation will still affect the mattress’s carbon footprint.
This mattress lacks advanced cooling and other features found in many modern hybrid mattresses. It also doesn’t come with a mattress cover. Avocado recommends using its Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protector, which will add $349–549 to the cost of the mattress, depending on size. This mattress cover is machine-washable.
Avocado Green is available online in sizes ranging from twin to California king, with prices between $1,999 and $3,699 (depending on which size and firmness option you order).
This price point is much higher than many other hybrids, even when taking into account its handmade and eco-conscious construction. In contrast, competing hybrid mattress Logan & Cove Choice costs just $999 for a queen size. Logan & Cove also offers a free bedding bundle with purchase, which Avocado doesn’t provide.
Is Avocado Green right for you?
The Avocado Green mattress might be the right fit if you are a stomach or back sleeper who wants:
- Multiple firmness options
- A mattress using GOTS and GOLS certified materials
- Convenient online purchasing and boxed delivery
- A longer-than-average sleep trial and warranty
American-Made Costco Mattress
Product Details
The Novaform ComfortGrande Plus mattress is designed to provide the comfort of memory foam at an affordable price. It has a medium-firm feel and comes in queen and king sizes only.
This mattress uses eco-conscious construction, including memory foam layers and a cooling top layer to enhance comfort. However, some customers have reported that the mattress has a tendency to trap heat, despite its cooling features.
Novaform ComfortGrande Plus is available online from Costco at $689 for a queen size or $849 for a king size. You might have trouble finding the mattress in-store for this price, since brand availability and pricing can vary depending on which Costco you shop at. You also can’t buy the mattress without a paid Costco membership.
Is Novaform ComfortGrande Plus right for you?
The Novaform ComfortGrande mattress might be the right fit if you are a side or back sleeper who wants:
- A medium-firm mattress with cooling features
- A mattress that’s available at Costco
- A mattress that’s under $1,000
10. GhostBed Classic
Latex and Foam Mattress
Product Details
The GhostBed Classic mattress is a latex and foam mattress with a firm feel. It features a layer of aerated latex and cooling gel foam to provide immediate cushioning when you lie down without sacrificing breathability for heat regulation.
This GhostBed mattress has some sinkage, which should work for various body types. While the GhostBed Classic has some interesting materials, it lacks features like a machine-washable cover for convenient and easy cleaning.
At $2,495 for a queen size, GhostBed Classic is notably more expensive than comparable foam mattresses like Douglas Original. We have also noticed GhostBed increasing their usual prices for sales (see August 2023 vs December 2023). This makes it look like they’re offering more significant discounts, when in fact they’re raising prices. GhostBed also requires customers to pay back any discounts before issuing returns.
Is GhostBed Classic right for you?
The GhostBed Classic mattress might be the right fit if you are a side or back sleeper who wants:
- A mattress with cooling features
- A mattress with a latex foam layer
- A mattress that’s made in Canada
- CertiPur-US® certified foams
- Convenient online purchasing and boxed delivery

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mattress in a box?
A mattress in a box, also known as a bed-in-a-box, is a type of mattress that is compressed, rolled up, and packaged in a compact box for convenient shipping and delivery. Now, you can easily order a mattress online and set it up at home without any trouble.
Why should I buy a mattress in a box?
Mattresses in a box have grown in popularity for good reason. They’re convenient to purchase because they can be ordered online and delivered directly to your doorstep. You don’t need to visit a physical store, deal with salespeople, or arrange for transportation.
Many bed-in-a-box companies offer generous trial periods, often ranging from 100 to 365 nights. This allows you to sleep on the mattress in your own home and decide if it’s right for you. If you’re not satisfied, you can usually return it for a refund.
Mattresses in a box are often competitively priced compared to traditional mattresses. This is because they save on showroom and storage costs, and these savings are passed on to the consumer. Plus, you won’t have to worry about any high-pressure sales tactics.
How do I unbox a mattress?
Follow these five steps to unbox your mattress quickly and easily:
- Place the box containing the mattress on or near your bed frame or foundation. It’s safest to have someone help you when lifting the box.
- Open the top flaps of the box, then tip it over and pull the mattress out.
- Unroll the mattress gently on your bed frame or foundation, making sure it’s oriented correctly (head to head and foot to foot).
- Cut the plastic wrapping open using scissors or a utility knife, but be careful not to cut into the mattress.
- Allow the mattress to expand and take its shape once the wrapping is cut open. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on the mattress type and brand.
Always refer to the specific instructions provided by the mattress manufacturer, as some mattresses might need to be unboxed in certain ways.
How much does a mattress in a box cost?
The average cost of a queen-size mattress in a box is typically $799–$1,499 CAD. The range includes a variety of mattresses with different features, firmness levels, and materials.
Ultimately, the price you choose to pay for a mattress in a box will depend on your personal preferences and budget, as well as the specific features you’re looking for. It’s important to do your research, read reviews, and consider your sleep needs before making a decision.

Is it safe to buy a mattress online?
Absolutely! Buying a mattress online has become a secure and hassle-free experience, thanks to the measures put in place by the best mattress in a box retailers. In fact, it’s much better to buy a mattress online vs in-store.
When you’re choosing an online mattress brand, keep these factors in mind:
- Sleep Trial: Trustworthy mattress companies offer generous sleep trials, allowing you to test the mattress in your home for an extended period of time.
- Return Policy: The retailer should have clear and fair return policies in case the mattress doesn’t meet your expectations.
- Warranty: Reputable brands stand by the quality of their mattresses and provide long-term warranties that cover manufacturing defects.
- Customer Support: Easily accessible and responsive customer support is a good sign of a reliable online mattress retailer.
- Customer Reviews: Reviews can provide valuable insight into the comfort and performance of a mattress sold online.
What are the different types of mattresses?
Mattresses fall into many different categories. Each has different characteristics that are a good fit for a variety of sleep styles. Here are just a few types of mattresses:
- Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses like Logan & Cove combine innerspring layers with foam or latex for a perfect pairing of contour and support. They tend to have better edge support and lower temperatures than memory foam, but this comes with reduced motion isolation for a slightly less peaceful sleep. (Shopping for a hybrid? Check out our list of the best hybrid mattresses.)
- Cooling Gel Foam: Some sleepers find normal memory foam too hot, so cooling gel foam mattresses like Douglas can be a great alternative. This type of mattress combines memory foam with cooling gel to keep temperatures comfortable while you sleep.
- Innerspring: Innerspring mattresses support your weight with metal coils. This makes the mattress bouncy and provides good edge support, but you might find this type of mattress less comfortable if your body needs more contouring.
- Memory Foam: Memory foam mattresses like Octave “hug” your body to relieve pressure and keep your spine aligned. They usually have good motion isolation, which is good for couples. While memory foam is known for trapping heat, Octave is actually our pick for best cooling mattress with advanced features like a cooling nanofibre cover, copper-infused memory foam treated with PolarMAX® phase-change material, and multi-zone support foam with air channels.
- Latex: Natural or synthetic latex mattresses can relieve pressure in any sleep position. They have a reputation for comfortable temperatures and can last longer than other types of mattresses. However, latex mattresses can also be more expensive and may not be ideal for some people with latex allergies.
What should I look for when choosing a mattress?
When you’re shopping for a mattress, it’s important to consider more than just how comfortable it is. There are a whole range of factors to keep in mind.
- Budget: Set a budget for your new mattress and stick to it. You might even be able to make this budget go further by finding limited-time deals and promotions online.
- Construction: Figure out whether you’d like an innerspring, foam, or hybrid mattress. There are pros and cons for each construction style, and knowing what you want will help narrow down your options.
- Firmness: Choose a mattress with the right firmness level for your sleep style—that is, whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. For example, side sleepers often want a softer mattress, while back sleepers may prefer something firmer. (Did you know that a medium-firm feel is ideal for most sleep styles? Get our guide to the best medium-firm mattresses.)
- Motion Isolation: Pay close attention to motion isolation if you share your bed with a partner, kids, or pets. The higher the isolation score, the less you’ll notice movement from the other side of the bed.
- Edge Support: Are you in the habit of sitting or sleeping near the edge of the bed? Look for a mattress with good edge support so you feel supported in any position.
- Bounce: If you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, you might prefer a mattress with extra bounce. (Your inner child will enjoy it, too!)
- Contouring: Contouring materials like memory foam help support your body in all the right places. That said, too much “hug” can cause overheating and make it hard to move, so find the level of contouring that’s best for your body.
- Temperature: Speaking of overheating—if you’re a warm sleeper, look for a mattress that promotes airflow and reduces heat. Octave Vista is a great choice with its cooling nanofibre cover, copper-infused memory foam treated with phase-change material for temperature balance, and multi-zone support foam with air channels.
- Responsiveness: A responsive mattress allows you to change positions without feeling stuck. Often found in hybrid designs, a responsive mattress can help you enjoy certain activities in bed even more.
- Noise: Nobody likes a squeaky or crinkly mattress. Get a quiet night’s sleep with a mattress made from noise-quieting materials like foam or latex.
- Company Policies: Get details about the manufacturer’s sleep trial, return policy, and product warranty so you know what you’re getting into.
