Bouncy Innerspring With Quality Concerns

Spa Sensations is an Indonesian-made innerspring mattress from Zinus, a bed-in-a-box company based in South Korea. Walmart Canada sells Spa Sensations for $229 for a queen size.

While the mattress has good edge support and motion isolation—and the highest bounce rating of any mattress we've ever tested—Zinus doesn't offer a sleep trial for Canadian customers, and only offers a 10-year warranty. We also observed quality issues with the mattress we received.

If you're looking for a quality mattress at an affordable price point, you might want to consider a brand like Juno instead.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Zinus doesn’t ship directly from its website to Canadian customers. If you’re buying a Spa Sensations mattress, you’ll have to do it through one of Zinus’s authorized third-party retailers. As of publication, Spa Sensations by Zinus is only available via Walmart. Shipping takes 1–3 business days and is free to most locations in Canada for orders over $35.

Zinus also doesn’t offer a direct sleep trial for its mattresses to its Canadian customers, so your sleep trial will vary depending on the retailer you buy from. Walmart also doesn’t accept mattress returns for Marketplace items on behalf of Zinus. Returns are facilitated through Walmart’s website, but it’s up to you to deal with the manufacturer. Zinus’s refund policy for Marketplace items is unknown.

The brand offers a 10-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects only. The warranty is considered void if the mattress isn’t used with the correct foundation, or if it’s “altered, [its] outer cover and/or mattress tags are removed or if it is improperly used.”

In comparison, competing budget mattress brand Juno provides a 15-year warranty, as well as a 120-night sleep trial and the option to return the mattress for a full refund.

No

Spa Sensations by Zinus stands 8" tall and has 3 visible interior layers of foam and coils. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1: The top layer is 3/4" of conforming viscoelastic latex foam. This layer adds plushness to the mattress's top surface and conforms to your body while you're lying down.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 1" of high-density foam. This insulates your body from feeling the coil layer below.
  • Layer 3: The bottom layer is 6" of metal coils. This layer gives the mattress most of its bulk, and prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress while lying down.

The mattress cover is sewn with a jacquard pattern, contains foam filling, and accounts for the remaining 0.5″ of the mattress’s height. It’s made from 100% polyester, and it isn’t removable or machine washable. Any spills or stains should be spot-cleaned only.

7.0 /10

Firmness

In third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Spa Sensations by Zinus had a 2.5" deflection when laid on, resulting in a 7.0/10 firmness score.

This places it in the firm category, which is firmer than the description of the mattress purchased for this review. You’ll find this mattress supportive, but it may be uncomfortable if you sleep on your side, or if you have back pain or joint problems.

(If you're a side sleeper looking for a new bed on a budget, consider Juno with its firmness score of 6.0/10. This translates to a medium-firm feel that's ideal for all sleep styles.)

8.0 /10

Edge Support

In third-party engineer testing, Spa Sensations by Zinus had a 4.1" deflection from a seated position, contributing to its 8.0/10 edge support score. This is an excellent score and is because of the metal inner coils. You’ll be able to sit on the edge of this mattress with no issues, and you won’t need to worry about falling off the bed if you sleep closer to the edge.

7.1 /10

Motion Isolation

In third-party engineer testing, Spa Sensations by Zinus scored 7.1/10 for motion isolation. This is a good rating, which is surprising for an innerspring mattress with this much bounce.

In the video above, notice how the far edges of the mattress don't move much when the medicine ball drops, even though the water is splashing out of the glass. This shows how you'll feel your partner sitting down heavily on the mattress. But smaller movements—or movements that are far away—should be less noticeable.

10 /10

Bounce

In third-party testing, Spa Sensations by Zinus scored 10/10 for bounce—the highest score of any mattress we've ever tested. This mattress will definitely help you spring to your feet when you get up in the morning, but you might find it too bouncy to sleep comfortably.

(Looking for a mattress that won’t catapult you out of bed? With a bounce score of 2.5/10, Juno gives you a consistent sleep surface for a more restful sleep.)

Cooling Features

Spa Sensations by Zinus is marketed as a budget mattress rather than a cooling mattress. However, it does have a couple of minor features that might provide a small amount of cooling. This mattress gains points for its:

  1. Innerspring construction, which permits some airflow through the coils
  2. Top layer of conforming viscoelastic latex foam to allow for some breathability

Shopping on a budget shouldn't mean that you sleep hot. If you're looking for an affordable mattress with cooling features, check out Juno instead. Juno has a layer of cooling gel foam to reduce heat buildup and improve airflow. You can also upgrade to the optional cooling cover crafted from special cooling yarn for added comfort.

Company Background

Private

Zinus is a South Korea–based company founded in 1979 by Youn Jae Lee. According to the company’s website, it began as a tent manufacturer before expanding into mattresses. The company maintains an "D-" (unaccredited) rating on Better Business Bureau. At the time of writing, Zinus has a "Poor" rating on Trustpilot with 1.6/5 stars, based on 66 reviews. 79% of those ratings are 1 star.

Overall, there are a significant number of customer complaints about the company and its products. Complaints include poor customer service and the company not honouring its warranty and return policies. Customers have also complained about missing parts and notable manufacturing defects, including fiberglass strands fraying and leaking through the mattress cover.

Zinus is currently facing a proposed class-action lawsuit after a California customer’s four-year-old daughter experienced serious health issues related to the fiberglass in her Zinus mattress. This is just one of several thousand people in the United States who say they were affected by fiberglass in the mattress. If fiberglass is a health concern for you, another mattress option like Juno might be safer.

Should You Buy Spa Sensations by Zinus?

Spa Sensations has an affordable price, and it’s one of the bounciest mattresses we've ever seen. But its few features, lack of sleep trial, just-average warranty, and poor quality mean it doesn't offer enough value for the money. We recommend Juno instead.

At $499 for a queen size, Juno offers exceptional value for its price. It features a cooling gel layer, a 120-night sleep trial, and a 15-year warranty. Your purchase even comes with a free bedding bundle, saving you the cost of buying new sheets.

The company is also rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot, with 5,400+ five-star reviews from happy customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spa Sensations a good mattress?

Spa Sensations by Zinus has an accessible price and a lot of bounce. However, it doesn't come with a sleep trial or cooling features, and it has notable quality issues. We suggest Juno instead. Juno comes with a layer of cooling gel foam and an optional cooling cover. You'll also get a generous 120-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle—all for just $499 for a queen size.

How long does a Spa Sensations mattress take to expand?

According to Zinus’s company FAQ, its mattresses may take up to 72 hours to fully expand. However, they should be safe to sleep on the first night after being unboxed. Zinus’s FAQ also indicates that jumping, walking, and sleeping on its mattresses during this time helps with decompression.

What is the Spa Sensations mattress warranty?

Zinus offers a 10-year limited manufacturer's warranty. It covers defects in materials and workmanship only. This warranty is void if the mattress is not used with the correct foundation.

The warranty is also voided if the mattress is "altered, [its] outer cover and/or mattress tags are removed or if it is improperly used."

How do you return a Spa Sensations mattress?

The Spa Sensations mattress we purchased for this review is no longer available for purchase from the company’s website. If you buy the mattress through one of Zinus’s authorized third-party retailers (like Walmart), the retailer's return policy will apply.

How do you clean a Spa Sensations mattress?

Any spills or stains on your Spa Sensations mattress should be spot-cleaned only. The cover isn’t removable or machine-washable.

Can you flip a Spa Sensations mattress?

No, you shouldn’t flip a Spa Sensations mattress. Even though the mattress is a traditional innerspring design, it’s not designed to be flipped.

Can you roll a Spa Sensations mattress back up?

Zinus doesn’t say whether you can roll any of its mattresses back up after unboxing them. However, this can be difficult to do with any mattress that contains inner coils. Although the Spa Sensations mattress ships rolled and compressed in a box, we recommend not trying to roll the mattress back up once it has expanded.

What Spa Sensations mattress alternatives should I consider?

You should check out Juno. At $499 for a queen size, it comes with a longer 120-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty. You also get a free bedding bundle that includes a mattress protector, pillow(s), sheets, and pillow protector(s), giving you extra value with your purchase.

Which Is Better: Beautyrest or Logan & Cove?

Both Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence and Logan & Cove Frontier are both hybrid mattresses with advanced cooling features and above-average motion isolation. Beyond that, based on our testing criteria, Logan & Cove is the clear winner.

Only Logan & Cove Frontier comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and free shipping and returns with a full refund. At just $1,299 for a queen size, Logan & Cove provides comparable benefits for less.

In Canada, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is available exclusively at The Brick. This mattress has a 10-year limited warranty, has only a 90-night sleep trial, and offers similar features to Logan & Cove Frontier for a much higher price tag. At $3,649 for a queen size, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is one of the more expensive hybrid mattresses we have tested.

Mattress Breakdown

Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence and Logan & Cove Frontier are both hybrid mattresses with advanced cooling features and a Euro-top design. But while their construction is somewhat similar, these are two very different mattresses.

Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence, a mattress sold exclusively through The Brick, is made in the United States and has a cooling gel foam layer, phase-change material, and cooling fabrics, along with steel coils for body-contouring support. It also has above-average motion isolation. However, it is on the higher end in terms of prices for a hybrid mattress, has poor edge support, and comes with a shorter-than-industry-average sleep trial, which is also an exchange-only period. Further, Beautyrest has a “Poor” Trustpilot rating, and their parent company has a “F” (unaccredited) BBB rating.

In contrast, Logan & Cove Frontier features advanced cooling elements such as cooling gel foam, latex-like Elastex® foam, and a quilted top cover woven with cooling nanofibres. With a five-zone system, Frontier provides full-body support, motion isolation, and airflow, as well as very good motion isolation and edge support. Logan & Cove is made by GoodMorning.com, which is rated “A+” on BBB and “Excellent” on Trustpilot.

To help you choose between Logan & Cove vs Beautyrest, we’ve gathered all the information you need to accurately compare these two mattresses.

Note: As of May 2025, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is no longer available for purchase on The Brick’s website. The mattress may still be available through individual resellers and some of The Brick’s retail stores.

Feel

According to The Brick’s website, the Beautyrest Black mattress has a “plush” feel, likely placing it on the softer end of the firmness scale. Its cushioning comfort layer may appeal to lighter individuals and those who prefer deeper pressure relief and a more enveloping sleep surface.

In contrast, the Logan & Cove Frontier offers a medium-firm feel. It combines solid support with enough plushness to ease pressure points, making it a suitable choice for a wide range of sleepers.

Medium-firm mattresses are generally recommended for most sleep styles, thanks to their balanced blend of support and comfort.

READ MORE: What firmness level is right for you?

Edge Support

Good edge support is important if you like sitting up or lounging on the side of your bed, tend to sleep closer to the edge or need extra stability for getting in and out of bed—especially if you or your partner have mobility challenges.

Hybrid mattresses are known for good edge support, thanks to their supportive inner coils. However, the Beautyrest mattress scored very low for edge support, at just 1.3/10.

In comparison, Logan & Cove has very good edge support with a score of 7.3/10. With Logan & Cove, you can sit comfortably on the edge of the bed, and you’ll have no trouble getting up in the morning.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is important to enjoying a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by a restless partner, kids, or pets. Beautyrest Black scored an above-average score, while Logan & Cove Frontier received a slightly higher score. Beautyrest scored 6.8/10, while Logan & Cove scored 7.0/10. You should feel minimal movement from the other side of the bed with either of these two mattresses.

Bounce

Bounce is a matter of personal preference. It measures how quickly a mattress bounces back to its original shape after pressure is applied. Hybrid mattresses with coils tend to be more bouncy and have a high response to pressure since they’re easy to switch positions and move around on.

Both Beautyrest and Logan & Cove scored about average for a hybrid mattress, with both scoring 4.8/10 for bounce. With either mattress, you should be able to change positions easily without waking your partner.

Cooling Features

Hybrid mattresses are more breathable due to their coils, which promote airflow. Beautyrest Black has a number of cooling features, including a Tencel cover, gel-infused foams, diamond-infused foams, open-cell foams, and pocketed coils. With these features, Beautyrest Black earned a cooling feature score of 6.1/10.

Logan & Cove Frontier has a Euro-top cover with breathable hollow fiber fill and gel-infused foam, CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres, a layer of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, aeroduct micro coils, Elastex® foam (a breathable open-cell foam similar to latex), and pocketed coils. These features earned this mattress a slightly lower cooling feature score of 4.4/10.

Both mattresses have several advanced cooling features which can help you sleep more comfortably, especially if you are a hot sleeper.

Mattress Construction

Logan & Cove Frontier Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The first layer is 1″ of breathable hollow fibre fill and cooling gel-infused foam. It’s quilted directly under the Euro-top cover, providing a degree of plushness and directly dissipating your body heat when you’re lying down.
  • Layer 2: The second is 1” of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam that provides gentle cushioning and targeted relief for your shoulders, hips, and knees. It also helps control excess body heat for a cooler, more comfortable sleep.
  • Layer 3: This layer features 1” of aeroduct micro-coils to help keep temperatures down and provide extra body-contouring support. The coils are arranged to help air circulate across the entire mattress.
  • Layer 4: This 1.5” layer of Elastex® foam contours around your body, providing comfort for any sleeping position.
  • Layer 5: The support layer contains 9” of individually wrapped steel pocketed coils. The coils are strategically placed in a three-zone system across the mattress, giving you excellent contoured support.

Logan & Cove has a plush quilted cover infused with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. The breathable hollow fibre fill, gel-infused foam, and cooling nanofibres give the mattress surface a cool-to-the-touch feel. Because of the Euro-top design, the mattress cover isn’t removable and can only be spot cleaned.

Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top layer consists of 1” HI-LUX gel memory foam. This foam reduces pressure on your hips and shoulders, and the gel infusion is designed to help offset the heat-trapping properties of memory foam.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is another 1” of memory foam. It’s not clear whether this layer is infused with gel foam since The Brick doesn’t provide detailed descriptions for individual mattress layers.
  • Layer 3: This 3” foam layer could be made up of memory foam, based on the look and feel.
  • Layer 4: A second 3” layer of foam makes up the fourth layer of the mattress. It looks and feels similar to the layer above.
  • Layer 5: A 1” layer of grey foam forms the transition layer between the upper foam layers and the steel coils below. We believe this to be a layer of gel-based BlackLux foam, which is designed to be breathable and provide pressure-point relief.
  • Layer 6: This layer is made up of 8” triple-woven, triple-wrapped T3-LUX steel coils. The coils are individually pocketed to enhance motion isolation and provide contouring support.
  • Layer 7: The final layer is 0.5” of support foam. This provides some protection between the coil layer and the bottom cover of the mattress.

While Beautyrest promotes a layer of foam that’s infused with diamonds to promote cooling in this mattress, it’s not clear where this layer is located. Beautyrest’s mattress cover is made of Tencel, a breathable material that helps wick away moisture so you don’t wake up in a pool of sweat. The mattress cover isn’t removable and can only be spot cleaned. There is also a 0.5″ of filling in the top cover that contributes to the mattress’s plush feel.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Note: As of May 2025, Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence is no longer available for purchase on The Brick’s website. The mattress may still be available through individual resellers and some of The Brick’s retail stores. The following information is based on our experience at the time of purchase.

Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence, sold exclusively through The Brick, is delivered by The Brick’s fleet of delivery trucks. Shipping time depends on your location, and The Brick’s website does not indicate how long it will take for you to receive your mattress. Shipping costs are calculated based on the distance between your home and the store where you’re ordering the mattress from. The mattress is delivered fully expanded and wrapped in plastic.

Logan & Cove ships by ground using FedEx. Your mattress is sent directly to your door for free throughout most parts of Canada. It should reach you in 2–11 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. Shipping fees may apply for some remote locations. Your mattress is shipped in a cardboard box, protected by multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, Logan & Cove fully expands within minutes of unpacking. You can sleep on the mattress the same day it’s delivered.

READ MORE: How to unbox a mattress

Logan & Cove has a sleep trial of 365 nights. If the mattress doesn’t work for your sleep needs, you can return it for a full refund. Logan & Cove will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period. They will either donate your returned mattress to a local charity in your area, or recycle the mattress if donation isn’t possible.

With Beautyrest Black Signature Excellence, you have only a 90-day exchange period to test out the mattress. This is shorter than the industry-average sleep trial length of 100 nights. If you’re unsatisfied with your mattress and want to return or exchange it, The Brick will charge you to ship the mattress back to the store.

The Brick also doesn’t offer refunds—you can only get store credit to put toward a different mattress. You’ll need to pay the difference if you want to exchange Beautyrest for a more expensive mattress. You still won’t get a refund if you choose a less expensive mattress, either.

Logan & Cove comes with a 15-year warranty. In comparison, Beautyrest’s warranty is just 10 years. This is industry average, but still doesn’t measure up to Logan & Cove’s longer warranty.

Popular Polysleep Mattresses

Polysleep produces all-foam mattresses that are marketed as “value” or “premium” models according to their prices and features. While some have antimicrobial features, Polysleep mattresses generally have limited cooling technologies—something to watch out for if you’re a hot sleeper.

There’s very little information about Polysleep on consumer trust websites like Trustpilot and BBB, making it difficult to say what your purchasing experience would be like. In addition, Polysleep only offers an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty, with an $89.95 fee for returning your mattress.

While Polysleep is an affordable brand with a selection of foam mattresses to choose from, that affordability means that you might not get the features or long-term value you need. Competing mattresses like Douglas Original offer more. At just $799 for a queen size, Douglas has a longer sleep trial and warranty, more cooling features, and better-rated customer service (according to Trustpilot and BBB).

Deciding between linen bed sheets vs cotton can be challenging, especially if you don’t know the difference.

Linen sheets are durable and incredibly breathable, and their texture gets softer and softer with time. Cotton, on the other hand, is an old classic known for its cozy and familiar feel.

In this article, we’ll explore the key differences between linen sheets and cotton sheets so you can decide which option fits you best.

Breakdown: Linen vs. Cotton Sheets

What Are Linen Sheets?

Linen sheets are made from the stalks of flax, a flowering plant. Flax cultivation requires much less water than cotton, making it more sustainable. Linen has a reputation for durability, and linen sheets usually last a long time.

Linen fibres are longer and thicker than cotton fibres, so linen tends to have a rougher appearance and a faint ripple-like texture. This also makes linen more breathable than cotton or bamboo sheets.

This rough feeling tends to go away after linen sheets are first washed, and they get softer with every washing. Many manufacturers stonewash their linen sheets during production so they’re soft right out of the package.

Like cotton sheets, linen sheets may be woven into different weaves that affect how the fabric feels against your skin:

  • Plain-weave linen uses a simple one-thread-over, one-thread-under pattern, similar to percale weaves used in cotton sheets. Linen fabric with this weave has a noticeable “checkered” pattern.
  • Close-weave linen is often called sheeting linen because it’s most often used to make bed sheets. The tighter weave makes this linen type more durable and softer than other linen types. It also isn’t as rough before being washed for the first time.
  • Loose-weave linen is much more breathable and very absorbent. The trade-off, however, is that loose-weave linen is less durable. This makes loose-weave linen sheets less common than sheets woven from other linen types.
  • Damask linen is woven with intricate, ornate patterns that are usually reversible. This makes the fabric slightly more textured than other linen types. Sheets made using damask linen are often marketed as luxury items.

Shop Linen Sheets

What Are Cotton Sheets?

Cotton sheets are made from cotton plant fibres. Cotton requires much more water to grow than linen does, and it’s notably less durable. However, organic cotton is becoming more accessible as a green alternative.

Cotton sheets are one of the most common choices for bedding and can last a long time with proper care. They’re also easier to wash than sheets made from other fabrics, such as lyocell.

READ MORE: Lyocell vs cotton sheets: which is better?

There are many different kinds of cotton, such as Pima cotton, Egyptian cotton, and upland cotton. Cotton sheets also have a wide variety of weave types, which determines how they feel:

  • Percale-weave cotton sheets use a one-thread-over, one-thread-under pattern. This creates a breathable and moisture-wicking design suitable for warm sleepers. Percale sheets also have a crisp, snappy feel.
  • Sateen-weave cotton sheets use a one-thread-under, three-to-four-threads-over pattern that feels silky and has a subtle sheen. This type of sheet tends to retain more heat. You might also notice pilling in the fabric over time.
  • Twill cotton sheets look like denim, with parallel ribs in a diagonal pattern. This type of cotton bedsheet is very durable, though it lacks the softness of other options.
  • Jersey cotton sheets, similar to a favourite T-shirt, bring a stretchy and cozy feel to your sheets when you sleep.

Shop Cotton Sheets

Benefits of Linen Sheets

  • Durable and long-lasting thanks to thick fibres
  • Breathable and heat-dissipating to help you sleep cool

FAQ

How do you tell the difference between linen and cotton?

Cotton is smoother to the touch, and is relatively stretchy and flexible. Linen has a coarser, faintly rippled texture that becomes softer the more it’s washed.

What’s the difference between flax and linen?

Flax is a flowering plant used to make linen, where it is cultivated and woven into linen cloth. It has been used to make clothing for thousands of years in hot countries, valued for its ability to stay cool and fresh in warm weather.

Which provides better cooling, linen or cotton?

Linen is generally better at keeping you cool than cotton. Although linen fibres are thicker, linen fabrics have a looser weave. This makes them more breathable than their cotton counterparts, so they do more to keep you cool and dry while sleeping at night.

That said, cotton sheets can also have good air circulation, depending on the type of cotton used, the weave, and the thread count. Egyptian cotton sheets, like those made by Douglas, have long and thin fibres in a tight weave. This makes them exceptionally breathable and good at dissipating heat.

When it comes to cooling, thread count is also important, especially for cotton sheets. Higher thread count sheets can be less breathable, which inhibits cooling. In general, cotton sheets should have a thread count of 400. This ensures a good balance between softness and breathability.

How do you wash linen sheets?

To wash linen sheets, use cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Avoid hot water, which can cause linen to shrink once it starts to dry. For best results, wash your sheets by themselves. Hang your linen sheets to dry, or tumble dry on low heat.

How do you wash cotton sheets?

Most of the time, washing cotton sheets is as simple as throwing them in your washing machine and running them on a regular cycle. They can be washed at high temperatures, and either hung to dry or tumble-dried on normal heat.

Specific types of cotton sheets might have different care instructions, so always read the laundry tag to be sure.

Are linen sheets worth the money?

Linen sheets may be worth the investment if you value breathable, cooling bedding with a unique touch and feel. Authentic linen sheets (made of 100% flax) offer excellent temperature regulation, becoming softer with each wash. They provide long-term durability and sustainability, making them cost-effective over time. Ideal for hot sleepers or those in warm climates, linen sheets add an exotic aura to your bedroom and are a great choice for those prioritizing quality, comfort, and environmental friendliness.

How often should you wash your sheets?

You should wash your sheets once a week, no matter what material your sheets are made from. Not only does washing your sheets regularly help them last longer, but it also helps your entire bed last longer. It does a lot to help you sleep well and stay healthy, too.

You have a 100-night sleep trial to decide whether to keep Simba 2500. The company asks that you spend at least 30 days with the mattress before returning it. You’ll need to bring the mattress back to the store yourself, as Sleep Country doesn’t provide return pickup.

Simba 2500 Mattress Construction

Simba 2500 is a 12" hybrid mattress with 4 distinct interior layers. Three of these layers are foam, and one uses up to 2,500 micro-coils. All foam used is CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1: The top layer is 1" of graphite-infused foam. This layer contours around your body and helps to relieve pressure. The graphite infusion helps to dissipate heat, keeping your sleep cool.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 1" of micro-coils. These cone-shaped springs are individually pocketed and encased in a layer of edge support foam along the mattress's sidewalls.
  • Layer 3: The third layer is 3.5" of polyurethane foam that incorporates Simba's "Edge Lift" technology. This layer is explained as creating more edge support, but Simba doesn’t provide details to explain how it does this.
  • Layer 4: The bottom layer is 6.5" of support foam. This dense foam layer gives the mattress most of its bulk and keeps you from sinking in too deep, and has perforations to increase airflow.

Simba’s mattress cover is made of polyester, polypropylene, and a small amount of elastane. It has handles on the side to make moving the mattress easier. Although it has a zipper, the cover is not meant to be removed and is not machine-washable. Simba recommends that you spot-clean this mattress only.

When you’re on the hunt for the perfect bed, one question often pops up: do you really need a box spring? Is it some outdated piece of furniture you need just for older mattresses, or something worth paying more to use with newer mattresses?

In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about box springs so that you can make an informed decision about setting up your bed.

What Is a Box Spring?

A box spring is a type of mattress foundation. It’s a wood or metal frame covered in fabric, usually with metal coils, metal grids, or springs inside.

When choosing a box spring, it’s important to match it with the appropriate mattress size. Box springs come in various sizes to fit different mattresses, including twin, full, queen, and king.

Box springs are largely outdated, as most mattresses are designed to not require a box spring. So, depending on the mattress you choose, you may not even need a box spring.

READ MORE: How to choose a mattress

Using a box spring with a modern mattress (like a bed-in-a-box mattress) that doesn’t need one could void your warranty and negatively affect its support.

On the other hand, if a company recommends using a box spring with their mattress or bed frame, you should follow their instructions. Failing to set up your mattress or bed frame according to the manufacturer’s guidelines can void your warranty, too.

What Is a Box Spring For?

A box spring supports your mattress and lifts it to a comfortable height, improving airflow and regulating temperature.

It also creates a barrier between your mattress and your bed frame (or floor). This protects your mattress from the wear and tear caused by your body’s movements, which can help extend its lifespan, especially if your bed frame doesn’t have slats.

If you’re thinking about getting a new bed set, consider whether a box spring is necessary for the type of mattress and type of bed frame you want to buy. Many modern mattresses are designed to work without a box spring—but a firm foundation is a good idea for any bed.

A box spring should be replaced every ten years to ensure your bed stays comfortable and supportive.

READ MORE: How long should a mattress last?

Graphic image of a box spring

Do I Need a Box Spring?

You need a box spring if:

  • You have a bed frame that requires a box spring, like a traditional metal frame
  • Your bed frame doesn’t use slats, or has slats that are spaced too far apart to adequately support a mattress on its own
  • You have an older mattress (like an innerspring mattress) that’s designed to be used with a box spring
  • You have a mattress that requires a box spring as part of your mattress warranty
  • You want more support for your mattress (provided it’s compatible with a box spring)
  • You want to raise the height of your mattress so it’s easier to get in and out of bed
  • You want to add a layer between your mattress and your base to protect the underside of the mattress against mold and mildew growth
  • You want more airflow for a cooler night’s sleep

Infographic showing the benefits of a box spring

Don’t Use a Box Spring If:

  • You have a newer mattress that’s designed to be used without a box spring
  • You prefer a lower bed height, or have a bed frame that’s already at a comfortable height
  • You have an adjustable bed
  • You have a bed foundation that isn’t compatible with a box spring

What’s the Difference Between a Box Spring, a Platform, and a Foundation?

Box Spring

A box spring is a wooden or metal frame containing springs or a metal grid covered in fabric. It promotes airflow, mattress protection, and mattress longevity by absorbing shock and movement.

Foundation

A foundation is a rectangular box, similar to a box spring. It’s built on a fabric-wrapped wood or metal frame, with either wooden slats or a solid wooden top. Unlike a box spring, a foundation doesn’t use coils and doesn’t absorb pressure from your body’s movements the same way.

Foundations are commonly used with foam mattresses to reduce sagging. This is a less common problem with hybrid mattresses.

Platform

A platform bed is a frame featuring a built-in slatted base or a solid surface, making it both a bed frame and a foundation. The less space between the slats, the more support a platform bed has.

Platform bed frames are shorter than other bed foundations, which can make it difficult for you to get in and out of bed. Some people choose to use box springs with platform beds for that reason.

Adjustable Base

If you want an elevated sleep experience, consider a bed with an adjustable base. An adjustable base allows you to choose your sleeping position in a way that no other mattress foundation offers.

An adjustable base offers both comfort and flexibility by allowing you to raise the head or foot of the bed to your desired position, whether you’re sleeping, reading, or watching TV.

Elevating your upper body can reduce snoring and alleviate symptoms of acid reflux, while elevating your legs can improve circulation and relieve pressure on your lower back.

Adjustable beds are also ideal if you have chronic pain or mobility issues, as this type of frame makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

Choosing the right foundation for your mattress is crucial for a comfortable and restful night’s sleep. Many factors determine whether or not you need a box spring, including the type of mattress or bed frame you have, your budget, and your personal sleep preferences.

No matter which option you choose, making an informed decision about your mattress foundation will ensure you enjoy the best sleep experience possible.

Mattress Performance Results

Firmness

According to third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), Kingsdown has a firmness score of 6.4/10, categorizing it as a medium-firm mattress. Logan & Cove earned 6.9/10, which is a touch firmer, but also falls into the medium-firm category. Medium-firm mattresses are ideal for all sleep styles because they provide a good balance of comfort and support. You should find either mattress provides a comfortable level of firmness.

READ MORE: What mattress firmness is best for you?

Edge Support

Hybrid mattresses generally have better edge support than foam mattresses, thanks to their metal coils. While Kingsdown scored well with a 7.0/10, Logan & Cove performed even better with 7.5/10. You can sit on the edge or sleep farther away from the middle of the mattress without sinking much into the sidewalls.

Motion Isolation

A comfortable sleep is an uninterrupted sleep, especially when you (or your partner) change sleep positions at night. Kingsdown only has a motion isolation score of 5.3/10, which means you may experience disturbance in your sleep when someone else is moving around.

In comparison, Logan & Cove has a significantly higher motion isolation score of 7.5/10. You’re less likely to be disturbed when your partner changes sleep positions, or when your kids and pets jump into bed with you.

Bounce

Hybrid mattresses tend to provide more bounce than foam mattresses. Kingsdown has an above-average bounce score of 6.1/10. This can be good if you need a highly responsive sleep surface, but with the mattress’s lower motion isolation score, you may notice your partner’s movements even more.

In comparison, Logan & Cove’s similar bounce score of 5.8/10 is just above average for a hybrid mattress, but paired with its higher motion isolation score, provides a better combination of responsiveness and stillness.

Cooling Features

Hybrid mattresses are more breathable due to their coils, which promote airflow. Kingsdown Silent Partner Fairhaven has a few cooling features in addition to its coils. Its cooling technologies include moisture-wicking silk fibres in the top cover, layers of gel-infused foam, and pocketed coils, which earned Kingsdown a score of 2.8/10.

If you prefer a mattress with more cooling features, consider Logan & Cove Choice. This mattress has features such as a cooling top cover with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres, a layer of breathable hollow fiber fill and cooling gel, ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, Elastex® foam (a breathable open-cell foam similar to latex), and pocketed coils. All these features earned this mattress a cooling feature score of 4.4/10.

Mattress Construction

Both Logan & Cove Choice and Kingsdown Silent Partner Fairhaven are hybrid mattresses with a cooling cover, cooling gel foam, and pocketed coils. However, they are constructed very differently.

Logan & Cove Choice Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The first layer is 1" of breathable hollow fibre fill and cooling gel-infused foam. It's quilted directly under the tight-top cover, providing a degree of plushness and directly dissipating your body heat when you're lying down.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 1″ of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam. This foam layer provides excellent comfort and pressure-point relief, conforming to your body’s shape while also wicking away heat and moisture.
  • Layer 3: The third layer is 1″ of Elastex® foam. This layer contours around your body, providing latex-like responsiveness and pressure relief, but without any of the allergy-causing chemicals in many natural latex mattresses.
  • Layer 4: The support layer is 9″ of individually pocketed coils. Made of double-tempered steel, these coils are divided into 3 body-supporting zones to give contouring support for your back and hips. This layer is also encased with 4″-thick edge support foam along the sidewalls to give you more support when sitting on your bed, or lying farther away from the middle.

Kingsdown Silent Partner Fairhaven Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The first layer is 0.75” of cooling gel foam. Combined with the next foam layer, this provides 1.25" of cooling foam.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 0.5” of the same (or very similar) cooling gel foam as the top layer.
  • Layer 3: This layer is 2” of BluTek gel visco memory foam. Sleep Country explains this layer helps relieve pressure points.
  • Layer 4: The transition layer is an additional 1” of BlueTek gel visco memory foam.
  • Layer 5: The top layer of more flexible coils is designed to be responsive to your body's changing movements. Coils measure 3.25” tall in the outer two rows along the edge of the mattress, and are 5.25” in the inner section.
  • Layer 6: The bottom coil layer uses stiffer, less flexible coils to support the mattress's overall structure. These coils measure 6.25” in the outer rows and 4.25” in the inner section.

As hybrids, Logan & Cove and Kingsdown both use foam in combination with metal coils to provide comfort and support. Both also feature quilted covers and incorporate cooling technology into their construction. Neither of these mattresses has a removable or machine-washable cover, meaning they should be spot-cleaned only in the case of any spills or stains.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Note: Kingsdown Silent Partner Fairhaven is no longer available for purchase through Sleep Country. You may still be able to find it for sale through individual retailers. The information below applies to our reviewed Kingsdown mattress at the time of purchase.

Kingsdown and Logan & Cove both ship by ground using FedEx. Shipping is free for both mattresses, and both will be delivered directly to your doorstep. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations.

The biggest difference between how these mattresses are shipped is their packaging. Logan & Cove Choice ships in an easy-to-move cardboard box rolled and protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. Once unrolled, the mattress expands to its full height in a matter of minutes.

READ MORE: How to unbox a mattress

Kingsdown, however, was not designed to be rolled and stored in a box. It will be delivered fully expanded. Keep this in mind before you order, and ensure the mattress’s size will fit into your doorframes when it arrives.

Logan & Cove has a longer warranty and return policy than Kingsdown. Logan & Cove’s 365-night sleep trial gives you a full year to get to know your new bed. Sleep Country, on the other hand, only offers the industry-standard 100-night trial.

Sleep Country has a strict no-refunds policy. If you want to return your Kingsdown mattress during the trial period, you’ll have to bring the mattress back to the store yourself. You only get credit for an in-store exchange, minus a $65 exchange fee, and will have to pay the difference in cost if you choose a pricier mattress. Logan & Cove, however, offers full refunds with free pickup service at any point during its sleep trial.

Logan & Cove comes with a 15-year warranty, giving you mattress coverage for longer. In comparison, Sleep Country offers only a 10-year warranty.

About Euro-Top Mattresses

Unlike regular pillow-top mattresses, which have a cushioning layer sewn directly on top, Euro-top mattresses have a comfort layer beneath the mattress cover for a more sleek and flush appearance.

Although the name is inspired by the look of European mattresses, the two types are very different. European mattresses are known to be quite firm and focus more on structure than comfort. In contrast, Euro-top mattresses prioritize comfort and support, and offer more cushioning than traditional European beds.

READ MORE: What are the different types of mattresses?

The top cushioning layer is typically crafted with a foam or fibre-fill material designed to contour your body. This gives an additional comfort layer on top of the mattress, which is usually an innerspring or hybrid construction.

Because the comfort layer is sewn into the mattress and under the top cover, Euro-tops are level with the rest of the mattress layers. This gives Euro-tops a flatter top and evenly squared sides that will fit snugly with your mattress protector or sheets.

Euro-top mattresses tend to be firmer because the mattress cover pulls the comfort layer down more tightly than a traditional pillow-top. The flush edges and integrated comfort layer also provide strong edge support if you sleep near or sit on the edges of your bed.

Firmer mattresses are more supportive in general, making them a good choice for stomach and back sleepers. Side sleepers will enjoy the plushness of the comfort layer while still receiving support where they need it, though they might prefer the additional softness of a pillow-top.

Euro-Top Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Luxurious and soft feel while still being supportive
  • Relieves pressure points
  • Strong edge support
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Sleek look
  • Your sheets fit more snugly

Cons

  • Not as plush as a pillow-top mattress
  • Poorly made options won’t contour as well to your body

About Pillow-Top Mattresses

A pillow-top mattress features a soft, cushioning comfort layer sewn directly onto the top cover. This construction creates a small gap between the mattress top and the comfort layer, resulting in a rounded, plush surface.

This often results in pillow-top mattresses being taller than regular mattresses, which means you’ll need to use deeply pocketed fitted sheets. The gap between the top of the mattress and the comfort layer could also mean that your sheets might not fit as snugly.

Pillow-tops are ideal if you’re seeking extra plushness. The comfort layer creates a “hugging” feeling as it contours around your body. The softer filler materials are also more comfortable if you are a side sleeper or have a lighter body weight.

Pillow-Top Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Softer and more plush feel
  • Relieves pressure points
  • Good for more lightweight sleepers

Cons

  • Less durable than Euro-tops
  • Less edge support
  • Sheets and mattress protectors won’t fit as well
  • The added height could mean you need to purchase deeper pocketed fitted sheets

What’s the Difference Between Euro-Top and Pillow-Top Mattresses?

So, how do Euro-top vs pillow-top mattresses compare?

There are similarities and differences between Euro-tops and normal pillow-tops. Both offer more plush contouring and comfort than tight-top innerspring or hybrid mattresses. The most distinct difference between a Euro-top and a pillow-top is the look and feel of the mattress

  • Construction: A Euro-top’s comfort layer is sewn underneath the mattress cover and integrated into the mattress for flush edges and a firmer and more supportive feel. Pillow-tops, on the other hand, have their comfort layer sewn onto the top of a mattress cover, creating a more rounded look with a soft and plush feel.
  • Lifespan: Euro-tops can last longer, too. Because the comfort layer on a Euro-top is sewn directly into the mattress, it won’t wear out as easily, and the filling won’t shift around or become lumpy.
  • Edge Support: Euro-tops may also have better edge support. The comfort layer is pulled taut and firmer filler materials are used in construction, which makes it easier for you to sit or sleep on the edge of the bed. The plush and lifted nature of the pillow-top’s comfort layer makes for a squishier and less supportive edge.
  • Maintenance: When it comes to cleaning your mattress, you may find it easier to spot-clean a Euro-top since the surface is firmer. This makes the surface more stable and prevents the filler from moving around while you’re scrubbing the top.
  • Cost: Because of the additional comfort layer, both pillow- and Euro-top mattresses can be more expensive than tight-top innerspring or all-foam mattresses. However, brands like Logan & Cove are creating high-quality and luxurious Euro-top mattresses at affordable prices (starting at just $999).

Who Should Sleep On a Euro-Top Mattress?

A Euro-top mattress might be right for you if…

  • You’re looking for an extra layer of comfort. The best Euro-top mattresses offer comfort and plushness without compromising on body alignment and responsiveness. Logan & Cove Frontier, our top pick in 2025 for Euro-top mattresses, contains cooling gel nanofibres and foam in its comfort layer for a cool and comfortable sleep.
  • You’re looking for a firmer mattress. While pillow-tops are a good choice if you’re looking for a mattress you can sink into, Euro-tops provide a better balance between comfort and support. Logan & Cove Frontier, for example, is a medium-firm Euro-top mattress designed to cater to a wide variety of sleep styles.
  • You’re looking for a durable mattress whose comfort layer won’t flatten or wear out over time. The cushioning in Euro-top mattresses is sewn directly below the cover, so this type of mattress lasts a long time. Logan & Cove Frontier’s 15-year warranty also means the cover (and the rest of the mattress) will last for years to come.
  • You’re looking for a mattress with good edge support. Euro-top mattresses offer good edge support, thanks to their firmer filling materials and unified flush stitching. If you like to sleep close to the edge of your bed or sit on your bed a lot, then a Euro-top could be a good choice for you. Logan & Cove Frontier scored a 7.3/10 for edge support when tested by third-party engineers—a higher-than-average score that means you’ll be well supported on the edge of the bed.
  • You have a heavier body weight. If you weigh more than 230 lb, you may sink too deep into a pillow-top, leaving you feeling stuck in bed. A Euro-top is comfortable without being so soft that it completely envelops you. Logan & Cove Frontier can support up to 500 lb, or 250 lb on each side.

FAQ

Are Euro-top mattresses good?

Yes, Euro-top mattresses are a great choice for many sleepers. They’re plush but supportive, and they have a luxurious feel.

Our pick for the best Euro-top mattress in Canada is Logan & Cove Frontier. Frontier features luxury comfort without the premium price tag—just $1,299 for a queen size. It also comes with a free bedding bundle, a 365-night sleep trial, and a 15-year warranty, giving you even more value with your purchase.

Is a Euro-top mattress firm?

Euro-tops are designed to offer both softness and support, so they tend to be firmer than a traditional pillow-top. The comfort layer in a Euro-top mattress is integrated and sewn flush beneath the mattress cover, providing a more supportive and sturdy feel.

Can you flip a Euro-top mattress?

No, you can’t flip a Euro-top mattress because the comfort layer is only on one side. Instead of flipping your mattress, rotate it 180 degrees every few months. This will evenly distribute wear and tear, which will help your mattress last longer.

How long does a Euro-top mattress last?

Most mattresses have a lifespan of about 8–10 years with regular wear and tear. A Euro-top mattress may last longer than a traditional pillow-top mattress due to its integrated construction.

With proper care and maintenance, you can expect a Euro-top mattress like Frontier to stay sturdy and supportive for many years—especially with the mattress’s 15-year warranty.

READ MORE: How long should a mattress last?

Are Euro-top mattresses good for side sleepers?

Yes, Euro-tops work well for side sleepers. This is because they have extra cushioning that helps relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders. Lightweight side sleepers, however, may enjoy the extra plushness provided by a pillow-top mattress.

Do Euro-top mattresses sag?

With proper support and regular rotations—180 degrees every three months or so—your Euro-top mattress shouldn’t sag prematurely. Regular maintenance ensures even wear and tear, allowing the mattress to provide consistent support over a long period.

Is a Euro-top mattress good for back pain?

Many sleepers find that Euro-top mattresses help with their back pain. Euro-tops typically feel firmer compared to traditional pillow-tops, offering better support for back sleepers. The integrated comfort layer provides a balance of softness and support, helping to maintain spinal alignment and relieve ongoing pain symptoms.

Can you use a pillow topper or mattress pad with a Euro-top mattress?

You can, but it may not be the solution you’re looking for. Mattress toppers will conform to the shape of your current mattress. If your current Euro-top mattress is sagging or feels unsupportive, it may simply be time for a replacement.

You should also keep in mind that using a mattress topper can keep you from enjoying some of your mattress’s cooling and comfort features.

Which Is Better: Logan & Cove or DreamCloud?

DreamCloud and Logan & Cove are both well-known mattress brands, but Logan & Cove offers the best value for a similar price. Canadian mattress Logan & Cove Choice is designed with advanced cooling features and three-zoned ergonomic support for a comfortable, supportive, and luxurious sleep. Logan & Cove has a generous 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty. A queen mattress is priced at just $999, and it comes with a free bedding bundle for even more value.

In comparison, DreamCloud has limited features and benefits.  While it also offers a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, this mattress doesn’t have thicker-gauge steel coils in the middle to help support your hips and keep your spine aligned. DreamCloud lacks advanced cooling features to ensure nighttime comfort, but still costs $1,099 for a queen size. You also may not receive the product quality and customer service you expect, considering DreamCloud’s "Poor" rating on Trustpilot.

Mattress Performance Results

Firmness

Comparing the Logan and Cove mattress vs DreamCloud, DreamCloud is considered a medium to medium-firm mattress. DreamCloud also doesn’t have thicker-gauge steel coils in the middle section of the mattress, which would help support your hips and keep your spine aligned. This means you will sink partway into the mattress when you lie down and you could find it harder to change sleep positions.

Logan & Cove Choice is a medium-firm mattress with less “hug,” which will help you change sleep positions more easily. It also has three-zoned support, with thicker coils to support your hips, thinner coils for shoulders and knees, and reinforced coils around the mattress edge. This provides cushioning, spinal alignment, and targeted support. The mattress gently contours around your body with minimal sinking, for a comfortable and supportive sleep.

Edge Support

Hybrid mattresses are generally known for good edge support. However, in third-party engineer testing (commissioned by us), DreamCloud scores only average for edge support at 5.7/10. This is surprising because the mattress has thicker steel coils around the perimeter that should provide more support.

In comparison, Logan & Cove Choice earned a much higher edge support score of 7.5/10. You’ll be able to sit comfortably on the edge of the mattress without it dipping too far down, and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting out of bed.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation helps you enjoy a restful night’s sleep without being disturbed by movement from your partner, kids, or pets. Hybrid mattresses typically provide less motion isolation than foam mattresses due to the responsive inner coils.

DreamCloud earned a motion isolation score of 5.9/10, which is average for a hybrid. However, Logan & Cove scored much higher with a very good score of 7.5/10.

Bounce

While bounce is more of a preference, it can also be a good indication of how easily you can shift sleep positions and whether you might sink into or feel “stuck” in a mattress. Hybrid mattresses typically have lower bounce, but the DreamCloud mattress scored a below-average bounce rating of 3.9/10—a lower rating than comparable hybrid mattresses.

Logan & Cove Choice has a higher bounce rating at 5.8/10. But thanks to the mattress’s higher high motion isolation score, you’re less likely to be disturbed by a restless partner or pets. The responsive Elastex® transition layer and multi-zoned support foam will also help you shift sleep positions more easily.

Cooling Features

Hybrid mattresses are more breathable due to their coils, which promote airflow. While DreamCloud isn’t promoted as a cooling mattress, it has some cooling features, including gel-infused foams and pocketed coils. With these features, DreamCloud earned a cooling feature score of  1.8/10

If you prefer a mattress with more advanced cooling features, consider Logan & Cove Choice. This mattress has features such as a cooling top cover with gel-infused foam, CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres, a layer of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, Elastex® foam (a breathable open-cell foam similar to latex), and pocketed coils. All these features earned this mattress a cooling feature score of 4.4/10. These scores indicate you’re more likely to have a cooler and more comfortable sleep on a Logan & Cove Choice.

Mattress Construction

Both Logan & Cove Choice and DreamCloud are hybrid mattresses with foam and coil layers for comfort, transition, and support.

The DreamCloud mattress is 14” tall, latex-free, and hypoallergenic. It contains 5 layers: four foam layers and one pocket coil support layer. In comparison, Logan & Cove Choice is 12" tall, with a top layer of breathable hollow fibre fill and cooling gel, a layer of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam, an Elastex® foam transition layer, and a support layer made up of three zones of individually wrapped pocket coils.

Logan & Cove is completely transparent about its mattress construction, material composition, and 2.5 lb/ft³ foam density. Logan & Cove Choice has a plush quilted top cover with diamond tufting, infused with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres. Combined with the breathable hollow fibre fill and gel-infused foam in the mattress’s top layer, the cooling nanofibres give the mattress a cool-to-the-touch feeling.

DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress Layers

  • Layer 1: The top layer is 1.5” of plush polyurethane foam. This layer supports and cushions your body, and is stitched directly into the quilted top cover.
  • Layer 2: The second layer is 1” of cooling gel-infused memory foam. This layer contours to the shape of your body while you’re lying down and actively dissipates heat while you sleep.
  • Layer 3: The third layer is 2” of polyurethane foam and prevents you from feeling the layer of metal coils beneath. According to DreamCloud, this layer also promotes spinal alignment.
  • Layer 4: The fourth layer is 8.5” of individually pocketed stainless steel coils. Thicker-gauge coils are placed along the sidewalls to give the mattress more edge support.
  • Layer 5: The fifth layer is 1” of polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a base for the pocketed coil layer above, and insulates the coils from the mattress’s foundation.

DreamCloud’s breathable cashmere blend cover is made of 68% polyester, 31% rayon, and 1% cashmere. The cover can’t be removed, and you’ll void the warranty if you try. We weren’t able to find any information on the composition of the bottom and side cover composition, or on the density of DreamCloud’s foam layers.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

In comparing the Logan and Cove mattress vs DreamCloud, both mattresses ship by ground for free using FedEx. Additional fees may apply for some remote locations. You’ll want to do your homework on the total cost to deliver to your door with DreamCloud, since shipping costs seem to vary. DreamCloud doesn’t deliver to Nunavut.

Logan & Cove Choice ships from Ontario or Alberta and arrives at your doorstep in 2–11 business days, including dispatch and delivery time. We were unable to determine the location of DreamCloud’s Canadian distribution centres. However, DreamCloud has an exclusive Canadian retailer distribution agreement with Leon’s, which has retail stores and distribution centres across Canada. The company’s website states that different mattresses and sizes have different shipping times, with a range of 2-7 business days.

With both companies, your mattress is delivered directly to your door throughout most parts of Canada. Logan & Cove Choice is shipped in a cardboard box and protected by two layers of heavy-duty plastic. DreamCloud is rolled and shipped in heavy-duty plastic, minus the box. Logan & Cove Choice expands within minutes but may take up to 24 hours to fully expand and be sleep-ready, which is typical for a hybrid mattress. DreamCloud takes up to 72 hours to expand.

Both Logan & Cove Choice and DreamCloud come with a 365-night sleep trial, which is considerably longer than the industry average. Logan & Cove has a 15-year warranty, while DreamCloud advertises a lifetime warranty.

However, DreamCloud has numerous consumer complaints on independent review sites like the Better Business Bureau, Trustpilot, and Reddit for product quality and getting the company to honour its sleep trial refund. DreamCloud has also been fined by the FTC in the US for repeated false advertising. In comparison, Logan & Cove has over 4,500+ verified, five-star reviews, a Better Business Bureau rating of “A+”, and an “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot.

Both companies will pick up returns for free within the sleep trial period and issue a full refund. Logan & Cove donates gently used mattresses to local charities, while DreamCloud’s website says it will work with the customer to get the item donated or disposed of through local organizations within the customer’s community.

Choosing a mattress with the right firmness can transform your sleep quality. Depending on your sleep style and body type, you might need a soft mattress, firmer mattress, or something in between.

Not sure how to decode the mattress firmness scale or find your perfect fit? In this article, we’ll help you learn about different mattress firmness ratings so you can find the best option for you.

What is mattress firmness?

Mattress firmness reflects how soft or firm your mattress feels when you lie on it. Depending on your build and body weight, a mattress can feel more or less firm. Two people with different body types can experience different firmness and support levels on the same mattress.

What determines a mattress’s firmness is its construction—particularly the thickness of the comfort (top) layer, which influences how firm or soft the mattress feels. The support (bottom) layer typically determines the support level (more details later in this article).

Mattress firmness is measured on a standard scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being very soft and 10 being very firm. Mattress companies often mention the “firmness level” of their mattresses when promoting their products. They may or may not include exact scores, but will generally mention the “feel” of a mattress, which is helpful when buying a mattress online.

The type of mattress can also determine the level of firmness. For example, there are different firmness levels in foam vs spring mattresses. This is because foam provides a different feel compared to metal coils.

How do you determine mattress firmness?

At Mattress Reviews, our firmness testing measures “sinkage,” or how far your body sinks into the mattress. This gives us an objective method to compare various mattresses across different brands.

Independent third-party engineers (commissioned by us) test sinkage using a 5’5” 170-pound mannequin to simulate the weight distribution of the average human body. They place this mannequin in the middle of the mattress and measure how far it sinks. The deeper it sinks, the softer the mattress.

Different mattresses can have the same firmness rating but feel different due to variations in foam or coil thickness, so we score hybrid/innerspring mattresses separately from foam ones.

Here’s an example of a mattress testing photo featuring our mannequin. Average displacement for the mattress shown is 3.6″, which translates to a score of 6.0/10. Keep reading to find out what that means for the mattress’s feel.

What are the different mattress firmness levels?

Let’s dive into what soft, medium, and firm mattresses truly feel like.

Soft Mattresses

Soft mattresses usually have a firmness rating between 1 and 3 (out of 10) and are often described as “plush.” They tend to have a thicker comfort layer, which is usually made of memory foam.

Softer mattresses provide pressure relief for your shoulders and hips. Their high degree of sinkage creates a “hugging” sensation while you’re lying down.

A softer mattress is ideal for side sleepers weighing under 130 lb. However, if you have a heavier body or don’t have pressure points, you might find softer mattresses claustrophobic. Your hips could also dip below your shoulders when sleeping, which can lead to back pain.

In terms of durability, softer mattresses tend to use more plush materials that can break down faster. This causes the mattress to sag and can lead to a shorter lifespan.

Medium Mattresses

Medium mattresses usually have a firmness rating between 3 and 7 (out of 10). This is the widest firmness range, and it includes a narrower range of feels described as “medium-soft,” “medium,” and “medium-firm.”

This is the most popular choice of firmness for most sleep styles and body types.

Medium mattresses are moderately supportive but have less “hug” because you won’t sink into them as much. They provide a good balance of comfort and support, and are suitable for most types of sleepers. They tend to be best for sleepers who weigh 120–240 lb.

Medium mattresses tend to last longer than softer mattresses due to their sturdier construction and thinner comfort layers.

Firm Mattresses

Firm mattresses usually have a firmness rating between 7 and 10 (out of 10). They tend to have outstanding support and limited “hug,” which gives the mattress a solid feeling when you lie on top of it.

Firm mattresses are ideal for sleepers over 240 lb. Back and stomach sleepers also benefit from using a firm mattress since the limited sinking in the midsection helps keep their spine aligned.

However, if you are a side sleeper or weigh less than 230 lb, you may experience pressure in your shoulders and hips, meaning there’s a greater chance of achy joints in the morning.

Firm mattresses may last the longest thanks to their denser cores and thinner comfort layers, which translates to minimal sagging.

What do mattress firmness scores mean?

  1. Soft (2.9 and under): This firmness level is extra plush, and has a lot of sinkage. Mattresses with this firmness make you feel as though you are being completely enveloped in your bed, which may be uncomfortable since your body would get little to no support. Mattresses with this level of plushness are rare because the materials can cost more, and most shoppers don’t prefer this extreme level of softness.
  2.  Medium-soft (3.0–4.4): These mattresses have considerable sinkage and great pressure-point relief. Sleeping on them could be described as “sleeping on a cloud.” If you are under 130 lb and a side sleeper, you might enjoy a medium-soft mattress. However, a mattress with this level of firmness will provide minimal support, likely not last as long, and be more difficult to find than firmer mattresses.
  3. Medium (4.5–5.4): Mattresses with a medium level of firmness will feel soft and have some “hug,” but they also have more support. This firmness level is ideal for side sleepers who are under 130 lb, as they have plushness and pressure point relief but thinner comfort layers. This makes them more supportive and longer lasting.
  4. Medium-firm (5.5–6.9):  Medium-firm mattresses are the most common because they work for all sleep styles. These mattresses tend to have decent plushness and good pressure-point relief, but also provide good support. This makes medium-firm mattresses ideal for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers with a body weight of 130–230 lb.
  5. Firm (7.0–10): These mattresses have the least plushness, with little to no cushioning and minimal pressure-point relief. They feel very stable when you lie on them, and are ideal for those over 230 pounds and back/stomach sleepers. However, mattresses this firm can worsen (or cause) back, neck, or shoulder pain. Side sleepers should also avoid firm mattresses.

Here’s how these scores appear in our stamped testing report from third-party engineers:

What is the best mattress firmness?

The best mattress firmness is the one that works best for your needs. While medium-firm mattresses work well for all sleep styles, it’s important to choose a mattress that aligns with your preferred sleeping position.

Side Sleepers

For side sleepers, a mattress with a medium-soft to medium-firm feel is ideal. A mattress that’s too firm can cause spine misalignment and joint strain, while one that’s too soft may not provide enough support. Both can lead to back pain.

A medium level of firmness helps relieve pressure on your hips and shoulders, which are common trouble spots for side sleepers.

3-7 firmness score range on a scale, ideal for side sleepers

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, a medium to firm mattress is often the best choice. This firmness level ensures proper spinal alignment while still contouring around your body’s natural curves.

A firmer feel also prevents your spine from overarching and keeps your body from sinking too deeply into the mattress. This can help prevent or relieve lower back pain.

3-8 firmness score range on a scale, ideal for back sleepers

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers benefit most from a mattress with a medium-firm to firm feel. This level of firmness prevents the lower body from sinking excessively into the bed, which relieves pressure on the lower back and hips.

4.5-8 firmness score range on a scale, ideal for stomach sleepers

Heavy People

Heavier individuals typically benefit from a medium-firm to firm mattress that’s at least 10″ thick, providing ample foam layers for enhanced weight support. This firmness level prevents excessive sinking and allows pressure-point relief without bottoming out.

Some people with heavier bodies will find a mattress softer, so a mattress rated 7/10 for firmness might feel more like 6/10. That means a firmer mattress will provide the necessary support and comfort for heavier sleepers.

5.5-9 firmness score range on a scale, ideal for heavy sleepersOur Recommendation: Medium-Firm Is Best for Most People

Medium-firm mattresses are generally the best choice for most sleepers, striking a perfect balance between support and comfort. This firmness level maintains proper spinal alignment to reduce back pain while providing enough cushioning to relieve pressure points.

A medium-firm feel is versatile enough to accommodate back, side, and stomach sleepers, making it an ideal option for those who aren’t sure exactly what they need.

Does a firmer mattress provide better support?

Not always. It’s easy to assume that the firmer the mattress, the more support it provides. But firmness refers to how a mattress feels when you lie down on it, whether it’s hard or soft. Support, on the other hand, is how well the mattress keeps your spine aligned and maintains an even sleep surface for your body.

A mattress can provide the same firmness and different support to different people. A softer mattress could provide enough support for a lighter-weight person and not enough for a heavier person. A firmer mattress might be needed to support a stomach sleeper, but might be uncomfortable and unsupportive for a side sleeper.

When you’re considering which firmness level will provide enough support, think about your body type and preferred sleeping positions. Choose your firmness level based on how it affects the positioning and alignment of your spine, not necessarily how the mattress feels. This is crucial for reducing pain and enhancing sleep quality.

So what mattress firmness do you need?

A medium-firm mattress is generally the best choice for most sleepers due to its balanced combination of support and comfort. However, your individual needs may vary, and you could find other firmness levels more suitable. When shopping for a mattress, it’s essential to prioritize proper spinal alignment and personal comfort.
