Many retailers now deliver bed-in-a-box mattresses that are vacuum-sealed, rolled up, and placed in a box—right to your doorstep. Compared to a traditional fully expanded mattress, buying a bed-in-a-box makes it much easier to buy, receive, and transport a mattress into your home.

However, unpacking a bed-in-a-box mattress isn’t always intuitive, and there’s a right way to get a rolled-up mattress out of the box. Our step-by-step guide will show you exactly how to unbox a mattress.

1. Prepare the room and clear a path

When you receive your boxed mattress, you’ll likely need to move it from your doorstep to the room of your choice. To ensure a smooth process, keep the following points in mind:

Make sure there’s enough space in your chosen room to unbox the mattress. This may involve getting rid of your old mattress before you bring in the new one.
Ensure you have enough space between your front door and your bedroom to move the mattress box. You may need to temporarily move furniture and other items out of the way.

Mattress boxes tend to be 16″–20″ in length and width, and are commonly up to 46″ in height. However, these measurements can vary depending on the mattress brand. Some brands even deliver their mattresses in a bag rather than a box.

Different mattress types can also vary in weight based on their height and construction. Here is a rough guide to how much different-sized mattresses can weigh:

Twin: 35–100 lb (common weight: 35 lb)
Twin XL: 35–110 lb (common weight: 40 lb)
Full/Double: 40–110 lb (common weight: 50 lb)
Queen: 60–160 lb (common weight: 65 lb)
King: 80–180 lb (common weight: 80 lb)
California King: 80–180 lb (common weight: 80 lb)

Keep these factors in mind to make your moving and unboxing experience easier. With mattresses weighing more than 50 lb, we recommend asking a friend to help you move the mattress into your room and unbox it.

2. Bring the box into your home

Once your mattress is delivered, it will usually be placed at your doorstep, and you will need to bring it inside. Many bed-in-a-box mattresses are delivered directly to your home and left at your front door without requiring a signature. Keep this in mind when ordering your mattress to ensure it arrives safely.

Depending on where you purchased the mattress, the courier will most likely not bring the box inside your house.

Some companies may offer white-glove delivery service for an extra charge, in which case the delivery person will bring the mattress into a room of your choice. However, you will need to be home to receive the mattress.

3. Move the box into the bedroom

Now it’s time to move your mattress to the bedroom of your choice. Most mattress boxes have handle cutouts, making it easier to carry them upstairs. You can also tip the box onto its side and have one person carry each end.

Generally, moving a mattress is a two-person job. This can help you avoid injury and accidents, especially if you’re carrying a mattress box up a flight of stairs.

It may be possible to carry a twin or twin XL mattress by yourself, or move a mattress through a single-floor dwelling. However, it’s best to ask a friend for help. The extra set of hands will make moving and unboxing much easier.

4. Open the box

Now it’s time to open the box. Most boxes are sealed with heavy-duty packing tape, so you can use either a box cutter or a pair of scissors to open the top of the box.

We recommend scissors to reduce the risk of accidentally cutting your mattress, as this type of damage isn’t typically covered by mattress warranties. Always be careful when using sharp objects to avoid injuring yourself.

5. Remove the mattress from the box

Once you’ve opened the mattress box, we recommend using the tip-and-pull method to remove the mattress from the box. Follow these steps to do it safely:

From a standing position, tip the mattress box onto its side.
One person holds the unopened end of the box in place.
The other person firmly grasps the mattress and pulls it out of the box while anchoring their feet, slightly bending their knees, and engaging their core to avoid injury.

6. Place the mattress on your bed frame

Working with your partner, each of you should pick up the plastic-wrapped, rolled-up mattress at either end. Lift with your knees and place the mattress lengthwise on the bed frame. This will ensure you have enough space to unroll the mattress.

To make things even easier, look for a seam in the plastic wrap to see which way the plastic will unroll and place your mattress accordingly.

Before placing the mattress on your bed frame, double-check to make sure your new mattress is compatible with that type of bed frame. It’s possible you might need a box spring, foundation, wooden slats, or other accessory to ensure your mattress is properly supported. If you do, place the mattress on the necessary support system and proceed from there.

7. Remove the plastic wrapping

The mattress will likely be wrapped in at least two layers of plastic. The outer layer keeps the mattress rolled up, and the inner layer keeps the mattress vacuum sealed.

To remove the first layer, grip the edge of the plastic and unroll the mattress until it lies flat. If needed, flip it so it’s right side up—some manufacturers roll mattresses with the bottom side out. You can discard this first layer of plastic. At this point, your mattress should be lying flat on the bed frame, right side up, and wrapped in a second, thicker plastic layer.
To remove the second layer, use a pair of scissors to carefully cut open the second plastic layer in a straight line along the side of the mattress. Pull the plastic wrap away from the mattress when you’re cutting to avoid damaging it.

The mattress will start to expand at some point during the unwrapping process—normally when you cut the second layer, but sometimes when you finish unwrapping the first layer. You can either keep going or wait a few minutes to allow for full expansion.

Many mattress companies that offer sleep trials require you to cover the mattress with plastic wrap if you decide to return it. This protective second layer is intended for that purpose, so hang onto that layer in case you decide to return the mattress during the trial period.

8. Allow the mattress to expand

During the unwrapping process, you’ll notice the mattress starting to expand to its full size. Bed-in-a-box mattresses can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days to expand to their full height. For example, mattresses from GoodMorning.com usually take less than three minutes to fully expand and are sleep-ready the same day.

New mattresses often have an odour when you first unbox them. This is referred to as “off-gassing” and is typically not harmful, especially if a mattress uses CertiPUR-US® certified foams. Generally, this smell will dissipate within 24 hours.

To speed up the process, you can leave the bedroom door and windows open until the smell dissipates. It can also help to tip the mattress on its side for a short time to air out the top and bottom covers.

9. Throw away the empty box

Mattress boxes are usually recyclable. Just break it down and fold it as much as possible to fit in a recycling bag. Your local garbage collectors most likely won’t take a fully expanded box. (If you live in an apartment building with a recycling dumpster, you can use that instead.) The first layer of plastic wrap can be recycled, too.

Like we mentioned earlier, it’s good idea to keep the thicker inner layer of plastic, just in case you need to return the mattress for any reason. If you’d rather not keep the plastic around, you can always purchase a mattress bag from the hardware store if you need one.

10. Enjoy your new mattress

What is mattress off-gassing?

Mattress off-gassing is the initial chemical-like odour that’s released when vacuum-sealed mattresses are opened. This smell is typically due to the packaging process, which seals in the “new foam smell” released during foam manufacturing.

While this smell can be unpleasant, it typically isn’t harmful. It should dissipate within 24 hours, or as the mattress fully expands. To speed up the process, unbox the mattress in a well-ventilated room and open a window to allow airflow.

How long does it take to break into a new mattress?

It can take 30–90 days to fully break in a new mattress. This is why the industry-standard sleep trial length is 100 nights, with most manufacturers not allowing returns before at least 21 nights. The process can take even longer if you are sleeping on a type of mattress that your body isn’t used to.

How can I break into a new mattress faster?

Breaking in a new mattress can take some time, but there are a few ways to speed up the process and help it feel more comfortable sooner:

Let it fully expand and breathe for at least a few hours before you sleep on it.
Allow it to reach room temperature. Foam tends to stiffen in colder temperatures. To help make it feel softer during the break-in period, you can increase the temperature in your room by a few degrees (Celsius) to soften the foam layers in your mattress.
Place heavy items on it, like a good number of hardcover books. Move them around periodically to ensure even weight distribution across the mattress. The added weight will help to soften up the top layers in a mattress, which can typically feel stiffer the first few days you sleep on it.
Be patient. The best way to break in a mattress is to lay on it regularly for extended periods of time. If you don’t want to sleep on it right away, you can also choose to lounge on it when you’re reading, watching television, or working. That way, the top layers of the mattress have a chance to break in and help it become your ideal sleep surface.

Please note that we don’t recommend jumping on your mattress to break it in. This can damage both your bed frame and the internal layers of the mattress.

What is a sleep trial?

A sleep trial is a period of time during which you can test out a mattress at home, with the option to return it back to the retailer if the mattress isn’t the right fit. Exact return policies differ from company to company.

Some companies, like GoodMorning.com, offer sleep trials up to 365 nights long. They also offer full refunds when you return a mattress during the sleep trial.

Other types of sleep trials include exchange-only trials, where you can exchange your returned mattress for a different one in the company’s collection. Carefully review the sleep trial policy for your chosen mattress to avoid any surprises if you decide to return it.

Do coil mattresses bend or fold?

Certain mattresses with coils aren’t designed to be bent or folded for long periods of time. However, these mattresses are usually delivered fully expanded.

Bed-in-a-box hybrid and innerspring mattresses are a different story. They’re designed to be compressed and rolled up using special equipment in a factory setting. Many of these mattresses use pocket coils, which provide extra protection during the boxing process. Once the mattress has unboxed, it shouldn’t be bent, folded, or rolled up again.

How do I roll my mattress back up into the box?

Most bed-in-a-box products are compressed and vacuum-sealed using high pressure and industrial-grade machinery. Once the mattress expands, it can’t be compressed back to its original size without specialized equipment.

If you want to return your mattress, most companies will pick it up fully expanded. They won’t ask you to fit it back in the box. However, they may ask that you cover the expanded mattress with the plastic cover that it originally came with, or a mattress bag purchased from a hardware store.

Juno and Simmons are both all-foam mattresses. Juno contains 2 foam layers, whereas Simmons has 3 foam layers. However, they both stand 8” tall.

Layer 1: The comfort layer consists of 2” of full-body cooling gel foam, giving you contoured comfort and a cool night’s sleep. It has a foam density of 2.5 lb/ft³.
Layer 2: The support layer is 6” of total support foam, which makes the mattress feel firmer, provides extra edge support, and reduces motion transfer from the other side of the bed. Its foam density is 1.85 lb/ft³.

The Juno mattress cover is made with a blend of viscose and polyester. It has a zipper but is not machine washable, according to the manufacturer. Simmons’s cover is made of 72% polyester and 28% micro-polyamide, which is a blend of elastane and microfibres similar to polyester. The law label of the Simmons Gel Memory Foam mattress does not indicate whether or not the mattress cover is machine washable. To be safe, we recommend spot-cleaning it only.

Costco ships via UPS/FedEx. The mattress should arrive in 2–10 business days with Costco’s “quick ship” promotion. However, this offer may not be available for all customers. It depends on your location and the time you purchase this mattress. If you live in a remote area, the package may be held at a local store for pickup, which you’ll have to arrange yourself.

A Simmons mattress purchased through Costco doesn’t come with a sleep trial. You can instead expect Costco’s return policy, which will provide free return shipping in the case of online purchases. En général, les matelas en mousse sont composés de plusieurs couches de mousse mémoire, de mousse en gel, de mousse poly ou de mousse en latex.

La mousse poly offre normalement un soutien et une respirabilité hors pair. Sa fermeté peut varier grandement en fonction de sa fonction. De plus, elle coûte moins cher à produire que d’autres types de mousse, alors elle est souvent utilisée dans la fabrication de matelas abordables.

Quant à la mousse à cellules ouvertes (combinées à des propriétés rafraîchissantes avancées), elle favorise la circulation d’air.
La mousse en gel est un type de mousse mémoire qui se sert de gel pour éloigner la chaleur du corps pendant la nuit. Il peut s’agir d’une infusion ou d’une couche de gel par-dessus la mousse, selon le fabricant. Les ressorts Bonnell ont la forme d’un sablier et sont formés par un seul fil. Ils sont moins durables et soutenants et ils isolent moins bien les mouvements que d’autres types de ressorts.
Les ressorts ensachés sont enveloppés individuellement dans du tissu et agissent de manière indépendante. Ils sont donc très silencieux et épousent très bien les formes du corps.
Les microressorts ressemblent beaucoup aux ressorts ensachés, mais sont beaucoup plus petits. Ils permettent de mieux épouser les formes et d’améliorer la réactivité.
Les ressorts à décalage sont connectés comme les ressorts Bonnell, mais ne sont pas aussi ronds. Ils offrent une meilleure isolations de mouvement et plus de soutien.
Les ressorts continus sont des rangées de fils connectés. Ils sont durables, mais n’isolent pas beaucoup les mouvements. Ils sont moins confortables et sont assez bruyants.

Note: Beautyrest Imperial Granite was available in Canada through several third-party retailers like Sleep Country Canada, Walmart, and Best Buy, but according to a Sleep Country Canada agent, it has since been updated and renamed Beautyrest Zero Granite. You may still be able to find Imperial Granite through some mattress resellers. We purchased this mattress from Sleep Country, so the information in this section is specific to Sleep Country’s delivery, sleep trial, and return practices.

We purchased the Beautyrest Imperial Granite mattress from Sleep Country Canada for this review. Sleep Country provides free shipping for orders over $75 to most Canadian locations, with mattresses arriving at your door in 3–10 business days. For customers in Newfoundland and Labrador or the Canadian Territories, shipping takes 7–10 business days and costs $120. After your mattress arrives, you’ll have 100 nights to decide if it’s the right fit for you. This sleep trial length is standard for the mattress industry.

However, if you decide to return the mattress during the trial period, you won’t receive a refund. Instead, you’ll have to exchange the mattress for in-store credit after paying a $65 exchange fee. If you exchange for a less expensive model, any remaining balance must be spent on other Sleep Country products. You’ll need to pay the difference if you choose a more expensive mattress.

Sleep Country also doesn’t provide return pickup. This means you’ll need to transport the mattress back to the store yourself, even if you bought it online and there isn’t a Sleep Country location near you.

Beautyrest’s manufacturer’s warranty can vary based on the specific code on your mattress tag. This requires cross-referencing with their warranty documentation. Imperial Granite’s law label said it falls under warranty code A, which is an industry-standard 10-year warranty.

Beautyrest Imperial Granite is a hybrid mattress. It’s advertised as being a 12" mattress; however, the mattress we received stood only 11” tall. It has 5 layers. The foams used in this mattress are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Layer 1: This mattress's first layer is 0.5" of polyester batting, which provides a cushioned plush feel.
Layer 2: The second layer is 0.5" of latex foam, which is a breathable, open-cell material that should provide good pressure-point relief.
Layer 3: The next layer is 2” of high-density unspecified foam, which provides an overall firm feel and support to the mattress.
Layer 4: The fourth layer is 7.5" of zoned pocketed coils. The coils are individually pocketed to enhance motion isolation and provide contouring, zoned support.
Layer 5: The second layer is 0.5" of unspecified foam, which acts as a support layer under the coils.

According to the law label of this mattress, the top cover is composed of polyester. The cover’s TENCEL™ fibres are not listed on the law label. The cover is non-removable and not machine washable, so any stains or spills should be spot-cleaned only.

The firm option is priced lower at $700 for a queen size. This means you’re paying an extra $100 for a mattress that fits all sleep styles, but the only difference is an extra layer of foam.

Silk & Snow has under 2,000 customer reviews for the S&S Mattress on its website. The company is rated “A” on BBB, but has a customer review rating of just 2.4/5 stars. Flippable Mattress Costs More For Canadians

Layla Memory Foam is an all-foam mattress from the American company Layla Sleep. It features copper-infused cooling gel, a cooling cover, and a flippable design that lets you choose between “Soft” and “Firm” sleeping surfaces.

A queen-size Layla mattress costs $1,582 CAD (subject to USD exchange rates). However, Canadian customers end up paying even more due to a $250 USD non-refundable shipping fee. Layla's website also doesn’t state a currency, so it's not clear that you're paying USD until after you've bought the mattress.

Compared to competing foam mattresses like Douglas, Layla’s 120-night sleep trial is only slightly above industry standard. Amerisleep AS3 is an American-made mattress available in both foam and hybrid versions. (We purchased the foam version for this review.) It has above-average edge support, very good motion isolation, and some cooling technologies.

However, Amerisleep comes with few value-added features and only a 100-night sleep trial, which doesn't balance out the higher-than-average price tag of $2,500 CAD for a queen size. The mattress also takes 10–15 business days to arrive, and there are import fees for shipping to Canada.

In comparison, competitor foam mattress Douglas Original is much more affordably priced at just $799 for a queen size. With a 365-night sleep trial, a machine-washable cover, more cooling features, and a free bedding bundle, Douglas offers more value for your money.

Zephyr has a number of special features, including zoned support and a layer of antimicrobial foam. Still, we would expect to see more features at this price point. The mattress's 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty are only standard for the industry, and Polysleep only issues partial refunds if you decide to return your mattress.

Competing mattress Octave Horizon offers more features and value for a lower price. At $1,499 for a queen size, Horizon is meticulously crafted to give you a deeper, more restorative sleep experience. The mattress features advanced cooling technologies, five-zone ergonomic support, a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and hassle-free returns with a full refund.

As of February 2025, Polysleep Zephyr is no longer available through the company's website. It's only available for purchase in-store at individual third-party retailers. Price, sleep trial, and return policies may vary by supplier.

However, apart from the gel foam and vague technology, the mattress has no other cooling features. It also lacks a machine-washable cover, and its sleep trial is only standard for the industry. According to the customer questions section of the company’s product page, the mattress's fire sock contains fiberglass, which is a potential health hazard. And at $2,899 for a queen size, Puffy Lux is outside the budget of many Canadians.

In comparison, competing foam mattress Douglas Summit offers premium features for much less. The Casper is a memory foam mattress made by mattress company Casper. While this mattress used to be available for both Canadians and Americans, the model is now only sold through Casper Canada, which is owned by Sleep Country.

At the time we purchased our model for this review, this mattress was made in the United States, according to the law label. However, a Casper Canada support agent confirmed to us that The Casper is now made in Canada.

The Casper replaced the Casper Original mattress in 2023. It's priced as Casper's mid-range option, and retails at $1,499 for a queen size. It also comes with an industry-standard 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty.

Compared to competing brands like Douglas, The Casper comes with a shorter trial and warranty for a higher price tag. It also doesn’t offer the advanced cooling features you might expect to see for that price.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

IKEA ships mattresses across most of Canada via FedEx. Depending on your location, delivery fees start at $39 for contactless doorstep delivery or $59 for in-home delivery. The mattress for this review was picked up in-store. It was rolled and wrapped in plastic, but not packaged in a box, making it difficult to handle. It also wasn’t tightly rolled, resulting in a bulkier shape that was taller and wider than the boxed mattresses we often order.

This mattress did not fit in a mid-sized vehicle that should have accommodated its size, despite folding down the back seats. You will need a truck or van for store pickup. We also recommend bringing a blanket or tarp to protect the mattress, as both the plastic wrap and the underside of our mattress tore during transportation. This damage would not be covered by the product warranty.

ABROTTEN comes with a 90-night sleep trial, which is shorter than the industry-standard 100-night trial. IKEA’s policy only allows a one-time exchange or a store credit refund rather than cash back. If you exchange the mattress for a more expensive product, you’ll also need to cover the difference.

Returning the mattress doesn’t require re-rolling, but IKEA asks you to protect it during transit using a cover, plastic wrap, or an IKEA mattress bag (available at the delivery counter). Return pickup service may incur a fee and is done only if the mattress is clean and undamaged.

If you choose to keep ABROTTEN, it’s backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. While this is standard for the industry, competing brands like Juno offer a 15-year warranty, a longer 120-night sleep trial, free delivery to most locations in Canada, and the option of a full refund with free return pickup for flexibility and peace of mind.

IKEA ABROTTEN Mattress Construction

IKEA ABROTTEN is a foam mattress. It stands tall 8" tall, and has 3 layers. Foams used in this mattress are not CertiPUR-US® certified.

Layer 1: The comfort layer is 1.25" of high-resilience polyurethane foam. This layer provides pressure relief, without having too much “hug”, and prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
Layer 2: The second (transition) layer is 1.25" of polyurethane foam, which provides additional pressure-point relief. IKEA calls this layer “soft and resilient.”
Layer 3: The support layer is 5.5” of convoluted polyurethane support foam. This layer gives the mattress its sturdy structure so that you don’t sink too far into the upper layers, and also helps make it more breathable.

The IKEA ABROTTEN mattress cover is made of a blend of polyester and polyethylene and is lined with polypropylene, a breathable fabric that IKEA calls “sportswear fibres.” This gives the cover a soft and stretchy feel. Underneath the removable and machine-washable mattress cover, there is also an inner cover made of recycled polyester.

Delivery, Sleep Trial & Returns

Sea Horse mattresses are available for purchase from their retail locations. At the time of review publication, the company has four locations in Canada: Richmond, BC; Vancouver, BC; Edmonton, AB; and Markham, ON. However, not all store locations are mentioned on the Sea Horse website. If you live in one of these cities and decide to make a purchase, Sea Horse will deliver the mattress to your home for free. The mattress we ordered was personally delivered by the owner of the Sea Horse store two days after we purchased it.

If there isn’t a Sea Horse store in your area, the company says they can likely ship a mattress to your address. While purchases can’t be made from the Sea Horse website, you may be able to place an order over the phone or via email and have a Sea Horse mattress shipped directly to you. Shipping and delivery fees may apply.

Your Sea Horse mattress will come wrapped in two protective layers. The inner layer is plastic, and the outer is lined and reinforced paper packaging. The corners of the mattress are also protected by cardboard encasements. This helps protect the shape and appearance of the mattress while in transit.

When you receive your Sea Horse mattress, you’ll be the only person who has ever touched the mattress, apart from the people who made it. This is a positive if you’re conscious of germs or contamination. That said, it means the mattress comes with no sleep trial. This connection isn’t clear but was the rationale given for the lack of sleep trial when we visited the Sea Horse store. This also means you will likely not be able to return your mattress after purchase.

The Sea Horse Everlasting mattress we purchased came with a 10-year warranty. The terms of this warranty were not made clear to us, and there is limited information available online. We recommend confirming warranty details with a store clerk before you buy a Sea Horse mattress.

If you want a sleep trial to ensure your mattress is the perfect fit for you, consider Douglas Summit. All Douglas mattresses come with a 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty. Sea Horse Mattress Construction

The Sea Horse Everlasting mattress stands 8” tall and has 3 layers. It’s flippable, so the comfort and support layers can be switched whenever you want. However, there was no law label on the mattress for us to examine what materials were used in the mattress layers and cover.

The layers listed below presume that the “top” layer is the Firm side of the mattress.

Layer 1: The first layer of this mattress is about 6.5” of high-density foam. This layer acts as the comfort layer if you’re sleeping on the Firm side, or the support layer if you’re sleeping on the Soft side. This layer is what gives this mattress its very firm feel with almost no “sink.”
Layer 2: The second layer of this mattress is about 1” of a softer foam. When used on the Soft side, this layer will allow side sleepers to experience some slight pressure-point relief and body contouring.
Layer 3: The final layer of this mattress is an additional 0.5” of foam, which is designed to be the comfort layer if you decide to sleep on the Soft side. This layer of foam is quilted into the mattress’s cover.

When you use this mattress on the Soft side, you’ll benefit from the cushioning of the 1.5-2” of softer foam layers. If you sleep on the Firm side, these layers won’t affect the mattress’s firm feel. There is also a final ⅛” layer of foam incorporated into the top cover of the Sea Horse Everlasting mattress. Because this layer is so thin, we don’t add it to our official layer count.

The mattress cover is not removable or machine-washable, so any spills or stains will need to be spot-cleaned. According to the Sea Horse website, the cover is designed to be mold-mite resistant.

The Sea Horse website also advises you to flip your mattress once a month. This may not be ideal if you prefer one side of the mattress over the other.
